HOW TO PREVENT A FLU?

First, individuals should be sure they are not members of a high-risk group that is more susceptible to getting severe flu symptoms. Check with your physician if you are unsure if you are a higher risk person. Home care is recommended by the CDC if a person is normally healthy with no underlying diseases or conditions (for example, lung disease, asthma, pregnant, or immunosuppressed).

Increasing liquid intake, warm compresses and warm showers, especially in the nasal area, can reduce the body aches and reduce nasal congestion. Nasal strips and humidifiers may help reduce congestion, especially while trying to sleep.

Some physicians recommend nasal irrigation with saline to further reduces congestion; some recommend nonprescription decongestants. Fever can be treated with over-the counter acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin and others) (read labels for safe dosage). Cough can be suppressed by cough drops and over-the-counter cough syrup. If an individual’s symptoms at home get worse, their doctor should be notified.

Much of the illness and death caused by flu can be prevented by annual influenza vaccination. Flu vaccine is specifically recommended for those who are at high risk for developing serious complications as a result of influenza infection. These high-risk groups for conventional flu include all people aged 65 years or older and people of any age with chronic diseases of the heart, diabetes; lung, or kidneys; immunosuppression; or severe forms of anemia.

However, with the novel H1N1 flu, the CDC has listed these groups listed below as being at high risk and should obtain the novel H1N1 vaccine as soon as it is available to them:

  • people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age;
  • pregnant women;
  • people between the ages of 6 months through 24 years of age and children 5-18 years of age who have chronic medical problems;
  • health-care and emergency-services personnel;
  • people from 25-64 years of age who are at higher risk for novel H1N1 because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.

Other groups for whom conventional flu vaccine is specifically recommended are residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities housing patients of any age with chronic medical conditions and children and teenagers who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy and who may therefore be at risk for developing Reye Syndrome after an influenza virus infection. Flu vaccine is also recommended for people who are in close or frequent contact with anyone in the high-risk groups defined above.

These people include health-care personnel and volunteers who work with high-risk patients and people who live in a household with a high-risk person. (read more about flu here.)

Simple Movements To Recover From An Injury, And How A Physical Therapist Can Help

?Keep elbows bent at 90 degrees, and raise hand toward stomach while holding a light weight (a soup can is a handy weight). Slowly return. Repeat ten times.

For low back pain, simple exercises involve moving the legs and hips to restore flexibility and strengthen the lower back muscles. Stretching and isometrics are effective to minimize pain and increase mobility.

?Lying on your back, flex the ankles backward and forward. Repeat ten times.
?Bend your knees while lying on your back and place your hands below your ribs. Make your abdominal muscles tighter and hold for a count of five. Repeat ten times.
?Stand so that both feet are holding your weight equally. Gently lift your heels up and down ten times.
?While lying on back and bending your legs, grasp one thigh below knee. Straighten the leg until you feel a slight pull behind the thigh. Hold for a count of twenty. Repeat on both legs five times.
?Lie on your back at the edge of a bed, holding your knees toward you. One at a time, lower the leg while the knee is bent until you feel a slight pull. Hold for a count of twenty, repeat five times on each side.

If the knee is affected, exercises will focus on the hamstring, and muscles of the calf.

?Holding onto a chair for balance, grasp one ankle from behind and pull toward your back. Hold for a count of twenty.
?Sit tall with both legs extended in front. With your palms on the floor beside you, slide your palms toward your feet. Hold for a count of thirty.
?Stand with your back, hands and hips against a wall. Move your feet about two feet away from the wall. Slowly slide down until you are almost in a sitting position, hold for a count of five or ten, and then slowly slide up.
?Hold on to two chairs, one on each side. Raise one leg in front, putting your weight on the other leg. Lower yourself slowly, putting your weight on the heel of the supporting leg. Hold for a count of three to five, and then raise yourself straight.

Timely filing miss? Try to bill the patient

Here’s a situation that you might encounter: You just missed the timely filing deadline. As a result, a payer denied your claim. But this situation came to the fore because the patient didn’t give you her insurance information until after the timely filing deadline had crossed.

You don’t have too much of an option when your payer denies claim because you missed a timely filing deadline. But when the patient failed to provide her insurance to you in the allotted timeframe, you don’t have to write off those charges. As an alternative, you should try to pass the onus of paying the bill to the patient.

If you can prove to the payer that the patient was not successful in procuring her insurance information in the right time, you may be able to convince the payer to allow you to make the payment the patient’s responsibility.

Documentation proof: If you use an electronic system, you can easily keep track of when patients call in and make changes to their insurance as well as when you get copies of new insurance cards. This documentation will certainly keep track of when the patient gave you her insurance information.

As a proof, send a letter to your payer and include a printout from your system that shows the insurance information and when the patient gave it to your office. Ask the payer to rescind its denial based on timely filing and instead deny the claim as the patient’s responsibility because she failed to provide insurance information on time.

Remember that timely filing denials from payers are not always correct. You should pull your electronic confirmation reports and see if you have proof that the claim was in fact submitted on time.

Types of skin cancer:  

* Basal cell carcinoma
* Squamous cell carcinoma
* Melanoma
* Mycosis fungoides
* Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma
* Kaposi’s sarcoma

Basal cell carcinoma – is the most common type of skin cancer. It typically appears as a small raised bump that has a pearly appearance. It is most commonly seen on areas of the skin that have received excessive sun exposure. These cancers may spread to the skin around the cancer but rarely spread to other parts of the body.

Squamous cell carcinoma – is also seen on the areas of the body that have been exposed to excessive sun (nose, lower lip, hands, and forehead). Often this cancer appears as a firm red bump or ulceration of the skin that does not heal. Squamous cell carcinomas can spread to lymph nodes in the area.

Melanoma – is a skin cancer that arises from the melanocytes in the skin. These cancers typically arise as pigmented (colored) lesions in the skin with an irregular shape, irregular border, and multiple colors. It is the most harmful of all the skin cancers, because it can spread to other sites in the body. Fortunately, most melanomas have a very high cure rate when identified and treated early.
