Use of Percussor’s in the Medical Field

November 19th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

The use of percussor’s in the medical field has allowed doctors to test reflexes and check for chest congestion safely and effectively without the use of invasive procedures.  Percussion, as a medical technique, was first discovered in 1754 by Leopold Auenbrugger.    He developed this technique by watching his father tap on a keg to check the fluid level.  He discovered that it could also be used on humans to check the congestion level of the heart and lungs as well as determine if reflexes were healthy.

The percussor and reflexes
The knee percussor looks like a little hammer with a rubber triangle for a head.  It’s used to test your reflexes and make sure that the nerves that control your muscles are healthy.  While you’re sitting up straight the doctor will tap the percussor on your knee with the rubber triangle to look for healthy reflexes.  If all is well the knee will kick straight out.

Percussors and treatment of pain
The percussor is also used to break up scar tissue and fascial adhesions (fascia is the thin layer of connective tissue that surrounds and supports the muscles and inner organs of the body).  With an excess of scar tissue or fascial restrictions it can be very painful to move certain body parts.  The percussor, when used in rapid succession, is able to break up the tension and relieve the patient of pain and restricted movement.

Pneumatic percussors and lung disorders
A pneumatic percussor from a medical laser equipment provider is designed to break up mucus clogging in the lungs.  A percussion device is strapped around the patient’s chest and the rapid succession of movements from the percussor will break up the clogging in the lungs.  When the patient begins to cough then the doctor knows that lung passages are beginning to clear.  It is also a very well known treatment for cystic fibrosis in children.  Along with nebulizers and air compressors a pneumatic percussor can unclog air passages as well as kill off bacteria that amass there.

How to Prevent Tension Headaches

November 19th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

Tension headaches cause a tightening pressure and varying degrees of pain in the base of the skull, scalp, and forehead. Tension headaches can also cause discomfort in the neck and shoulder areas. While this type of headache is not life threatening, it can interfere with your ability to concentrate during the day.

Tension headaches are triggered by a number of physical and emotional stresses that are present in peoples’ everyday lives. Some examples of this stress include being overworked, insomnia, family problems, finance management, inactivity, and poor diet.

While you won’t be able eliminate all of the anxiety-filled situations in your life, your capacity to manage stress has a profound affect on your ability to reduce or eliminate tension headaches from your life.

Exercise and Eat Right
When you care for your overall health, your body is better able to handle the things life dishes out. This is why eating right and getting at least one-hour of moderate physical activity each day is vital to managing the stress that causes tension headaches. Your diet should consist of plenty fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. Also, drink at least eight glasses for water daily.

Biking, running, walking, jogging, aerobics, hiking, swimming, and sports are all excellent forms of stress-relieving physical activity. Also, exercises that promote deep breathing and meditation techniques such as yoga can help relieve the stress that contributes to tension headaches.

Keep a Headache journal
Use a journal to write down the things that happen prior to the onset of tension headaches. This will help you pinpoint the things that trigger your headaches, so you can avoid them in the future.

Avoid Cigarette Smoke
Cigarettes are not only detrimental to your health, they can trigger painful headaches. So if you are a smoker who suffers from headaches, look into methods that can help you nix the habit. Also, avoid areas where cigarette smoke is prevalent, and don’t allow others to smoke around you.

Get Regular Massages
Getting a regular massage from a licensed massage therapist can reduce the amount of stress and anxiety that cause tension headaches. Pregnant women and people who have heath conditions such as cancer, osteoporosis, blood clots, and arthritis should consult a doctor before getting a massage.

Use Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is believed to have relaxation benefits that can prevent tension-related headaches. Essential oils such as lavender, sandalwood, peppermint, and basil are commonly used for their ability to soothe.

To keep headaches at bay, use an aromatherapy burner to fill the room with the soothing oil scents. Or add a few drops of essential oil to a warm bath. You can also massage the oil directly on the temple of your head.

Get Plenty of Rest
Lack of sleep makes you less able to manage the everyday stress that can cause headaches. Adults should aim to get at least eight hours of sleep each night. But be careful not to overdo the sleep, as too much of it can contribute to headaches.

In rare instances, headaches can be caused by serious health conditions such as aneurysm, tumors, or meningitis. So if your headaches are severe, chronic, or accompanied by vision and speech difficulty, contact a doctor.

Tips to Gradually Reduce Your Nicotine Intake

November 19th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

If you have had a knee jerk reaction in giving up on smoking with the knowledge that they you were getting undeniably addicted to their weakness, there is a very high probability of a most certain relapse – with a vengeance.

Here we talk about some tips and on how one can de-addict themselves from the clutches of this nicotine killer addiction that claims the highest mortality rate. For a smoker, getting to the cause of the addiction is the root to drawing up a plan to counter the addiction and ultimately withdraw from this addiction.

If you are gasping for breath after walking a few steps, coughing and yet you contain a desperate urge to puff away on a nicotine stick, you are a confirmed nicotine addict. Merely fielding ignorance to the problem is the first step in letting grow into a disease, uncontrollable by any miracle or medicine. If you are suffering from a severe sore throat and you are incessantly coughing that renders you sleepless and you swear in the morning that you would completely abstain from smoking, there is a very high possibility of you relapsing in due course again.

One should mentally acknowledge and admit the fact that they are truly addicted and accept their weakness for the nicotine. Acceptance is the first step to de-addiction. Before a smoker can actually admit to his weakness, there are number of contradictory thoughts that cross one’s mind. It could be that there are other smokers do not cough or contact sore throats as much. Well, your answer to that would be that not everybody get cancer, but those who have to get it, will. It better not be you.

Once the first step of admission is done, the road to de-addiction gets tougher. The unnecessary arguments of continuance Vs. discontinuance ought to be first banished from thoughts. Figure out the problem, not sustain it. All said and done, this is perhaps one of the most challenging things in the world, yet possible. One might add “easier said, than done”. Absolutely no doubt about that. It is far more easier to picture oneself smoke a Marlboro than to digest a cough syrup with an overdose of antibiotics.

On the road to recovery, your body reacts as it naturally should. There is a sense of deprivation. You body acclimatized to the nicotine feed morning, noon and night finds a sudden down surge in the chemical reactions it is normally accustomed to. For the first few days, you would find yourself in frayed tempers, edgy, always on a high note, annoyed at the slightest provocation. Fear not, these are only wearing away symptoms, the wearing away of the hold of nicotine in the body, it’s a normal body reaction to a shortcoming, in good measure.

Generally on quitting cigarettes, one’s appetite increases substantially. Vitamin E is medically proven to be a great anti oxidant. This in lay mans language means it will prevent blood cells from reducing the oxygen content in blood thereby keeping you alert and relaxed, even as you satiate your craving for cigarettes through a larger intake of food.
De-addiction is a matter of mind over matter, the matter being the nicotine substance. Where there is a will there are two ways, one way to stop smoking, the second to abstain forever from it. It’s a new beginning, a fresh lease on life.

Five Simple Ways to Building a Strong Immune System

November 19th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

Now that the weather is changing and the seasons have officially changed, it means it’s time for colds and the flu to go around. More and more people are going to get sick as you start to see more people around us coughing and sniffling. We’re also on high alert since the media is constantly trying to scare us with all the swine flu. As a Napa personal trainer I’ve found that now more than ever we should be protecting our bodies and building up our immune systems so they are super strong and can take on any foreign invader.

Unfortunately many of us have weakened immune systems, which have a lot to with how we are taking care of ourselves. We don’t always take into account our preexisting health when flu season comes around. Instead we’ll bypass eating healthy and exercising for quickly getting the flu shot and by that filling our bodies with harmful chemicals. But just by following some simple tips anyone can improve their immune system and drastically boost their recovery time if you should happen to get sick.

1. Sleep More – Sleep has been proven to help our bodies recover better than anything out there. All the supplements in the world can’t replace a good natural night’s sleep. Anybody who hasn’t gotten a good night’s sleep will tell you how bad they feel. Free radicals are roaming our bodies causing chaos and sleeping is a great way to naturally detox and recover the body. What the researchers say about getting eight hours of sleep is true, also be sure that you’re not going to bed too late. When you fall asleep at one in the morning and wake up at nine you’re getting the full eight hours of sleep but you’re bodies natural rhythms are thrown off. Instead try getting to bed by ten thirty at the latest.

2. No More Sweet Stuff – What I’m talking about here is sugar and other artificial sweeteners such as Splenda which cause much chaos in the body and effectively weaken the immune system and also cause weight gain. Researchers have discovered that those who consumed sugar developed a weakened immune system for about eight to twelve hours after. They also found those who did not eat the sugar destroyed fourteen times more bacteria in their bodies.

3. Hydrate Yourself – Drinking enough water isn’t as easy as it sounds. In fact consuming at least half your body weight in fluid ounces daily can be a challenge for many. Since our bodies are mostly made of water it is imperative to constantly replenish one of our main resources. Just falling down to one or two percent dehydration can cause a downgrade in performance. So next time you’re feeling thirsty make sure you drink that water. Try staying away from smoothies and fruit juices and just stick with good old natural cool water.

4. Get The Stress Out – Stress is one of those things that can’t always be avoided because we all have crazy busy lives. Constantly stressing out our bodies can be taxing on our organs and hormones. If any of you have heard of cortisol than you know its powerful effects on the body from weight gain, to blood sugar imbalances, to adrenal fatigue. Just because you are stressed that doesn’t always mean it’s a bad thing. Being busy and having a lot of things going on can easily leave you stressed out. It’s always a good idea to take that you time and get some much needed rest now and then.

5. Break A Sweat Every Day – Exercising is our body’s natural way of strengthening ourselves. By breaking a sweat through exercise you know you’re pushing your body outside of its comfort zone. This doesn’t mean you have to confide yourself to a gym every day but even going for a brisk walk or jogging with your dog can be great for you. Exercising is great for your immune system but also will help you lose weight and feel great.
