Light treatment is miles ahead

December 4th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

Cells in the skin and the eyes have been found to absorb light of different wavelengths. Substances such as the chemicals within the skin absorb the energy from light sources and can be used to produce desirable results within the human body by varying the type and intensity of the light energy. Photodynamic therapy comes in many formats and uses many principles. Laser and intense light of limited wavelengths is used to remove acne bacteria, fade scars and fight many other skin afflictions.

The use of photodynamic therapy for acne is nothing new. In ancient times, Egyptians found that sunlight was the cause of cure for many skin diseases, and that I helped clear the skin of boils and small scars from pimples. Modern science has since broken down white sunlight into its many-colored spectrum. It has been found that blue light, red light and dawn-simulation are the most effective types of light when it comes to any kind of therapy, whether for acne or SAD (seasonal affective disorder) depression.

Treating acne with blue light

Blue light therapy is the most commonly used and treatment for most types of acne, especially acne vulgaris, which is the most common form of acne. Clinical trials have shown that light of a wavelength of between 405nm and 425 nm (the visible spectrum of light which is the color blue, and which is a component of natural white light). This light reacts with the chemical Porphyrin in the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. The energy absorbed in-turn destroys the bacteria itself, helping reduce lesions and scarring. This treatment is an FDA approved procedure and requires no painful topical applications or expensive medicines. In some cases a photosensitizing agent is used on the affected skin surface so that light rays are more readily absorbed by the skin.
The treatment may be carried on for as long as it is required (this depends upon the intensity of the problem), however, sessions are usually limited to two or three a week and can vary from between 20 minutes to an hour. It involves clinical or home administration of intense light from a blue light source (special LED lamps are available for this purpose. Clinics use large powerful lamps which can be used for multiple types of treatment while smaller portable lamps can be used to treat acne at home).

Some severe cases of acne are also treated with a combination of blue and red light therapy. The red light kills bacteria and prevents the re-emergence of acne lesions.

Benefits of blue light in therapy

It contains no UV light, making it safe for the skin
It has no harmful or lasting side effects
It requires no expensive medication although it can be used in addition to medical treatment

The ralaxation music philosphy

December 4th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

Relaxation music

The purpose of each relaxation music should be the creation of relaxation, concentration, optimistic mood and inspiration. That kind of music, called also new age music, is being employed in several treatments like anxiety management and massage or in many activities that need relaxed state like for example yoga. What the good relaxation music should contain.
The bulk of that type of music is rubbish and is available in the shops in special cheap bins. Why this happens? The music that undsfinishes up in such cheap bins is being recorded for the mass, solely to sell it. Hence that music isn’t going to put you into relaxed state, even if you think it does, you only imagine that you are relaxed. How often did you attempt to go to sleep after listening such cheap music and had difficulty to do that? How frequently the music you have listened to happened to be aggravating and useless? It is often because as I debated earlier not for putting you into a chilled mental state but to sell the million copies and earn the cash. It is analogous to the food products you purchase in the market. The one that are far more dear only contain natural elements. Same is with the good relaxation music. If this is inexpensive, it implies that it wont aid relaxation or can even do more damage than products. Typically the relaxation music is compatible with the 40 min or 1 hour length care. It is insisted that good relaxation music should put you into an alpha mental state. Alpha state is the state when you’re relaxed but aware. Many AHA or EUREKA moments occurred when you were in that state.
Try a search for the relaxation music that put you into alpha state, so called alpha music, as well as the one that have many years research.
If you’re a consultant, especially music specialist, you know about the importance of selecting the right music for your care.

Acid Reflux Disease

December 4th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

Acid Reflux or Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is not a disease rather it is a condition. Over stuffing and under eating, excess use of spicy foods, regular drinking of alcohol and smoking accompanied with no exercise are considered as primary causes for acid reflux.

As you may know, acid reflux currently affects people all over the world. Even though there are so many people out there that suffer from this problem, there are even more people that do not know the symptoms of acid reflux. When studying its symptoms, you will find that the symptoms in adults are totally different than the symptoms in infants and children.

Acid reflux heartburn is a serious health problem that affects more than 50 million people. Left untreated acid reflux heartburn may lead to a more serious condition such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and in some case cancer. For most people heartburn is an infrequent occurrence that comes from eating or drinking the wrong things. These intermittent acid reflux suffers can with a simple change in life style stop the symptoms of heartburn.

One should include vegetables like baked potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, green beans and peas. Also there are animal products that are very good for acid reflux disease. Ground beef, extra lean steak, broil chicken breast, skinless egg whites, egg substitute, fish etc are also considered to be good in acid reflux disease relief.

Among the grains pretzels, rice – either brown or white, graham crackers, rice cakes, corn bread, cereal, bran or oatmeal, and multigrain breads are considered to be friendly for acid reflux sufferers.

The most common acid reflux cause is triggered from the physical inability of the lower oesophageal sphincter to prevent the stomach acid from travelling up the oesophagus. Unfortunately because this is a physical abnormality, most medications cannot address the root cause. Thus, the only solution is surgery to strengthen the sphincter, thus enabling it to open and close properly.

When looking for alternative medicine and acid reflux relief, you may find references to herbal and botanicals and some people find that these are effective. Herbal remedies for acid reflux may include chamomile, meadowsweet, slippery elm, cancer bush, fennel, catnip, angelica root, gentian root, ginger root or other botanicals.

Slippery elm was used historically by native peoples to treat stomach upset, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn and other digestive complaints. Fennel and gingerroot were also common “folk remedies” for the relief of indigestion. Modern herbalists have found that a combination of several of the herbs that had been used for indigestion could be effective for acid reflux relief.

Another alternative medicine and acid reflux treatment plan may include a weight loss program. Obese and overweight people are more likely to suffer from acid reflux than are those who are at their ideal weight.

Herbal remedies for acid reflux include chamomile, meadowsweet, slippery elm, cancer bush, fennel, catnip, angelica root, gentian root, ginger root and other botanicals, including aloe. Slippery elm was used historically by native peoples to treat stomach upset, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn and other digestive complaints.

Eating Healthy While Saving Money

December 4th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

Everyone wants to be healthy. Nobody likes getting sick or feeling like they’re out of shape. However, many people seem to deny themselves one of the easiest ways to live well- the healthy diet. Reasons vary from personal taste to lack of available options, but one reason that seems to come up more than it should is the cost.

In many cases, healthy foods can be rather pricey compared to their more processed alternatives. Today, when everyone wants to watch their budget, cost cutting is the name of the game and our diets frequently suffer as a result. However, there are a number of ways to save money and still eat reasonably healthy foods, rather than sacrificing one for the other.

What is healthy eating?

In the last twenty years dieticians have gone from the Four Food Groups to two separate incarnations of the food pyramid. Specific proportions may vary, but some rules of thumb for healthy eating still apply.

Adults should consume a minimum number of calories per day to meet the body’s energy needs, while exercising enough to keep their weight stable. People need a certain number of vitamins and minerals, plus plenty of water and supplemental nutrients like fiber to help the body function properly.

The general theme of healthy eating is one of balance. Certain fats and LDL cholesterol are good for the body, while trans fats should be avoided. Organic foods are definitely a healthy choice, as they lack the chemical content of pesticide-treated foods, allowing consumers better control of what goes into their bodies.

However, no one list can say what is healthy for ‘everyone,’ because each person has different requirements. Advising people to eat organic, whole-wheat toast for fiber and healthy carbohydrates is great, until you realize that some people’s bodies can’t process the gluten in wheat.

Also, some people may indulge in certain less wholesome foods that don’t automatically ruin an otherwise healthy diet, when considered against the whole picture. After all, if you’re eating a fruit and vegetable heavy diet, with protein from easily digested sources like eggs and soy, having the occasional slice of white bread is not going to sabotage your diet.

The trick is to look for your specific nutritional needs, your personal tastes and preferences, and to then balance your diet around them.

OK, but what about that expensive part?

Choosing organic over heavily processed foods is healthier, but it also can be pricier, making the decision a bit difficult. Today we have a great variety of tools at our disposal, new and old, to keep the prices down. Fresh produce is often less expensive that pre-packaged foods. For example, a banana often costs less than a candy bar and is a much healthier choice.

Cash in on coupons and promotions.

Generally your local market will send out ads detailing all the deals they’re planning to offer over the next week, as well as a variety of in-store coupons. With organic foodstuffs seeing greater demand every year, stores are beginning to include these goods in their promotions.

There are a number of websites that offer weekly tips and updates on the shopping deals available in a particular area, so do a little research, clip some coupons, and look for deals. Many stores are beginning to offer online-only promotions, with coupons or vouchers printed from their websites.

Tap into your local farming community.

Join a local producers’ newsgroup, and shop around for deals. If your local supermarket is selling organic zucchini at fifty cents a pound, but a friend at the farmer’s market is supplying it for thirty, you know where to go. Network with people and keep in touch. A few minutes spent on the news board each day can save you hundreds in the long run.

Plant your own garden.

Maximize your outdoor space to plant anything from peas and peppers to lettuce and tomatoes. Even if you only have enough room for a few herbs that you grow indoors, that can add up to savings.

Any effort to save money requires a little time and thought. If you want to eat healthy without draining your wallet, take a half hour each week to do the research and prepare your strategy. Approach the effort as a challenge, rather than an obstacle and you’ll be on your way to healthy eating that won’t break the bank.

Humidification And Cpap – Is It Useful?

December 4th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

Everyone realizes that as the heat is turned up in the house to keep warm, the natural moisture in the air is decreased. This, in turn, reduces the amount of moisture flowing through your CPAP machine. With the flow from a CPAP machine already an irritant for one reason or another, the issue of a lower moisture level just aggravates the situation. This lack of moisture causes nasal passages to dry and may induce bleeding, swelling, sneezing and congestion. This lack of moisture creates a fertile ground for infections. Therefore, humidification is a critical part of CPAP therapy and the only way to reduce the dry irritation. In fact, humidification, especially heated, increased patients satisfaction, comfort and, therefore, compliance.

Cold Passover Humidification

There are two categories of humidification – warm and cold. Cold or “passover” humidification was the first type of humidification therapy for CPAP. Cold pass over is a water chamber that allows air from the CPAP to “pass over” the water before entering the CPAP tube thereby creating humidified air. Although this old style set up is effective for CPAP users with low pressure settings and a warm climate, it is not optimal. One problem is that the amount of moisture is static which might be too little or too much depending on the circumstances. Additionally, as the water temperature in the pass over falls, it could become too cold to tolerate throughout a sleep cycle. Given the difficulties with pass over humidification, CPAP patients have gravitated to the new and more advanced heated, integrated CPAP systems.

Heated Humidification

Heated humidification has become the most popular type of humidification for CPAP patients. Based on several industry studies, satisfaction, comfort and compliance jump measurably with the use of heated humidification. To meet the needs of CPAP patients, the major manufacturer’s including Resmed, Respironics and Fisher & Paykel have all introduced integrated heated humidification to their CPAP systems. The integrated heated CPAP systems have become popular because of their convenience, size and satisfaction with the results. In fact, the use of heated humidification tends to reduce or eliminate most of the disadvantages of CPAP use including dry mouth and throat and nasal congestion. The resulting outcome is a more effective treatment and a refreshed feeling on awakening. Although the disadvantages of heated humidification include “rain out” or water in the tube and mask, it generally can be overcome by properly calibrating the machine and the room temperature to avoid this situation.

Integrated CPAP Machines

Resmed, Respironics and Fisher & Paykel have advanced the integrated humidified CPAP system with each one having positives and negatives associated with their machines. Resmed’s S8 series new H4i “delivers 30% more humidity than its previous model. It is easily integrated into the CPAP and still remains compact for traveling”. Fisher & Paykel’s Sleepstyle uses patented “Ambient Tracking Plus technology which utilizes an auto-adjusting heater plate to maximizes humidity delivered by compensating for changes in room temperature, and during mouth and mask leak. The level of humidity delivered is dependent on room temperature”. Respironics’ newest machine the PR One system “analyzes ambient temperature, changing environmental conditions, relative humidity, and therapy flow to deliver optimum humidity – and ultimate comfort – throughout the night while also dramatically reducing rainout. Dry Box technology isolates the humidfier’s water source from the inner workings of the device to protect against accidental spillage and water damage”.

No matter the choice of CPAP machine, the use of a heated humidifier has been proven to provide a more comfortable CPAP experience, higher satisfaction, less complications and, ultimately, higher compliance. This translates into a more refreshed awakening and higher quality of daily life.

Discover How To Treat Cat Bites And Scratches Without Risk Of Infection

December 4th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

I think I’m a rescue freak. I can’t bear to see an animal in need. I don’t care what animal it is, I’ll help them all. However, cats seem to have their own way of finding me. Once two stray cats turned up on my doorstep, the day after I had moved in.

I think they have good bush telegraph.

Or maybe I was a cat in a past life…

Catching abandoned animals can be tricky, though.

Some years ago, I adopted a very frightened young cat. Before she had properly settled in, she managed to escape from the house and luckily, ran up a nearby tree.

I HAD to retrieve her as otherwise she would run feral, not knowing where home was.

I knew I was in for a hard time. Happily the tree wasn’t very high and a short step ladder was sufficient to get myself to her level. Then the fun started. She kept backing herself further and further down a narrow branch, until she could go no further. By now, she was really frightened.

I made a grab for her.

She fought and bit and scratched, but I managed to hang on. Somehow we made it back to the house and she bolted to hide under a bed. Well, she was safe, if traumatised. I’ll deal with her later. How about me?

My arms and hands were covered in deep scratches and bite marks which were beginning to become sore and swell up.

I found my bottle of homoeopathic Ledum and started dosing myself. Within a couple of doses a few minutes apart, I could feel the pain ebbing away.

A few more doses and there was really only the marks left, the swelling having gone down. A few days later and they were gone too.

How I wished I had known of this remedy some years earlier when I was in a similar situation. Then, my hands and arms were swollen and very sore for over two weeks.

The most obvious problem in such a situation, apart from the pain and swelling, is the risk of infection. Because the remedy had worked quickly on the immediate symptoms (the pain and swelling), I knew it would prevent any infection, and it did.

Ledum is a great acute remedy for any puncture wound. This can be from a cat bite (or any other animal), a splinter, a shard of glass, a vaccination, a rusty nail, a poisonous spider or snake bite. They’re all puncture wounds. I routinely give parents and pet owners Ledum to take before and after they have their child or pet vaccinated. This helps with any swelling and limits the harm.

If Ledum is given quickly after a bite, it will prevent an abscess. Abscesses are common in cats who fight other cats, or in cats who hunt.

A quirky keynote of Ledum is that they are cold, but feel better for cold applications. Heat aggravates the situation. So if the area of the bite feels relief from cold applications (we’re not talking about the numbing effect of ice here), Ledum is the first remedy to use.

If the remedy doesn’t help the acute symptoms (pain and swelling), then infection could set in. If relief is obtained from the remedy, it will also stop infection, even tetanus. So it’s important to keep an eye on this.

The homeopathic remedy Ledum is available from homeopaths, homeopathic pharmacies, health shops and now even some chemists. It is in any homoeopathic first aid kit.
