Low Quality Food And Not Enough Muscle Exertion Bad For Health

Our muscles do a lot more than just allow us to move. We now understand how important they are to the health of our metabolism (our body’s engine) which converts the food we eat into energy for us to live and breathe.

Metabolic Syndrome is becoming increasingly common and it is happening at an ever younger age with children now in the firing line of more serious illness and disease like diabetes and heart disease. The cause – poor diet and insufficient muscular exertion.

We as a population are becoming fat and immobile with this damaging combination of the wrong type of food together with too much of it and a lack of muscular exertion.

As people become overweight further problems are developed from the extra wear and tear on the skeleton, spine and joints.

When this dangerous metabolic disorder is triggered it can go unnoticed for years often surfacing in mid life and can have fatal consequences. Inside the body the damage to blood vessels, organs and systems has occurred from high levels of blood sugar, high cholesterol and high blood pressure over a sustained period and cannot be reversed leading to killer diseases.

This situation of poor low quality processed foods and not enough muscle building activity is the main reason why 50 percent of the world’s population now has one chronic disease and many have multiple conditions and ailments. Many more feel dreadful, lack energy and are experiencing a lessened quality of life. It is of no surprise that children being born today have been predicted to have a 20-30 year lessened lifespan.

To turn this around a proper exercise program that contains mostly strength training exercise is needed and the diet controlled. Highly processed foods would need to be ditched in favor of ‘clean’ foods free of chemicals.

Exercising the muscles is very important and has a beneficial and lasting effect on metabolic activity in the muscle cell. The muscles are where the disease is located so improving their condition and health will help reverse the metabolic dysfunction that threatens health and wellness.

Strength training exercise has a very positive effect on our entire metabolic health. It reduces high levels of body fat, reduces blood pressure and improves your body’s ability to control blood glucose levels and improves insulin sensitivity. Proper exercise is not just about external appearance and look – it is important for our health.

The human body was made to be active – very active so you need to take it upon yourself to make sure you give your body what it needs to stay healthy. There is not enough muscle strengthening activity in our modern day lives anymore so we have to replace it with intentional exercise.

Gentamicin sulfate

HOW SUPPLIED

Injection: 40 mg/ml (adult), 10 mg/ml (pediatric)

I. V. infusion (premixed): 40 mg, 60 mg, 70 mg, 80 mg, 90 mg, 100 mg, 120 mg in normal saline solution

ACTION

Inhibits protein synthesis by binding directly to the 30S ribosomal subunit. Usually bactericidal.

INDICATIONS & DOSAGE

Serious infections due to sensitive strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Proteus, Klebsiella, Serratia, Entero­bacter, Citrobacter, or Staphylococcus­

Adults: 3 mg/kg daily in divided doses I.M. or I.V. infusion q 8 hours. For life threatening infections, patient may receive up to 5 mg/kg daily in three to four di­vided doses; dose should be reduced to 3 mg/kg daily as soon as clinically indicated.

Children: 2 to 2.5 mg/kg q 8 hours I.M. or by I. V. infusion.

Neonates over age 1 week or infants: 2.5 mg/kg q 8 hours I.M. or by I. V. infusion.

Neonates under age 1 week and pretenn infants: 2.5 mg/kg q 12 hours I.M. or by I.V. infusion.

Meningitis –

Adults: systemic therapy as above.

Children: systemic therapy as above.

Endocarditis prophylaxis for GI or GU procedure or surgery-

Adults: 1.5 mg/kg LM. or LV. 30 minutes before procedure or surgery. Maximum dose is 80 mg. Given with ampicillin (vancomycin in penicillinallergic patients).

Children: 2 mg/kg LM. or I.V. 30 minutes before procedure or surgery. Maxi­mum dose is 80 mg. Given with ampicillin (vancomycin in penicillin allergic patients).

After hemodialysis to maintain thera­peutic blood levels –

Adults: 1 to 1.7 mg/kg I.M. or by LV. inusion after each dialysis.

Children: 2 to 2.5 mg/kg LM. or by 1. V. infusion after each dialysis.

Dosage adjustment: For adult patients with impaired renal function, doses and frequency are determined by serum gentamicin levels and renal function.

ADVERSE REACTIONS

CNS: headache, lethargy, encephalopathy, confusion, dizziness, seizures, numb­ness, peripheral neuropathy, vertigo, ataxia, tingling.

CV: hypotension.

EENT: ototoxicity, blurred vision, tinnitus.

GI: vomiting, nausea.

GU: nephrotoxicity; possible elevation in BUN, nonprotein nitrogen, or serum cre­atinine levels; possible increase in urinary excretion of casts.

Hematologic: anemia, eosinophilia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis.

Hepatic: increased ALT, AST, bilirubin, LD.

Musculoskeletal: muscle twitching, myasthenia gravis-like syndrome.

Respiratory: apnea.

Skin: rash, urticaria, pruritus.

Other: fever, anaphylaxis; injection site pain.

INTERACTIONS

Drug-drug. Acyclovir, amphotericin B, cisplatin, methoxyflurane, vancomycin, other aminoglycosides: increased ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Use together cautiously.

Cephalosporins: increased nephrotoxicity. Use together cautiously. Dimenhydrinate: may mask symptoms of ototoxicity. Use with caution.

General anesthetics, neuromuscular blockers: may potentiate neuromuscular blockade. Monitor closely.

Indomethacin: may increase serum peak and trough levels of gentamicin. Serum gentamicin ]evels must be monitored closely.

I. V. loop diuretics (such as furosemide): increased ototoxicity. Use cautiously. Parenteral penicillins (such as ampicillin and ticarcillin): gentamicin inactivation in vitro. Don’t mix together.

EFFECTS ON DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

None reported.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to drug or other aminoglycosides

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

• Use cautiously in neonates, infants, elderly patients, and patients with impaired renal function or neuromuscular disorders.

• A specimen for culture and sensitivity tests is obtained before first dose is given.

• Patient’s hearing must be evaluated before and during therapy. Patient complaints of tinnitus, vertigo, or hearing loss are important.

• Patient’s weight and renal function studies must be reviewed before therapy begins.

• Alert: Preservative-free formulations of gentamicin are used when the intrathecal route is ordered.

• Blood for peak gentamicin level is obtained I hour after I.M. injection or 30 minutes after LV. infusion finishes; for trough levels, blood is drawn just before next dose. Blood must not be collected in a heparinized tube; heparin is incompatible with aminoglycosides.

• Peak blood levels over 10 mcg/ml and trough levels over 2 mcg/m] may be associated with higher incidence of toxicity.

• Urine output, specific gravity, urina]y­sis, BUN and creatinine levels, and crea­tinine clearance must be monitored.

• Hemodialysis for 8 hours removes up to 50% of drug from blood.

• Superinfection (continued fever and other signs and symptoms of new infection, especially of upper respiratory tract) may occur.

• Therapy usually continues for 7 to 10 days. If no response occurs in 3 to 5 days, therapy may be stopped and new specimens obtained for culture and sensitivity testing.

I. V. administration

• When giving by intermittent LV. infusion, the drug is diluted with 50 to 200 ml of Ds W or normal saline injection and infused over 30 minutes to 2 hours. After completing LV. infusion, the line is flushed with normal saline solution or Ds W.

Patient teathing

• Maintain adequate fluid intake and report adverse reactions promptly.

• Don’t perform hazardous activities if adverse CNS reactions occur.

We are constantly bombarded with gloom and doom news stories warning us that heart disease is the world’s number one killer followed closely by cancer then diabetes, but what is really the biggest threat to your health?

The answer to this is the gravest and most serious public health public of the 21st century is physical inactivity and the extreme risk it poses to the deterioration of health. Simply put, sitting on your butt all day instead of moving your body in the ways it is supposed to move can be deadly.

It seems strange that so much money and resources are spent on medical techniques, surgery, diagnostic equipment and drugs to try and save lives once they are threatened by disease and illness. Why are we are we still putting the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff? Shouldn’t we be stopping people from falling off the cliff in the first place?

Exercise is not merely important it is absolutely critical if one wants to stay healthy and live a long healthy life. Most people, however, do not realize this because of the time factor between the lack of muscle building and maintaining exercise and the resulting decline in functional ability and ill health is so great. This time factor can be many years before ones body begins to show the harm done by a lack of proper exercise.

If nothing is done to prevent it, we lose muscle tissue as we age at the rate of one half pound per year from the mid 20′s and this rate doubles after age 50. This causes a weakening of the human body and all of its structures, systems and processes.

Everything is downgraded – from the metabolism (the bodies engine), the efficiency of the heart and lungs, brain power, muscle and bone strength, energy levels, mental and emotional stability, how we look and feel, and the biggie – the immune system which exposes us to greater risk of disease.

Yet such a simple thing can be added to ones life to stop all of this happening. All adults need a proper exercise program that builds and maintains muscle strength. Forget long slow endurance types of activities like walking, jogging or cycling. These are not a proper exercise program that works the muscular system through its full ranges of movement under a load.

It has been well proven that these recreational activities do not meet the requirements of proper exercise that stops muscle and bone loss in adults as they get older.

Get yourself into your local gym and get a proper program set up by a fitness professional. You not only need to do the exercises properly you need to do them at the right level of intensity (degree of effort used) otherwise the program will be of little use.

Take it upon yourself to ensure that you will not be a victim of premature and preventable ‘lifestyle disease’ somewhere down the track. This will be determined by what you do and don’t do in the way of exercise and healthy eating every single day of your adult life. Up to 80 percent of these diseases are under your control so grab that advantage while you can.

Losing Weight Is Easy When You Know How

Many people when they become overweight find it is easier to fall back on excuses than to make the necessary changes in their lives that would enable them to lose the excess weight. Sometimes they convince themselves that they are perfectly happy with their size and weight but you can bet if someone offered them the chance to be slim with a click of the fingers they would probably take it.

One of the most used excuses from those struggling with their weight is that they have a slow metabolism. And they are right; the slowing of the metabolism (the body’s engine) is a real thing. Being overweight slows the metabolism. It also means fat is burnt less efficiently and excess fuel (calories) gets converted to fat for storage as it is not being burnt for energy. So a vicious cycle is in place making losing weight difficult.

The biggest factor in the slowing of the metabolism is the loss of muscle tissue at the rate of one half pound per year from not doing enough strength building and maintaining activity. Muscle tissue is highly active tissue so its loss means the metabolic load goes down and the metabolism slows burning less fuel to reflect that. Add to this cycle is the fact we tend to become less active as the years go by and you can see why the inches start to gather around the waistline.

If you are tempted to throw up yours arms in despair and give in to the extra weight and inches, think twice. There are things you can do to improve your metabolic efficiency.

Proper exercise is number one. And the meaning of proper exercise is activity that works your muscles through their full ranges of movement under a load, in other words a strength training program.

No other type of activity will give you a metabolic boost like working your muscles at the right level of intensity (degree of difficulty). Keep your long, slow, low intensity activity (walking, jogging or cycling) as part of your new active lifestyle on top of your proper exercise not instead of it. If you want to get your motor running properly again this is a critical requirement.

A couple of interval training sessions each week will also help. These are short bursts of intense activity alternated with slower recovery periods. An example would be 10-15 seconds of sprinting followed by 30-60 seconds of walking repeated 10-12 times. This would give your metabolism a boost and have you burning more calories every minute of the day and night.

Add some small meals every 2-3 hours throughout the day with at least 20 grams of protein in each one and you have the perfect weight loss program. Try and ditch as much processed food as possible and eat more natural, whole (like a tomato, orange, carrot etc) foods which will let you lose weight without feeling hungry and will also give you plenty of energy so you can do justice to your exercise program.

So reverse the cycle of weight gain by boosting your metabolic fat burning machinery and let it do its job. Sure, it might take a little effort but I am sure you agree your new strong, lean, healthy body will more than make up for it wouldn’t you agree?
