Professor Robert Kushner of Northwestern University and clinical director of the Northwestern Comprehensive Center on Obesity said that his overweight patients often tell him they are not getting the results they want from exercise. These patients will typically say that they have been working out three days a week for 30 to 45 minutes for several months and I have lost 1 or 2 pounds.

Dr Kushner said that he advise his overweight patients that exercise is very good for them, but for successful weight loss, he emphasizes a healthy diet in the beginning. “Firstly, we’ve got to get a hold on your diet,” Dr Kushner said. “Then, as you are losing weight, feeling better and you are getting lighter, you can then shift more and more toward being more physically active and then living a physically active lifestyle for the rest of your life which is critical to keeping your weight off permanently.

James O. Hill, PhD, professor of pediatrics medicine and the director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado at Denver said that Prof Kushner’s weight loss strategy is a reasonable approach to losing weight effectively but others have had success including physical activity early on. It is easier to cut 1,000 calories from a bloated diet than to burn off 1,000 calories through exercise.

Prof Hill went on to emphasize that there are numerous studies that show that exercise is associated with weight loss when done in enough volume and consistently. It all depends how much exercise you do.

Another medical doctor, Pamela Peeke, MD, MPH, FACP, said that she emphasizes getting exercise immediately with obese patients, partly for its mind body benefits.

Dr Peeke said that she asks her patients to start walking as a way to “celebrate” their body with activities. “For years, they have blown off their body, so by having them actually using their body, they can begin to integrate their body back into their life and not use it as a source of torture or torment or shame.”

All the weight loss experts metioned above agreed that no matter how you lose the extra pounds, you need to be active to keep them off. “You can’t find very many people maintaining a healthy weight who are not exercsing regularly,” Prof Hill said. “What we find is that people who focus on diets alone are not very successful in the long run without also focusing on regular exercise”.

He further warned that people can be wildly successful temporarily at losing weight through diet alone, but there are plenty of data to show that those people regain the weight if they are not physically active or exercising regularly. “When it comes to weight loss, you can’t talk about diet alone and you can’t talk about exercise alone because you absolutely have to address both issues at the same time,” declared Dr Timothy Church, MD, MPH, PhD, director of preventive medicine research at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La.

“The average person overestimates the amount of activity they are doing by about 30% and underestimates their food intake by about 30%,” said Kathianne Sellers Williams, MEd, RD, LD, a registered dietitian, personal trainer, and wellness coach in Atlanta. She said, “When I am looking at people’s food consumption and activities, sometimes things just don’t add up,” she said. “I do think that people think, oh, I just did 60 minutes at the gym or I just did 30 minutes at the gym and think that counteracts a lot of what they are eating. But the reality is, our food portions are huge.” Plus, you have to look at all the other calories you ate or drank that day and how sedentary you were apart from your workout. The rest of the day, you are sitting down and you are also eating other things,” Dr Peeke said. “How are you going to burn of those stuff, let alone this extra little treat that you just thought you wanted?”

It is hard to accurately estimate how many calories you burn working out. Dr Timothy Church said, “If it is an intensive workout, you will kind of instinctively think, wow! That’s cool! I just put enough in the bank for two days. But and you really have not!”

For example, it is estimated that a 150 pound person who bikes furiously for 30 minutes burn about 340 calories. Let’s just say that this person would have burnt 70 calories sitting on the couch watching TV, the extra calories they burned by biking drops down to 270 calories. That’s less than the 300 calories in just one cup of cappuccino.

Treadmills and other exercise machines often have monitors that estimate how many calories you are burning. Those displays are “close, but for each individual as they can vary quite a bit,” said Prof Kong Chen, PhD, director of the metabolic research core at the National Institutes of Health. Prof Chen suggests using calorie displays on exercise equipment for motivation, but not to offset your eating. “For example, it doesn’t matter if the monitor says, 300 or 400 calories. If you do that every day or increase on that level, then you have achieved your purpose. But if you’re feeding yourself against that, then no, I wouldn’t recommend that”.

Those machines may not subtract the calories you would burn without exercising. “It isn’t 220 calories for those 40 minutes of exercise versus zero. If they were sitting at work or playing with their kids, they are probably burning 60 to 70 calories during that period of time,” Prof Kushner said. “You have to minus out what you would burn if you didn’t exercise. So it really becomes much less.”

Therefore your best bet for effective weight loss is to lead a physically active lifestyle that goes above and beyond a brief bout of exercise. “It is not just about 30 minutes of exercise a day, it is about avoding being sedentary.” Dr Chen said.

So the message isn’t that the half hour on the treadmill isn’t any good, it is just that the 30 minutes on the treadmill is not going to make up sedentary hours. So you should weave in physical activities throughout the entire day.

So which is the best method for losing weight effectively and to keep the pounds off permanently? Diet or exercise? The answer is both together.

According to researched in the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), three brain areas of a patient with panic disorder lack a key component which is a chemical messenger system that regulates emotion. Following a series of brain scans done on panic disorder patients to find anxiety disorder treatments, it is revealed that a type of serotonin receptor is reduced by nearly a third in three structures straddling the center of the brain. The finding published in January 2004 in the Journal of Neuroscience, is the first in living humans to show that the receptor, which is pivotal to the action of widely prescribed anti-anxiety medications, may be abnormal in the disorder, and may help to explain how genes might influence vulnerability. This research was conducted by Drs. Alexander Neumeister and Wayne Drevets of the NIMH Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program.

Statistics show that about 2.4 million Americans have panic attack strikes suddenly, and experience feelings of intense fear and physical symptoms sometimes confused with a heart attack. If these symptoms go unchecked, the disorder often sets in motion an unbearable psychological syndrome of agoraphobia, which is avoiding public places. Researches have long suspected that panic disorders are genetic components since it runs in families but the new finding suggests that genes might increase the risk of disorder by coding for decreased expression of the receptors. These findings have evidence in recent animal testing. In 2002, Dr. Rene Hen and her colleagues from Columbia University reported that a strain of gene “knockout” mice, engineered to lack the receptor during a critical period in early development, exhibit anxiety traits in adulthood, such as a reluctance to begin eating in an unfamiliar environment.

Various researches with successful results have enabled the scientists in overcoming panic disorder. Most of the anxiety disorder treatments are concerned with controlling the symptoms panic attacks, reduce their number and severity, and reduce the anxiety and fear associated with having another attack. The effect is doubled if the medication if it is combined with some natural methods of treatments; for example counseling and home treatment, therapy and relaxation courses. Medication choices to treat panic disorder come in the form of SSRIs which are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil. Benzodiapines such as Xanax, Valium,

Most of the medical professionals would prefer a combination of medicine and other approaches. However the best medication for panic disorder is considered to be cognitive-behavioral therapy, which focuses on the way a person thinks and altering certain behavior patterns. It allows the person to build an optimistic approach and would tell the about some efficient ways to handle a panicky situation. Combining these two therapies results in less frequent panic attacks. A combination of anxiety attack medication would make the symptoms disappear in some time. The dosage of medicine and the therapy sessions are generally increased if the patient does not see the results within 6-8 weeks.

Overcoming panic disorder takes quite awhile as it depends on the severity of the case. Normally, medication is continues for a year or longer and then decreased gradually over several weeks. In some cases, panic attacks tend to occur after medication is stopped; hence doctors will continue the medication for a few more months for you just so that you can keep the symptoms under control. Most medical practitioners would advice and recommend patients to seek for therapy and self-relaxation techniques before administering medication to them. This is because once medication is given; the patient might be depended on the drug. Self relaxation methods come in the form of yoga and pilates. A walk on the beach and even jogging can help cope with panic attack and stress. Life’s a Gas – A New Approach to Diverticulitis, Flatulence and Gas Pains

We want to discuss a particularly grievous condition that plagues millions of people in our culture from midlife onwards. It is a condition known to be culture-specific, suffered by affluent Westerns more than by any other group of people. And its cause is said to be unknown to modern medicine. It’s called diverticulitis.

Diverticulitis is a pain in the butt for millions of people, literally, since it involves the colon and rectum. What happens is that the wall of the colon, or large intestine, becomes weakened over time from increased pressure of unknown cause. The pressure within the colon causes weakened areas to pocket outwards, creating sacs for digested matter to collect and fester. These sacs are called diverticula. When you have these sacs you are said to have diverticulosis. When diverticula become infected and inflamed, the condition is called diverticulitis, which can be as painful as appendicitis and can lead to rupture of the colon wall, a very dangerous situation. The key issue involved in this condition is the creation of increased pressure within the large intestine. It is the force of this pressure that causes the sacs to form.

Knowing what causes the increased pressure, then, is essential to the prevention and treatment of this condition. At one time it was thought by medicine that the diet might be too high in fiber, causing a blockage of digestion and the increased colon pressure. But lowering the fiber of the diet did not significantly alter the condition. Then it was thought that too little fiber prevented proper elimination, and high fiber diets were recommended. Unfortunately, this did not help the condition, either. Diverticulitis is also equally common among vegetarians as it is among meat eaters. While special interest groups promoting certain diets present research supporting their dietary view as preventive of diverticulitis, there is contrasting research to balance it. So, the overall research on diverticulitis has been inconclusive regarding the cause of increased colon pressure that creates this dreadful condition. And in the absence of knowing the cause, medicine can merely offer pain relief with drugs, antibiotics for the infections, and surgery for particularly nasty, abscessed pockets. As for prevention, the current suggestion is to eat more fiber, making th bowels need to eliminate more frequently.

Of course, one thing was overlooked in the medical research on diverticulitis. The most common reason for increased colon pressure is not really a medical issue, but a cultural one. That is why medicine has missed it. Furthermore, this cultural practice causes the medical profession to suffer from diverticulitis to an even greater extent than their patients.

It all has to do with answering Nature when it calls.

We live in a society that trains us from birth to hold in our waste products. From the pressures of diaper training, to the pressures of using public toilets at school, to the pressures of working without the choice of taking needed potty breaks, or where a toilet is simply not available, our culture has pressured us into holding it in. Of course, this creates pressure in the colon. After all, one of the simplest ways to increase colon pressure is to close the anal sphincter while the intestine is contracting.

Everyone has experienced this one time or another. Perhaps the urge came when you were involved in a social situation that you could not conveniently stop simply because you had to answer Nature’s call. Or it could have been while driving, and a rest stop or service station was nowhere to be found. Even if there was a convenient restroom, some people are uncomfortable defecating in a public restroom and prefer holding it in until home. Whatever the reason, the fact is that our culture makes personal waste management an issue that is not always easily resolved, promoting procrastination rather than elimination. The result is increased colon pressure and diverticula formation.

In addition to holding in waste, there is the even greater problem of holding in gas. The technical term for this is flatus retention. It’s what most people are trained to do in public, from school days onward. This is why diverticulitis is more prevalent among professional, affluent Westerns, than among the poor of third world countries. The higher your status, the less acceptable your flatus. It seems that poverty buys a right to pass wind when needed, while affluence creates the need for greater discretion. Yet, the sad fact is that the pressure of the fart must go somewhere. Either pass wind or have your intestine blow up. The choice is yours.

Now you can see why medicine says the cause of diverticulitis is unknown. A cultural taboo enshrouds this topic, preventing its unbiased and honest consideration. Interestingly, there was one article connecting diverticulitis with holding in gas. It was in the British medical journal, Lancet, in 1975. The article is entitled, “Flatus retention is the major factor in diverticular disease”. But the information was ignored. Medicine seems more comfortable prescribing drugs and surgery for diverticulitis than simply telling people to poop and fart more often.

For those who suffer from diverticulosis or diverticulitis, you can perform your own self study. Over the next three months, note how often you feel the urge to eliminate, but find yourself choosing, for one reason or another, to hold it in. Pay particular attention to your need to pass wind, and how often you don’t. Make every effort to allow your body to do what it wants to do. If you have a partner, you may want him or her to try this self study at the same.

A new approach for treating diabetes in homeopathy

It is unfortunate that most of diabetics think insulin is the medicine to cure diabetes. The fact is that insulin is the only management of the case. It is the substitute to replace the insulin deficiency in the body. Similarly various diet restrictions also are the complementary substances to mange diabetes. But what about cure? Cure I mean the stage of life where the patient will not take anti diabetes medicine any more and still live a healthy life. We see a patient of diabetes is put under medication first then after some days we find that he has to replace medicine with low doses of insulin injection. Mr N, aged 60 is having Diabetes Mellitus (DM) since 10 years. Since then he feels thirst very often but he takes little water at a time. He also has hypertension.

Past medical history shows typhoid. Family medical history shows father- diabetes, Mother- Arthritis, Uncle (maternal) – asthma

All physical generalities like appetite, thirst, sweat, sleep etc. are normal.

In mental generalities we got some individualistic symptoms. They are-

-         Unrealistic financial insecurity. Though he has a lot of wealth but feels as if something will happen and he will lose them.

-         Physical insecurity. Always there is fear of ill health. Fear of cancer is mostly there. That is why he used to visit all possible number of doctors and consumes all possible varieties of remedies.

-         Avarice. Though he is a wealthy person but while paying even medicine cost he is hesitant. Always puts a string on every expense.

-         Fastidious. Everything he wants to know in detail.

Remedy selection- The above mental generalities clubbed with DM, hypertension, thirst for small quantity of water in small interval indicated the remedy ARSENICUM ALBUM.

Case-2

Mrs A aged 55 has DM since 7 years. Often has gastric problem. Off let developed joint pain.

Past medical history shows nothing abnormal. Family medical history shows ,brother died of cancer, mother had arthritis.

All physical generalities were normal.

By nature very sweet speaking and having polite attitude. Whatever work her family members load on her shoulder she will do definitely.

On further enquiry the mental picture reflected as follows. After marriage she lived in the joint family of in-laws. The mother-in-law was very dominating. There was even no independence of eating and talking. Even a small mistake of her will bring severe criticism from mother-in-law that to in the form of a big shout and scolding. Though she used to feel angry internally but never allowed to express it. This situation continued for around 15 years. Prolonged suppression of anger reflected physically in the form of DM later.

This cause of suppressed anger resulting DM called for the remedy STAPHYSAGRIA.

Thus homeopathy has individualistic approach of treating cases of diabetes.
