A Healthful Diet Is Vital Basic Nutrition Facts

When seeking optimum health choosing a healthful diet is of vital importance. The variety of choices makes this process rather difficult. Who is to say what a good or bad choice is? Today’s fast paced world allows little or no time to study what is healthy and what isn’t; people are left at the mercy of charlatans. It may be a good idea to seek the assistance of a nutritional expert, whose credentials are easily verified.

The majority of diets are centered upon caloric intake. Some people need 2500 or more calories a day. Others do just as well with far fewer calories. How do I verify how many calories I need? A qualified nutritionist may be able to help a dieter determine these figures.

The body employs carbohydrates, fats and proteins as the primary sources of energy. Carbohydrates, mainly glucose and fructose, are what the body looks to first for its energy demands. These are broken down swiftly by the intestine for immediate energy needs. Starches, also known as complex carbohydrates are more difficult for the body to manage, thus taking longer to digest. Due to this fact they should be eaten only in moderation, although they are an excellent source of energy.

Despite being chemically similar to carbohydrates, fats also contain fatty acids. These fatty acids are vital for multiple functions in the body. A healthy diet will contain fats in it, albeit in a limited amount.

Meat seems the obvious choice for protein. Despite this, beans, nuts and legumes can also be ideal sources of protein. The average person can meet daily requirements by eating 3 ounces of meat, or other protein source, per meal. Protein supplies energy and helps build muscle.

Creating a daily menu can assist a person to balance their diet. The awareness afforded from the creation of a menu plan can help keep a person motivated to reach their goals. Start with a protein source and build around it. Carbohydrates can be added with rice or pasta. Salads are an easy way to add vegetables to a meal. The assorted colors can make any meal festive. Condiments should be used with restraint, as they often contain large amounts of fat and other calorie sources.

Fats have the highest calorie per gram ratio, with 9 calories per gram. That is more than two times what other calorie sources contain. Restraining the intake of high fat foods can help control the intake of cholesterol, too.

Every carbohydrate has 4 calories per gram; although healthy sources will include vitamins, minerals and fiber as well. Fruits and grains are some excellent examples.

Candy is high in fat and sugars, while containing much lower amounts of other nutrients, if any at all. This makes candy an unwise choice, even in small amounts. Healthy diets will contain fats and sugars, but in regulated amounts. Formatting these substances as candy renders them virtually useless to the body unless vigorous exercise is scheduled for the next hour or more.

Listing the foods that have been eaten recently can help the dieter decide what in the diet is useful and what is not. Going the next step by planning a menu can help the dieter regulate what is being eaten. Using one’s head for more than consuming calories seems the best way to lose weight in a healthful manner.

Uterine Fibroids – Here Are the Basics

December 24th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

O.K. So what are they?

Uterine Fibroids (leiomyomas) are common noncancerous (benign) tumors that occur within the muscle walls of the uterus (womb). Uterind fibroids can be the size of a pinhead and show no signs or symptoms that they are there, or they can be very painful and grow to a 10 inch diameter.

There are four types of uterine fibroids:

Subserosal Fibroids, develop under the outside uterine covering. Intramural Fibroids, develop within the uterine wall. Submucosal Fibroids, develop under the uterus lining. Pedunculated Fibroids, develop on a “stalk” or stem-like structure attached to the inside or the outside of the uterus.

Fibroids may grow as a single nodule or in clusters. They may range in size from 1 mm to more than 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter. Fibroids in the uterus are a common cause of heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pain and pressure in women. During pregnancy, fibroids can greatly increase in size.

What are the Symptoms?

Some women with uterine fibroids experience no symptoms at all. Symptoms may include excessive and prolonged menstrual bleeding, pain, abdominal mass effect, frequent urination or urgency or constipation and many others.

When symptoms appear, they can vary greatly, depending on the size and exact location of the fibroid tumors. Women sometimes underestimate the impact of their symptoms because they have become accustomed to the excessive bleeding, pain and the pressure that fibroids can cause. Also, for some reason African-American women develop symptoms faster and with greater severity than other women.

What does one do about them?

Uterine fibroids often do not require treatment, but when they are problematic, they may be treated surgically, non-surgically, with medication or with alternative treatments. The very heavy menstrual bleeding, clotting and pelvic pain, that fibroids sometimes cause leads many women to seek treatment.

What about treatment?

There are several different types of treatments:

Hormonal: Uterine fibroid tumors require estrogen and progesterone to grow, and without these hormones, fibroid tumors usually shrink in size. Hormonal treatments (such as birth control pills) may help control excessive menstrual bleeding caused by fibroids in some patients.

Non-surgical: Uterine Fibroid Embolization, UFE – Known medically as uterine artery embolization, approaches the treatment of fibroids by blocking the arteries that supply blood to them causing them to shrink or disappear. Uterine fibroid embolization is a more permanent solution than hormone therapy. When hormonal treatment is stopped the fibroid tumors usually grow back. UFE (Uterine Fibroid Embolization) isn’t considered to be surgery, but it is generally done at a hospital or specialized clinic. This uterine fibroids treatment procedure usually takes between 1 and 3 hours, depending on how long it takes to position the catheter and how easily the catheter can be positioned in the arteries to the uterus.

Although uterine artery embolization has been in use for two decades to treat bleeding after childbirth, it wasn’t until early 1997 that the technique was introduced as a potential treatment for uterine fibroids.

Follow-up studies have shown that nearly 90 percent of women who have their fibroids treated by uterine fibroid embolization experience either significant or complete resolution of their fibroid-related symptoms.

Surgical: Surgery for uterine fibroids involves either removing the fibroids (myomectomy) or the entire womb (hysterectomy). Surgery has risks, including bleeding and infection. About a third of the more than 500,000 hysterectomies done in the U.S. each year are done because of fibroids. Most of the women having these operations are said to be unaware of the non-surgical options.

Alternative treatment: Alternative treatments for uterine fibroid tumors also abound. Naturopaths, homeopaths, acupuncturists, chiropractors, and other alternative health care providers have treatments to offer as well. While some of these are not as well supported by scientific studies that prove effectiveness, the treatments are usually safer and provide a less invasive alternative than surgery.

Remember that some medical treatments for uterine fibroid tumors can affect your fertility. For this and other reasons it is very important to seriously investigate and consider alternative treatments for uterine fibroids.

Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health provider prior to starting any new treatment or with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition.

Possible Leukemia Causes and Risk Factors

December 23rd, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

Leukemia is a disease that is considered to be life-threatening. It requires prompt intervention when discovered, in order to maximize the chances of recovering through specific treatment and therapy. Leukemia is basically a type of cancer of the bone marrow and blood, caused by inappropriate cellular activity. The disease can be of different forms, according to the types of blood cells that cause its development. Also, if leukemia is developing rapidly, it is called acute leukemia, while if the disease is developing slowly, it is referred to as chronic leukemia.

The direct leukemia causes are still unknown. In present, medical science isn’t able to establish the specific leukemia causes. However, a strong connection between certain genetic factors and the development of the disease has been revealed. Leukemia occurs on the background of genetic failure that causes the excessive production of incomplete, partially matured blood cells. Also, leukemia has a hereditary character, allowing the transmission of genetic predispositions to disease from one generation to another. Although many factors are known to contribute to the development of leukemia, they alone can’t be considered leukemia causes.

Despite the fact that statistics indicate a higher incidence of the disease in people that are exposed to some environmental factors of risk, leukemia doesn’t seem to be caused by neither of them in particular. Among the environmental factors that are thought to be leukemia causes, here are some of the most plausible ones:

- Smoking – smoking is thought to increase the chances of being affected by leukemia. Although statistics show that around 20 percent of acute leukemia cases are related to smoking, leukemia also occurs to people that don’t smoke and therefore it can’t be considered a leukemia cause on itself;

- Prolonged exposure to radiation – Radiation is considered to facilitate the development of leukemia. It is believed that exposure to X-rays can be a leukemia cause;

- Prolonged exposure to benzene – statistics reveal that this is a major factor of risk in some forms of leukemia, such as myelogenous leukemia;

- Chemotherapy and cancer treatment – previous cancer treatments and chemotherapy are known to facilitate the occurrence and development of leukemia and can be considered plausible leukemia causes. Within a few years from the completion of chemotherapy and other treatments for certain forms of cancer, most people can develop leukemia.

Among the genetic factors that are considered to be leukemia causes, the following ones are thought to be the most important:

- chromosome abnormalities – some rare genetic syndromes are known to contribute to leukemia causes;

- Immune system genetic problems – a weak immune system is very likely to facilitate the occurrence of leukemia and therefore can be considered a leukemia cause;

- Down syndrome – children born with this syndrome have a very high risk of developing acute leukemia.

The list of possible leukemia causes can continue further, but these are the most common factors that are considered to be interrelated with leukemia. While some of them can be prevented, others reside within the genes and in present can’t be corrected. In future, however, thanks to medical advance, we will probably be able to prevent leukemia and other forms of cancer.

Precautions to Consider While Using Hair Removal Creams

December 14th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

Women only preferred hair removal creams – but that was before some years! These days, even the men are interested in these creams. Needless to state, but the market is booming with many products that are known to accomplish the same – remove hairs from the body. People blindly follow suit and invest on one of these without looking into the complications that might arise at a later date. Some of them along with the functioning of these creams are listed in the passages! Like every other medical supplement out there (yes, hair removal creams can be classified into that niche), when used with care and caution, the positive aspects can be realized.

The nature of the cream is the first factor to be harbored in mind. By nature, I mean the following – creams that aid in shedding the hair from the body and products that aid in imparting a feeling that the hair is removed. Readers might be confused regarding the second paradigm. These creams are noted to act on the coloring of the hair. When the color of the hair is absent, no one will realize the presence of hairs. Simple, yet very effective if you ask me.

Always check the ingredients that are employed on the hair removal cream. Some products might be manufactured using synthetic compounds, while some might be manufactured using natural ingredients. The synthetic products are highly effective – they might be too effective for some people. This will result in burning of the skin. On the other hand, the products that are derived from the natural ingredients do not have any such side-effects! Basically, all these principles boil down to personal preference, but I would strongly suggest experimenting with various products before committing to a certain hair removal cream!

Instructions (for usage) will be outlined on the product package. These instructions are provided for a reason. It is imperative that you must read and analyze the aspects that are listed. Stick to those guidelines and you will be in the safe zone. Deviate from it and you are unnecessarily inviting troubles. There is a certain time frame between each application of the product. Always stick to that time frame, which can be as high as 72 hours or even lower (48 hours). Test for sensitivity, by applying a small amount of the same on the surface of the inner hands.

If allergic reactions are noticed, skip the product for something else. Do not worry for the options are in plenty. At least one will be able to bid goodbye to those days when hair waxes and other pain inducing procedures were the norm. These creams ensure that you do not realize any sort of pains – while applying or after applying! Paste the cream uniformly over the surface of the skin. The hair cells are very sensitive to these products. Read the reviews to establish a good insight about the best hair removing creams out there. Do keep us posted, by the way!

The Dietary Supplement that Relieves Acid Reflux Faster & Better Than Drugs & Antacids

December 6th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

There is a dietary supplement that relieves acid reflux and heartburn just as good, if not better than the prescription medications, over-the-counter treatments and antacids normally used to fight these symptoms. In addition to the instant relief you receive from it, there are also other major benefits to switching to it instead of what you are presently taking.

This Unique method explained in the Acid Reflux Diet guide, completely cures your acid reflux and gives you permanent relief: Click here for Acid Reflux Diet Guide instant download

First, it does not generate any side affects these drugs are so well know for. Second, when you compare the cost of it to these medicines, it is virtually free. Third, unlike the drugs, you will not develop a resistance to it and be forced to constantly increase your dosage to get the same relief that you did when you first started taking these drugs.

These pharmaceutical companies get you in a wicked spiral that you just can’t get out of when you first start taking these medications. First, they and the doctors tell you there is NO cure for acid reflux, heartburn or indigestion. This is simply NOT true.

Next, they don’t inform you of any of the side affects and finally they hook you on the drugs and keep you come back spending your hard earned money for a few hours of relief. They sure are not going to inform you of the dietary supplement that works just as good as those drugs because they can’t make any money on it. They can’t get a patient on something that has been around for thousands of years. So why bother with your basic health.

All that being said, you really should only use the dietary supplement in emergency situations. What you should be doing is curing your problem permanently by learning which foods and herbs provide the healing powers you require and which foods do damage to your stomach, esophagus and digestive track and leave you in this perpetual spiral of pain and poor health.

Puberty: Who Needs It? (Growing Up Smart Body Fact #20)

November 25th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

My best friend grew a mustache when he was 13. And, as I remember, Debbie in middle school looked a lot older than her 12 years suggested. How did that happen? It’s all about puberty, of course.

As adults, we know puberty is part of growing up. Our children, however, still have to face the physical and emotional changes it brings. And whether they admit it or not, every child has questions about the process at some point. That’s where parents come in.

Puberty isn’t as tough if your kids understand a few basics. To kick things off, here is a short article for that young man or woman in your house. For more information, we recommend getting your child one of the many great specialty books about growing up that are available these days. Good luck!

“Puberty is the name for the time when your body begins to develop and change. Growing up to be an adult means that a lot of big changes are on the way. It also means taking responsibility for the care and health of your body.

The big changes will probably start when you’re 10 to 15 years old. But that’s not true for everyone. You could get started earlier or even a little later. Don’t worry if your best friend looks older and more grown-up. You’ll catch them. Puberty starts and finishes on its own schedule—not yours.

Once puberty does begin, your body will seem to have a mind of its own. Your body will change and at times you’ll grow so fast your shirtsleeves and pant legs will always be too short. Some young men and women can grow 4 or more inches in a year and suddenly stop. But, wait! Even after you think you’re done, you could still grow a little more.”
You probably wonder what you’ll look like after all the changes are over. Heredity is what determines the shape of your nose, how big your feet are, and how tall you’ll be. If your mom and dad are tall and thin, then you’ll probably be tall and thin, too. But, nothing is for certain. To know for sure, you just have to wait and see.

Author and publisher, Frank Hawkins, is passionate about helping young people grow up healthy and wise. It’s no surprise, then, that he co-founded Boy’s Guide Books in 2007 to do just that. What started out as a single book Frank wrote for his son has turned into a popular and respected series of “how-to” books trusted by young men and women everywhere.

Boy’s Guide Books publishes “how-to” books for children and teens. Through our books, blog, and social network, we offer practical, straightforward, no-nonsense information and advice about health, hygiene, fitness, nutrition, and everything in-between.

Recognizing the Warning Signs of Autism

November 23rd, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

How can you tell if your child has autism?

This is a question that has perhaps puzzled many parents, especially those with children showing unusual red flags pointing to autism. However, knowing whether one has autism or not can be a very difficult, strenuous, and often emotional task. The person involved, after all, can be loved one, a child, a relative-and, naturally, you wouldn’t want them to be afflicted by this horrible disorder. Still, the task must be done, no matter how difficult it is. Unfortunately, the signs are not as clear cut as they could be. For one, autism is not like a simple ailment like a fever where you can use a thermometer to measure whether one is inflicted by autism or not. Experts do tests do determine the presence of the ailment, of course, but how do you determine if you need to bring your child to the professionals for a more comprehensive analysis of the situation.

Many say that autism cannot fully be assessed until the child has reached the age of two. At this age, certain developmental signs can become more pronounced, hence making the assessment easier. But there are certain signs that can help you determine early on.

For instance, by the age of six months above, you can detect early signs of the disorder by checking the child’s social and oral skills. When the child does not coo or babble, does not make eye contact, or does not smile, your “red flags” should be raised, although might say you should wait for a few more months to check for other signs. Other “signs” at this point include: non-participation or non-response in any vocal activities and non-response to any game or activity that require their reaction (a peek a boo game, for instance).

At the age of one, the child should show attempts to speak, point, wave, respond when being called by name, grasp-or, basically, just to simply react. One of the main and most assuring sign of autism is indifference, the lack of reaction to any activity, sound, or visual elements around him. An autistic child, in turn, may also be overly sensitive to certain smells, sounds, and/or textures. Furthermore, if the child is prone to making repetitive actions or motions, along with other signs, parents should bring their child to experts right away. Other red flags: resistance to chance and an unusual attachment to a particular object.

At age two, the signs should be more pronounced. Along with the cited warning signs, other autism red flags include lack of joyful expression, indifference to social activities, loss of speech (by the child’s 24th month, he should be able to at least say two-word phrases that are meaningful or not simply imitated from someone else), among others.

Generally, the three main criteria of these sign are: impaired social interaction, restricted movement and interests, and impaired communication skills.

Obviously, as one could tell from these signs, it may be possible to tell if a child has autism at an early age, although it is not a possibility for most children. The signs that become apparent are not constant, and they are differently not standard to every child with the disorder. In any case, once these signs are detected, you should bring your child to medical experts who can treat the symptoms and help your child live a normal life.

Is Autism Automatically a Social Death?

November 22nd, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

A significant number of people think that the 1988 film Rain Man is an excellent source of information regarding the issue of autism. But in fact, it isn’t. Instead, according to a BBC report in 2007, films like Rain Man may have installed a number of misconceptions about this brain development disorder. And these misconceptions-some positive, some neutral, most of them damaging-are turning autism into a social stigma. But those who are well versed in the issue of autism know that autism does not automatically spell social death. While it is true that, based on the restrictions the disorder can cause, a child’s life can possibly be different compared to those without the disorder due to autism, it is also possible to make the child’s life as normal as possible.

In the BBC report, a survey said that many people believe people with autism harbor special talents or skills, as if in compensation to the other skills lost. However, this isn’t true. Not every autistic child has particular enhanced skills, like the character from Rain Man (played by Dustin Hoffman) who has eidetic memory. There are also many reports of people with autism excelling in music or the arts due to their enhanced sense of hearing, for instance (it should be noted that most people with the disorder do have overly sensitive hearing). Experts say that these special skills and abilities are, in fact, extremely rare. Unfortunately, many people do not know this, so they expect people with autism to be some sort of savant in a particular field. This causes the social stigma experienced by people with autism to be more severe.

Another cause of this stigma: the expectation that all autistic people are the same. Of course, they aren’t-the disorder affects people in different ways, with varying intensity. Some people with autism have severe symptoms, while others exhibit very few signs. In fact, it is quite possible to be autistic and have the ability to socialize with other people; the effects of the disorder may be evident in other areas. Again, not many people know this. Many generalize autism when, in fact, it is a treacherous disorder with varied end results. For instance, many people, especially in the past, exhibit autistic traits-yet they managed to live their lives normally. While some of aspects of their lives are limited, they function normally in other respects, mainly because the intensity of autism varies.

Just consider the list of people with this disorder, many of which have accomplished great things. Christopher Knowles, for one, is an acclaimed poet (who is well known for his work with theater legend Philip Glass) who was diagnosed with autism. Dan Aykroyd, a well known actor, has a mild Asperger syndrome. Pulitzer Award-winning author Tim Page (well known for his music criticism) also has Asperger.

Basically, the activities of an autistic person naturally depend on what he is most inclined to do, or usually up to what extent he or she is affected by the disorder. There are instances when the disorder is too severe, rendering a person totally unable to do these things. Still, one way to let them do what they can is to prevail against social stigmas. There is nothing be ashamed of about autism. With the proper care and nurture, a child can live fruitful against the odds.
