Arthritis, diet, circulation and traditional Chinese medicine

June 22nd, 2010  |  Published in Sexual Health

The following is an excerpt from Hot and Cold Health by R. G. Heft (Acupuncture Physician FL 1992- 2002) based on traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines and the questioning and counseling of 10,000+ Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is based on the theory, observation that everything is an ongoing balance of opposites, many of which we control through diet, exercise, sex, thought, etc.

All disease is defined by its collection of symptoms. All symptoms are defined, produced by biological functions. All biological functions are produced by biological structures (organs, bones, muscles, nerves, etc.), which in turn, are produced, maintained and cleansed by blood, nutrients.  The body, digests, transforms food, nutrients into blood into structure into function, into health or disease.

Arthritis is a generic term for inflammation of the joint that tends to cause pain, swelling, pain, redness, etc. A joint is where two or more bones join. The joint, space between the movable bones is composed of fluid sacs, in addition to cartilage (gelatinous substance that caps the end of the bones). Both act as shock absorbers.  Ligaments hold bones together.  Tendons attach muscles to ligaments. Muscles contract and expand according to their nerves, electrical supply, stimulation, which in turn pulls and relaxes the tendons, ligaments, moving the bones.

Blood, nutrients build, fuel and cleanse the muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones. Poor nutrition, diet and or poor circulation tend to reduce, thin the blood, which in turn, thins, dries, weakens, pains and or inflames the joints. Poor posture, misalignment and or injury can also adversely affect the joints, i.e. cause arthritic symptoms.

There are three types of arthritis: rheumatoid (autoimmune), gout (uric acid) and osteo (bone on bone), Rheumatoid Arthritis is more common in women (middle aged), although it does attack men. The difference is cause. Women tend to suffer from blood, protein and fat deficiency via diet and menstruation.

Many women tend to eat anemic diets: low protein, low fat (milk, yogurt, soft cheeses, beans, nuts and seeds) and high carbohydrate (pasta, bread, salads, tropical fruits, juices, etc.). Women menstruate monthly 30+ years from the first period, menarche (teen, preteen) to the last (menopause).  This combination tends to thin and weaken the blood, which in turn, thins, weakens, dries, inflames and pains everything else, especially the extremities: arms, legs, hands, feet, bones, muscles, tendons, etc

Men tend to suffer the opposite: too much, stagnant blood via high protein, high fat diets, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, congested liver, etc. restricting, reducing blood flow, which in turn, inflames, dries, thins and pains the joints: bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, etc. especially in the extremities: arms and legs.

All blood passes in and out the liver. The liver stores, cleanses (filters excess protein, fat, cholesterol, impurities, etc.) and releases the blood. High protein and high fat (especially animal) diets in excess tend to thicken the blood, which in turn, thickens, clogs and swells the liver reducing not only liver, cleansing function but also distribution, circulation of blood. Less cholesterol, fat is removed form the blood, more stays in the bloodstream, arteries, veins, heart, liver, brain, etc. Less blood is circulated as more (blood) passes into the liver (clogged, swollen) than out reducing the overall amount circulated to the rest of the body, especially to the extremities: head, arms and legs, which contain no vital organs.

The vital organs (heart, liver, lungs, etc.) located in the center of the body (abdomen and chest) command the blood. In times of drought, and or the common cold, less blood is circulated to the extremities (includes the head).

.

Inappropriate diet (overbuilt or under built) is a major cause of rheumatoid arthritis. It is also tends to cause gout, excess uric acid that accumulates in the blood and joints. Uric acid is a by-product of protein (especially animal) digestion. High protein, high fat diets, in the extreme, tend to cause too much uric acid in the blood and joints. Gout is more prevalent in western countries and or those eating high protein, high fat diets. It tends to attack men (high protein, high fat) more than women.

Osteoarthritis cannot be improved through diet or herbs. You cannot grow cartilage (separates and cushions the bones) where there is none. You can grow cartilage where there is some. Glucosamine sulfate ((1500 mg/ day) and other supplements (bovine cartilage) have been shown to grow cartilage. Solgar, Solaray, Enzymatic Therapy, Twin Lab and Natures Plus are high quality companies that research, manufacture and distribute. I owned and operated a small health food store, Food and Thought, Hollywood, Fl (1984-2001). I sold a lot of Glucosamine Sulfate and never heard a complaint, just praise. Check with your doctor before making any changes.

Dietary cures for arthritis via blood deficiency and or stagnation are relatively simple. Blood deficiency (via low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate diets) requires the hotter middle diet, meal plan (more protein and fat: red meat, chicken, turkey, etc, cooked foods, soups, vegetables and spices. Spices (cardamom, cumin, coriander, fennel, ginger, cayenne, etc.) are hot in nature. They increase digestion, improve circulation, etc.

Weak digestion transforms and transports less food, nutrients into blood.  Too many cold and damp foods, drinks (milk, yogurt, salads, fruit, juices, cold drinks, etc.), in excess and or at the beginning of a meal, tend to dilute and weaken digestion (acid, enzymes, etc.) reducing nutrient absorption, blood, circulation, etc. while increasing waste product, abdominal bloating, gas, loose stools.

Blood stagnation (clogged arteries, veins, liver, etc.) is also curable, depending on severity.  It is a disease of excess: too much protein and fat. The colder middle diet, meal plan is recommended. Reduce animal protein and fat, no more than one animal food per day and never at night. A little chicken or turkey is permissible. Eat more vegetables (cabbage) fruit (apples), drink peppermint tea, etc. Avoid alcohol. Bitter herbs (golden seal, gentian, etc.) may also help. Eat less, skip, space the meals (gives the body extra time, energy to digest excess) and do not eat late. Avoid nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant) which tend to aggravate, worsen arthritic conditions.

Hot salves (containing spices, camphor, capsicum/ cayenne pepper, etc.) used externally for reducing pain are also effective. Heat not only dries and warms but also moves. Spices, cooked foods move and warm the blood, and reduce pain via increased circulation, blood. They also help to thin the blood. Cumin, coriander and fennel are mild spices.

Medication, blood thinners can also cause arthritic symptoms. Blood thinners not only thin the blood of excess protein and fat (includes cholesterol), but also thin the bones, skin, hair, etc. which are all fed, thickened by the same blood, protein and fat. When you thin the blood, decrease protein and fat, you thin everything else.

Diet and Your Orgasm

May 26th, 2010  |  Published in Sexual Health

Sex is an important aspect of life. Sex is a complex matter: it involves many of your body organs in order to produce the desire that culminates in the sexual act that produces the sensations of sex and orgasm.

Diet plays a pivotal role in your sex and orgasm. First and foremost, you must be healthy in order to perform (in the case of men) the very sexual act, and to enjoy sex (orgasm in the case of women).

Orgasm or the enjoyment of sex is based on the sensation of pleasure, which is preceded by the enhancement of anticipation and desire. Yes, it is all in the mind. But the body affects the mind as well, and accordingly your diet has an overall impact on your sex life.

According to research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), fish oil not only improves your cardiovascular health but also reduces depression and aggression. In other words, fish oil elevates the dopamine levels in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter of the sensation of pleasure. Dopamine holds the key to female sexual pleasure or orgasm. In addition, male erection is contingent on a healthy heart to send sufficient blood to the male organ to produce the desired erection necessary to accomplish the sexual act.

Saturated and monounsaturated fats (from meat, poultry, and dairy products) also enhance the dopamine in your body. Therefore, a fat-free diet may help you lose not only your weight but also your sexual desire. Fish oil is a safe, healthy, and non-addictive way to effectively elevate the dopamine levels in your body to give you the desire, the performance, and the orgasm in sex. Trans fats (synthetic fats manufactured from other fats) in junk food and commercial basked goods will negate the effect of the fish oil you consume.

In addition to dopamine, serotonin is another neurotransmitter responsible for better sex in that it improves your overall mood and relieves stress that may result in performance anxiety in men and prevent women from reaching an orgasm.

That said, too much serotonin may not be good. Depressed individuals are often prescribed antidepressants to artificially raise their serotonin levels, resulting in lower libido and orgasmic capability. Remember, anything that produces a high is generally followed by a low – which could be damaging to sex. Therefore, avoid caffeine in tea, coffee, sodas, and chocolate. Even a diet of carbohydrates with no protein may spike the serotonin level, upsetting the balance. The key is to maintain a balanced serotonin level in your body for maximum enjoyment of sex.

The American culture is affected by the billion-dollar soy industry: you find soy in everything – from tofu, soy milk, to snack bars. Protein is important to your diet and your sexual health, but it need not come from soy alone. Soy may be good for menopausal women, but too much soy may adversely affect your testosterone levels, and testosterone governs sexual desire.

Changing the way you eat, and eating right will invigorate your sex life. Eat more fish – not the farm-raised ones. If you plan to take the fish oil supplement, get the “fish oil” rather than the fish oil with a particular fish, such as “salmon fish oil” or “cod liver oil.” A word of warning, overdosing on fish oil can lead to a risk of hemorrhage due to the blood-thinning properties of fish oil, so be careful. A balanced diet makes you sexually healthy.

How to Obtain Optimal Health

May 20th, 2010  |  Published in Sexual Health

You should already know that nutrition is very important to your quality of life. If you want to have a healthy life and lifestyle, you will need to have a healthy diet with proper nutrition. You might hear all the time that your nutrition greatly affects the way you live and your quality of life but have you ever really thought about why? Do you really understand why it is so important?

If you really want to take the steps to live the long life that you deserve and to be as healthy as possible and enjoy those years, than you need to learn all you can about the importance of optimal nutrition.  What you eat really affects your body and health.

1. What is optimal nutrition?
2. What nutrients do you need to be healthy?
3. What foods give you these nutrients?

Importance of Optimal Nutrition

Optimal nutrition is very important to your overall health and fitness. Studies have shown that people can actually live longer if they have healthy nutrition. It is proven that there is a link between optimal nutrition and long life and long term health.

If you take a look at society, you will notice an increasingly large number of people that are overweight and obese. You will also see problems such as poor teeth and acne, dry, brittle skin, dry hair and other problems. You will find many people on medications for headache, stomach problems, acid reflux, constipation, heart disease, high blood pressure and more. What may be more alarming than the high amount of medications is the fact that most people receive very little information about what is actually causing their disease or condition. Instead, they get a pill.

What many people never know is that what they are eating (or not eating) can be causing these health problems.  You also need to understand that you will have to make changes and adjustments to your intake over the years and stages of your life. Just like toddlers need a different diet from teenagers, you also need to alter your diet as you continue through all of life’s stages. Understanding what is best for you through each stage of your life is the best way to remain in optimal health.

Micro and Macronutrients

Many people hear that they need proper nutrition but just what does that mean exactly? What nutrients do you need to be healthy? Optimal nutrition will include a variety of different micronutrients and macronutrients. Micronutrients include certain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Macronutrients include carbohydrates, proteins and fats that make up the foods you eat.

There is too often a lot of myth surrounding the nutrients, our bodies and how we use these nutrients. This is why it is very important that you get all the facts when planning to change your lifestyle and diet. Many people are suffering from malnutrition and may not even know it. Many overweight individuals may be suffering from malnutrition. Just because you are eating does not mean you are eating the right things.

Micronutrients are the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that your body needs to be healthy. The specific ones and amounts of each will depend on your body, sex, age and other factors. Every person is different so there is not one set plan that works for everyone. You need to learn what works for you. As you change, grow older, etc. this will change again and you will continue to have to adjust this.

Macronutrients are the carbs, proteins and fats that you get from foods. The amounts of these that you need will vary as well. This is where many myths come in about what you should or should not eat. The facts are that too much of anyone can be bad and not enough can be bad. It’s all about finding a balance. This means those “All-Carb” or “No Carb” diets that are so popular on the market are really not the best thing for you.

What you choose to ingest in your body has a big impact on your overall health and your general well-being. People now eat more fast foods and frozen dinners and other quick meals that are not very nutritious at all. Some of these foods even have additives in them that can make them addictive so that you want more and more. People typically eat out of hunger and many of these foods do not work to satisfy your hunger leaving you wanting more or something else. Yet, they still have many calories and fat and other things that your body does not need.

Make the Committment

If you are serious in obtaining optimal health to the best of your ability, then take a look at your lifestyle in general. Are you eating the right foods? Are you exercising? Are you getting plenty of fresh air on a daily basis? Do you have positive relationships? If you find yourself answering “no” to these questions, then make the commitment to change. Talk with your family, friends, or a nutritionist. Check to see if there are support groups in your area related to health and lifestyle changes. Look into joining your local gym. Do your research and then purchase the right nutritional supplements that will help you achieve your goals.

If you at least try to make a change in one area, more are sure to follow! You are now on your way to optimal health.

Dieting Guide – High Protein, Low Carbohydrate Diet

November 23rd, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

If you are active in the gym, you will notice that many fitness enthusiasts tend to go on a high protein, low carb diet. What are the benefits of such a diet?

Firstly, you will always need a high amount of protein if you are working out regularly. When you workout, your put stress on your muscles. Protein will help your muscles repair and grow. As you continue to build lean muscle mass, you metabolism starts to increase. The higher the metabolism, the more fat the body burns.

Secondly, observe that most people are consuming way too much carb. This has a negative impact on the composition of the body. For instance, when an individual’s diet comprises mostly rice and a small amount of protein, this almost always lead to obesity. Why? Because it’s easier to convert carb to fat. And since the body doesn’t need so much carb to function, the excess is stored as fat.

Therefore, in order to stay slim and fit, it’s always wise to control your diet – that is, go on a high protein, low carb diet. How do you do so?

Tip 1: Eat smaller meals.

Whatever you are having for your regularly meals now, split the portion into half. Notice that when you finish half of your meal, you no longer feel hungry. Most people just keep eating until they feel bloated. That’s a sure sign that they are overeating. Never try to beat a crappy diet with exercise. It’ll never work. Make sure you stick to a proper eating plan in order to stay healthy.

Tip 2: Eat 2 more meals per day.

To compensate for the smaller meals, you are allowed to eat 2 more meals each day. The goal is to help you maintain a steady level of energy throughout the entire day. That is why professional athletes and bodybuilders eat as many as 6 meals a day. If you don’t have the habit of taking so many meals, you can always start by consuming a protein shake in the morning. Then progress to take another protein shake in the evening, before you go to bed.

Tip 3: Learn to prepare your own meals.

Since you can’t control how restaurants cook the meals, you find that sooner or later, you need to learn how to prepare your own meals. Knowing how to prepare your own meals help you to save money in the long run. The meals are healthier, and you have full control over the calories and nutrients you are consuming for the day.

When preparing meals, make sure that it’s a high protein, low carb meal. For example, a good meal contains the following ingredients.

4 oz chicken or turkey breast.

1 teaspoon of olive or flax seed oil.

1 scoop of mashed potatoes (your carb).

1 small portion of mixed salad.

A balanced meal should contain protein, carb, and a little bit of fat.

We provide tips on How to control your diet at our site regularly. Become a fan of our facebook page and share your fitness experience to others.
