Factors Affecting a Mans Sexual Health

June 19th, 2010  |  Published in Men's Health

There are different factors that may affect a mans sexual health and with some of these conditions, there are solutions to these problems. The three major factors that most likely affect a mans sexual health especially when it comes to erectile dysfunction problems are obesity, alcohol and smoking.

Obesity is definitely is definitely one situation that may hinder a man from performing properly when it comes to having sex with a woman. Yes an obese man may just as well be interested in having sex just as much as the next guy, but they are not as able to perform due to their obesity.

To rectify a mans obesity problem and to rid oneself of erectile dysfunction problems the answer is to diet properly and as well to exercise properly. For those men that are obese and want too improve and better their sex life, they have to be pro active and that means to take their obesity problem seriously and to eat properly and as well to exercise on a regular basis.

Smoking is another major concern when it comes to a mans sexual health especially erectile dysfunction. For those men who do smoke it has been found from studies that men who smoke more than 20 cigarettes per day had a 60% higher risk level of erectile dysfunction compared to those men who have never smoked. As well studies have shown that up to 30% of men who currently or formerly smoked were more likely to suffer from impotence.

For those men who do smoke they are as well at risk of getting lung cancer and as well as asthma, which both situations may lead to an early death. The best solution is to quit smoking which will not only enable a man to perform sexually and to rid themselves of erectile dysfunction problems but will as well make a situation better with their partner in life.

Alcohol consumption by any man is understandable but excessive drinking of alcohol is another factor that will affect a mans sexual health as well as creates erectile dysfunction problems. The major concern with excessive alcohol consumption is that alcohol dilates (widens) the blood vessels and if a man manages to get an erection, the alcohol keeps the blood vessels to the penis open and a man is left hanging in limpland.

If a man wants to improve their sexual health and improve their erectile dysfunction problems, then it is in the best interest not to drink alcohol prior to having sex. As well as those men that drink excessively to the point of being alcoholics the best remedy is to quit drinking totally and joining Alcoholics Anonymous to help to solve and alleviate a mans drinking problems.

In the end every man who has a problem with obesity, alcohol or smoking may enjoy better sexual health and alleviate problems with erectile dysfunction. The choice really is the mans choice and to do that they must take responsibility to making those changes and that is by discipline and taking action to make those changes.

Not Just for Kids — the Surprising Health Issues of Midlife Women

June 10th, 2010  |  Published in Sexual Health

One of the advantages of reaching midlife is that we are finally finished with all those issues that make childhood and adolescence such a pain in the neck, such as needing set bedtimes as well as  regular dental and eye checkups; having to worry about using protection during sex and about cigarette smoking; getting all those shots to prevent diseases and wearing helmets to prevent sports injuries; needing to eat all our vegetables and avoid sugar as well as not missing gym class. What a relief to let these issues fade right along with our memories of tetherball on the school playground!

Not so fast. Would it surprise you to know that you still have to be aware of each and every one of the above so-called “child/adolescent” health issues?

For instance, what about set bedtimes? The obvious reason that we needed enforced, regular  bedtimes each night was so that we would get enough sleep. Being tired and sleepy the next day in school caused everything from lousy concentration to crabby moods. Now that we’re in midlife, many of us believe that sleep is no longer an issue. This is not the case at all. It’s still essential to our health and wellbeing. Recent studies have shown that not only do sleep disturbances often indicate a serious health problem, but that lack of sleep can actually cause health problems, such as weight gain. Polls have shown that nearly two thirds of adults over the age of sixty-five have sleep complaints, but that less than 15 per cent of them have been formally diagnosed with a sleep problem. Why? Because we don’t mention sleep problems to our health care providers. Our mothers were right — we still need to be concerned about our bedtimes.

Once we’ve gotten the glasses we need and all our baby teeth are gone, we no longer need to get regular eye and dental checkups as we did in our younger years, right? Again — no. Although our vision does remain stable from young adulthood until we need bifocals, there are common eye diseases that begin to occur in midlife, and that can lead to blindness if not diagnosed.  And even though we no longer have our baby teeth,  other dental issues take the forefront upon reaching midlife, such as gum inflammation which has been shown to be associated with diabetes and heart disease. So, continued regular dental and eye checks are as important as in our younger years.

And what about sex at midlife and beyond?  We’ve moved from groping and being groped in the backseat of the car to more sophisticated maneuvers in a comfortable bed, and finally, finally no longer have to worry about pregnancy. So we don’t need protection; or so many of us think. Although it’s true that once menopause arrives one can’t get pregnant (warning: make sure you have completed menopause before assuming this as diagnosing menopause can be tricky),  protection is still needed during sex because of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Yes, we can still get those, and in some cases are even more prone to becoming infected after menopause, even after a hysterectomy. And even though we’re past the childbearing years and our reproductive organs seem to have no further use, we still need regular pelvic exams and Pap smears. It is also important at that exam to discuss with our healthcare providers the need for testing for STIs; if there is a new partner or the worry that the current partner is not monogamous, this testing is a must.

STIs are not the only threat held over from our adolescent years; so is cigarette smoking. Many women in midlife think that there is no reason to stop smoking cigarettes at this age, since they wrongly assume that the damage is already done from all the prior years of smoking. This is not the case. No matter how many years one has smoked, stopping can prevent further damage to the heart, blood vessels, and lungs, and in some cases can reverse some of that damage.

Also relevant to the lungs is the fact that asthma can begin in midlife, where once it was thought to only begin in childhood.  The two major causes seem to be occupational exposure to substances that damage the lungs, and the recreational exposure to air pollution by adults who run predominantly outside. So, a new onset of shortness of breath at this age — even if it occurs only with exercise — does not necessarily mean heart disease; remember that we can develop asthma now.

Did you think you were finished with all those horrible shots you had to have in childhood and adolescence? Sorry, you’re not. There is a recommended immunization schedule for adults in midlife and beyond, just as there are for children. At certain ages over 50 and at certain intervals, you’ll need shots against the flu, certain types of pneumonia, tetanus, and in some instances, shingles and hepatitis.  Ask your primary care provider about these.

And did you pack away your helmet when you gave away your bike with training wheels? Probably ok to have done this since now you will need a bigger size helmet. But you do need a helmet. A recent report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that sports-related injuries in the Baby Boomer population was on the rise, with over 1 million injuries in this age group in 1998 alone, most of the injuries being due to bicycling and basketball.  The same report said that the many head injuries associated with bicycling were probably due to the fact that Baby Boomers use helmets less than younger people do.

The fact that exercise and proper nutrition are as important in midlife and beyond as in childhood may not come as a surprise. Regular exercise at this age has been shown to increase longevity and wellbeing, postpone and possibly prevent dementia, strokes, heart disease, and diabetes, and aid in the treatment of depression. Important to know as well is that several different types of regular exercise are recommended at this age, including aerobic (cardio) exercise, weight-bearing exercise or strength training, and exercises to improve balance and flexibility.

What we eat as we get older is every bit as important as it was in our younger years. One particular healthy way of eating, the Mediterranean diet, has been shown to stave off dementia, prevent heart disease and diabetes, maintain a healthy cholesterol level, and improve longevity. One study showed that this diet even improved sexual function in certain women! This diet is exactly as expected given its name: lots of natural whole foods, like vegetables, fruits, and nuts, lots of fish and olive oil, moderate amounts of wine, and limited amounts of foods containing refined sugar. Controlling the portions of the foods we eat is even more important at this age. Our metabolic rate decreases with age, making it easier to gain weight while eating the same amounts of food as in our younger years.

So, as you are rummaging through your mother’s attic looking at your old dolls, baseball bat and Ouija Board, and breathing a sigh of relief that you no longer have to worry about being picked for a baseball team or that your best friend copied your paper doll’s dress, don’t get lulled into complacency about your health. Although you once may have thought that taking care of yourself  health-wise would get easier as you get older, you know now that that’s not true. Make your appointments for regular checkups, get more than 5 hours of sleep a night, use protection when having sex, particularly with a new partner, stop smoking no matter how old you are, get the recommended immunizations, be careful and wear your helmet and seatbelts, and exercise regularly and eat well. Your mother’s recommendations from your childhood continue to apply!

December 31st, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

Ask anyone who smokes and they will undoubtedly tell you that the very first cigarette they smoked nearly made them sick to their stomach or actually did make them sick. It begs the question why anyone would continue to smoke cigarettes until it becomes a habit but the answer to that question is neither here nor there if you have been smoking for long enough to be hooked to cigarettes. The bottom line is that if you are smoking and unhappy with the habit for any reason, it’s time to explore some options that will help you quit.

Any habit that has been practiced for 21 days is said to be a permanent one. So whether you are a relatively new smoker or you’ve been at it most of your life, there is damage being done to your lungs with each puff that you take. Smoking Cigarettes Killed Me

November 26th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

In November 2007, I suffered a massive heart attack, also known as congestive heart failure. Google the term congestive heart failure so you can go ahead and know ahead of time what smoking can really do to you. Here’s what you really don’t realize when your smoking. Yea everyday, everybody tells you it’s bad for you, and you hear all the warnings that never stick. Just like me, all the warnings go in one ear and out the other. Deep inside you know it’s not good for you, but at this stage you don’t realize just how bad it really is. You keep thinking one day I really need to quit, but right now is just not a good time to take quitting smoking on as a goal. I will really look at quitting after I get that next promotion, or once I get my company running better whatever, now’s just not the time.

You don’t find out until it’s too late that the price for either not quitting or researching alternatives is just way too high for any person to experience. I spent eleven days completely under. I was being kept alive with fifteen tubes running through my body. I have a son that at the time was eighteen years old, and he had doctors telling him for two days that his dad at best had a twenty percent chance of living. My son had to see me lying in a hospital bed white as a sheep, skin and bones, slowly dying. This was a terrible experience for him considering that he and I have always been close, and had a very good father son relationship. I swear, there are days I break into tears just knowing what I put my son through.

Well eleven days later, I managed to pull out of it, and stay alive, but the problems were just beginning. I spent an additional two weeks hooked up to a ton of machines, so weak I was not even able to walk, get out of the hospital bed, bathe, nothing. I was essentially lying in a hospital bed disabled.

The day the doctor finally agreed I was well enough to leave the hospital, I asked the doctor about how long he thought it would take me to be well enough to try to get back to work. I have worked my whole life, owned a small mortgage business, and really wanted to get back to things and feel somewhat normal. That’s when reality hit me. The doctor said there is no go back to work. You are one hundred percent disabled. You will never be able to work again. That’s when I realized, this was huge. This was permanent damage. This was bad. I fell apart right there on the spot, and broke into tears. I have always been an extremely active man. I had always been heavy into weight lifting and body building outdoors fishing, hunting, canoeing you name it I was into anything active. I had even developed myself as an extremely talented musician.

Well now it looked as though I had essentially survived to live a life that was at best half as productive and active as before. After a bad heart attack like that, you lose about half of your energy, you are faced with painfully debilitating chronic fatigue, and you are never the same. They sent me out of the hospital in a wheel chair, and gave me a walker to use to get around the house with when I got home. Welcome to a living prison brought on by some stupid crap cigarettes I never ever needed in the first place. I’m still young in my early forties. These should absolutely be the best times of my life. Instead of living up to my potential, enjoying all the activities to the fullest extent I have always pursued, I am like a four cylinder engine that runs on three cylinders most of the time, and some days maybe two. No one ever told me that smoking could lead to congestive heart failure, and leave me essentially disabled.

I have always been an extremely strong person, and somehow managed to work my way back to being somewhat functional. My doctor says my level of recovery is a miracle. But even as far as I have gotten over the last few years, I’m still very much disabled in many ways. Before the heart attack, I could go trout fishing up in the mountains all day, many days just the drive up there leaves me to warn out now to even get out in the trout stream. At best I am able to actually perform true work duties maybe a few hours a day.

The chronic Fatigue has left me so out of balance and lethargic that I can no longer perform as a musician. I stay so short of breath now that my days of singing are gone for good. There are many days that literally I wake up and just feel dead all day. It’s awful. God what I wouldn’t do to have my good health back. I’m just not the same.

Ok, that’s all the rambling on about how bad this experience was for me. Please if not for your own sake then do it for your friends and family. Stop Smoking or look into the safe smoking method. I know you don’t know me, and probably my little story as short and convincing as I tried to make it has perhaps bored the crap out of you. But please, take just a moment, and think of how quickly your life can change on a dime for the absolute worse.

I mean literally, I was up studying for my real estate state broker’s exam, and felt some pains in my chest that kept getting worse until a friend called an ambulance. By the time the ambulance got to me, I was having severe chest pains, and the last thing I remembered was being flown over the city of Atlanta in an ambulance helicopter to Piedmont Hospital. That’s how fast things can go from a great life to the worst nightmare life any one human being should ever have to endure.

Please, it’s not too late. You can turn it all around. Whatever it takes, you have to protect your heart. Losing your health is just not worth it. Even now, all the medicines I have to take every day without insurance costs over three hundred dollars a month. No one has any idea what I would give to be able to go back even a few years, take a few simple steps, and have my health back.

Conventional Cigarette manufacturers should be shut down, and their executives past and present should be thrown in jail for life. Their products have, and will continue to kill people thru lung cancer, and heart disease.

If you smoke, heed the warning, if you don’t smoke, or know someone that does, please share this with them. If reading this makes one person wake up and look at a safe smoking method then great. If it’s just one more of the many whispers in a smokers ear that eventually leads them to find a smoking alternative, good.

How To Quit Smoking Cigarettes

November 13th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

Many people smoke cigarettes or use tobacco products and do not even realize why. The nicotine in tobacco is a highly addictive drug, and many people cannot stay away from it, even if they try. This article is intended to help those who want to break free from their addiction to nicotine.

When a person smokes a cigarette, nicotine is drawn in with the smoke. It reaches the brain in three seconds. In thirty seconds, it causes the brain to start releasing stress reducing chemicals. These chemicals remain in the brain for a short time after the cigarette is finished. As they dissipate, the body starts to want another cigarette. And so the cycle continues. The danger comes not from the addictive nicotine itself, but from the byproducts of cigarette smoke, which includes lead and various other toxins that damage the throat, stomach lining, and lungs. I will help you learn how to quit smoking cigarettes.

The easiest way to release yourself from the necessity of cigarettes is to obtain your nicotine from other products. Nicotine gum is the easiest and most common product on the market to help smokers kick the habit. When it is chewed, it releases nicotine, which then proceeds to take the place of nicotine from cigarettes. Apart from gum, there are also other nicotine products meant to help. The nicotine patch is another one that used to be common, but is now used less and less because of health risks and side effects discovered in recent years. Injections are also used, and deliver nicotine to the bloodstream quickly. Nicotine products do not have a very high rate of success because of two reasons. First, the nicotine released by the products is usually not as strong and takes longer to get to the brain than the nicotine released from cigarettes. Also, nicotine products have to be weaned off to ever fully get over it’s effects. The products do not do this, leaving that part up to the user.

When you want to give up nicotine completely, it helps to replace it with a healthier product. Usually people replace the nicotine with sugar. However, the sugar has unwanted side effects, such as hyperactivity and gradual weight gain. A person also becomes in danger of becoming dependent on the sugar, which can lead to obesity and other health problems.

Sugar isn’t the only natural replacement. Some people replace the nicotine cravings with certain chemicals found in carrots. However, after consuming a large amount of carrots, their chemicals may cause a person’s skin to take on an orange tint.

Smokeless tobacco is not a viable option for replacing cigarettes, as they have a whole new set of health problems, including lip and mouth cancer.

No one can really tell a person how to quit smoking cigarettes. They have to figure out what works best for them. Perhaps their path lies in nicotine replacement.
