Panic Attack Gene Research…Marching Ahead

Prevention is better than cure. So we would always to prevent the disease rather than looking for its cure. But if we already have a disease, then we should look for the cure as soon as possible. the reason behind the panic attacks is found to be a genetic mutation and troubles 400 million people in the US alone. Although in a nebulous stage, still a breakthrough can be achieved for cure for panic disorders.

Earlier when there were completely no scope of curing a panic disorder, it was estimated that one in ten people is an anxiety disorder patient. This discovery was made by a team from the Center of Medical and Molecular Biology in Barcelona and was reported in the New Scientist Magazine.

The research saw the scientists studying the families with a history of panic disorders, agoraphobia and social phobia. The results indicated that 90% of the affected family members carried a genetic abnormality whereas the same mutation named the DUP25 was found to be present in most of the unrelated cases that have been tested. This gene mutation however was rare or was not found in those who had no anxiety problems whatsoever.

In Barcelona, the mutation occurs contains more than 60 genes, or which only 23 have so far been identified. Scientists however do know that some of these genes manufacture proteins that play a crucial role in controlling the way the cells of the nervous system communicate with each other. One theory highlighted by this group of scientists is that the gene mutation causes an imbalance in the production of these proteins resulting in the brain reacting over-sensitively to stressful situations.

An interesting fact that the scientists have come up with shows that not all people with DUP25 mutation suffer from anxiety disorders. The DUP25 mutation tends to change from generation to generation. According to Dr Monica Gratacos, a researcher said: “The environment is also very important. Those who experienced a relative with panic disorders were more prone to develop the similar disorder than the population at large he said. People with a family history, or with some of the relatives suffering from panic disorders, are likely to be affected from this disease. It is estimated that between half and three-fourth of the people who wanted to be treated for panic attacks, did not have any parental history of the same. Also, 8% of the panic attacks are caused by the misuse of drugs and stressful lifestyle.

According to Professor Baker, this is not a simple matter and that it is probably a balance of different factors that cause anxiety attacks. “It may well be that some people have a general susceptibility to panic attacks, but they would probably need some sort of stressful event to set it off.” A combination of anxiety disorder help and anti depressants, relaxation techniques and self help methods have proved to be beneficial in the treatment of panic attack disorders.

Health insurance causes mixed feelings in the majority of Americans. While it can literally save a life during serious injury or illness, it can also be a source of extreme stress and frustration when certain treatments aren’t covered or co-payments are unaffordable. Other ideas that have been proposed include a tax increase for wealthy Americans and higher premiums for seniors making more than $170,000 each year who participate in Medicare. Many seniors have expressed concern that the attempts to reduce Medicare spending could result in decreased benefits, changes in doctors, or certain treatments being denied. While the White House hopes to reach its goal of eliminating wasteful spending without resorting to such measures, critics question how millions of baby boomers coming into the program over the next few years can be covered at the current level of benefits while reducing spending at the same time. Another closely watched aspect of the new plan is the proposed public health care option. While lawmakers tout the public option as a way to encourage insurance companies to offer lower and more competitive prices while making sure consumers can obtain affordable health care, critics argue that a government funded system would put many private insurers out of business altogether. An alternative idea suggests state specific health care co-ops which would receive initial government funding, but would thereafter need to be self-supporting. As Americans watch to see where the chips will fall in the health care debate, they should also begin taking action now to find more affordable health care coverage. Employer based systems often provide good coverage at a reasonable cost for individuals, but those without coverage through their place of work should look at various options such as individual coverage, family coverage, and health savings accounts to determine which plan will best meet their needs. Once a plan has been chosen, shopping around is the best way to get the most affordable coverage with the most benefits. Congress hopes to lessen the burden of health care costs for everyone across the board, but individuals can’t wait for the government to solve their health care problems if they hope to see improvement in the near future. As debate proceeds in Washington, Americans should take ownership of their insurance needs by frequently shopping around for the best coverage in order to make sure their families are adequately provided for in the event of illness or injury.

Better Sex: Body And Mind Tips

The benefits of better physical conditioning are presented daily in the media. The social norms for body image are influenced everyday by what we read and view, either on T.V. or the internet. Yes, primary motivators to better conditioning are improved health, decreased healthcare costs, increased energy, and heightened self image. Perhaps the number one reason to get in better shape is found in the bedroom.


Here then are mind and body tips that can lead to better sex:


Eat Differently


Notice this does not say “loose weight” or “go on a low carb diet”. It says Eat Differently. This means two things. One is portion control and two is meal frequency.


Portion Control

Simply put most of us eat too much. That, in part, is a function of how much we are served either at home or while eating out. Many of us grew up with parental instructions to be members of the “clean plate club”. What we did not know was that eating everything on our plates, given the portions that we are served, is making us fat! Eating to a holiday meal coma state (think Thanksgiving) is not healthy and will put on weight. Conversely eating until you are satisfied and then putting the fork down will yield dramatically different results. It’s not about banishing all the food you enjoy from your diet. It is about learning to moderate the amount of food you eat. This leads to the next point.


Meal Frequency

So if you are eating less at these meals won’t you get hungry? Yes you will. This means you will need to eat. Experts in diet and nutrition suggest eating 5-6 times per day. The pattern would be:


Breakfast

Mid-morning snack

Lunch

Mid-afternoon snack

Dinner

Post dinner snack/dessert


When combined with the Portion Control rule you will train your body to eat less at one sitting, your body will expect smaller increments of food more frequently, and the end result will be weight loss. This statement assumes that your 5-6 meals are not comprised of cheeseburgers, french fries, and chocolate shakes! Eating more fruits and vegetables and following a low-fat diet is a great start. The Eat Differently suggestion still incorporates sound dietary principles such as limiting the amount of fat, carbs, sugar, salt, etc.


What is the net effect on sex? Simple really. Eat better, loose weight. Less weight stimulates the sex hormones.


Workout For The Pelvic Region


Activity that sends increased flow blood to the large muscle groups gives the genitals better circulation. This means working the thighs, buttocks, and pelvis. The exercises that can accomplish this are as simple as a brisk walk (20 minutes per week), yoga, cycling, Pilates, and jogging. The result of this increased circulation is better arousal, and better orgasmic function. As always you should consult you doctor before engaging in any exercise regimen. The primary byproduct of this exercise will be a return of sexual desire.


Reduce Stress


One of the best ways to kill sex is being over stressed. How can you perform when the demands of the job and family are creating havoc on the brain? Three great stress reducers:


Breathing: yes breathing. Deep, relaxing, purposeful breathing. It oxygenates the blood and wakes up the brain.


Exercise: there’s that word again. Singularly one of the best stress reducers there is.


Music: when dealing with stress, the right music can actually lower your blood pressure, relax your body and calm your mind.


Stop Buying What The Media Is Selling


Paris, Angelina, Nichole. What do they weigh? How much should they weigh? What do they eat? These are the headlines of the mass media everyday. They have the potential to pollute the mind into believing that the body image of the “stars” should be our body image. True sexuality is found when you and your partner allow yourselves to abandon the stereotypes. If either partner is worrying about a bulging this or a sagging that how can sexual intensity be realized? Condition your mind to accept your body as it is. Body image can be more destructive to sex than many other factors.

Breast Change and Breast Cancer: a Women?s Health Issue

There is a wide incidence of women in the Western world who experience breast changes that are a direct consequence of their menstrual cycle and it is believed that as high as 70 percent of women are so afflicted. These women may find their breasts have become very uncomfortable due to their becoming tender, swollen or lumpy. Women are naturally the caregivers. This happens to a woman by instinct, and this role usually allows them to slip into personal neglect. It so happens that women are the stronger of the two sexes when it comes to health and capacity of bearing pain both mentally and physically. It is a matter of debate whether this is the reason why they ignore their own health in the process or not.

The lives of many women have been lost for mere negligence. Hence, it is advisable to have a full-check up every two-three years once you are in the 30-40s. Some diseases are totally silent, and unless they are caught and cured in the earliest stages, these are the ones who can prove fatal.

When you think of heart disease, you probably think of a risk of death for men. However, since 1984 more women have died from cardiovascular disease than men.
