How to Avoid Muscle Soreness

The day or two after a workout, you will almost certainly feel some muscle soreness.  This dull ache and pain is natural, and isn’t something you should be worried about.  However, just because you shouldn’t worry about it, doesn’t mean you ought to just put up with it.  Nobody needs to feel uncomfortable after a workout.  There are two surefire ways to avoid muscle soreness: stretching and providing your body with protein.  Best of all, both of these are natural, not chemical.  

In order to understand how to avoid the aches and pains of muscle soreness, it’s important to understand where it comes from.  Many people think that muscle soreness is the result of lactic acid buildup around the muscles.  However, recent research has shown that this isn’t actually true.  Your muscles do produce lactic acid during strenuous activity; but that lactic acid typically drains and dissolves within thirty minutes to one hour after ceasing the workout and activity.  So what causes the soreness if it isn’t lactic acid?  Most experts agree that during strenuous activity your muscles become damaged.  One way is that your muscles can get inflamed and swollen because of the increased blood flow during strenuous activity, thereby exciting the pain receptors nearby.  Another way is that muscle fibers are torn and damaged when the muscle is doing the work.  This tear and inflammation is what causes most of the muscle ache that people feel after their workouts.  And it is something that you can prevent.  

While many people deal with the ache and pain of muscle soreness using chemical anti-inflammatory drugs like acetaminophen, aspirin or ibuprofen.  These drugs can help reduce pain caused by inflammation and swelling, but they don’t do anything to strengthen muscles or repair the damage muscle tissue.  Instead of resorting to a chemical “band-aid” fix; stretching and proper nutrition can deal with the problem head on.

The importance of stretching to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is immense.  Most importantly, stretching does three things that help deal with muscle ache.  First, stretching increases joint flexibility and range of motion; this helps avoid wear and tear on ligaments and tendons in joints.  Second, stretching is a great way to reduce muscle tension.  Flexible and elastic muscles aren’t as easily torn or damaged as stiff and static muscle.  The most important benefit of stretching is that it increases circulation (blood flow) which helps increase energy output on the muscles.  Stretching before exercising will help maximize the exercise by warming up muscle groups and moving the blood to make sure muscles are well oxygenated.  Post-exercise stretching helps to remove the lactic acid buildup, and also to maintain healthy blood flow to the muscle groups.  This blood flow is how the body delivers amino acids to the damaged muscle tissue; amino acids are what repair the damage.

Shoulder Impingement Exercises That That Helped to Fix My Shoulder

Shoulder impingement exercises are probably the last thing on your mind when you have a shoulder impingement. Any type ofmovement is painful so why would you subject yourself to further pain.

A shoulder impingement is a debilitating condition. I know because I tore my rotator cuff towards the end of last year and ended up with an impinged shoulder as a result of it. My supraspinatus tendon had become swollen and was getting impinged or pinched each time that I tried lifting my left arm.

The pain was unbearable. At one point I was maxed out on pain killers and carrying a TENS machine around wired up to my shoulder to reduce the pain.

Just in case you do not know what a shoulder impingement is. The supraspinatus is one of the rotator cuff muscles. The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that surround the shoulder helping to move and stabilise it. together they hold the head of the humerus in place in the socket of the shoulder joint.They all attach to the shoulder blade at one end and the humerus at the other.

They are comparatively small muscles but very important to a healthy shoulder joint. Unfortunately they are also easily injured especially for anyone who uses their shoulders a lot at work or in a sport. Painters who are working above head height are prone to rotator cuff problems as is anyone who throws a ball in sport.

The last group that are vulnerable are the over forties. That is where I fit in!

A rotator cuff injury is a vicious circle. Once the tendon gets inflamed it can get pinched within a channel of bone that it runs through. Because it gets pinched it gets more inflamed, gets pinched more, gets more inflamed….see where I am going?

Untreated the end result is that you could end up snapping the tendon altogether leaving you with a very bad shoulder injury.

Anyway, after several months of pain, I was on a short list for surgery, but having already suffered several months of discomfort, I was reluctant to wait any longer so started researching shoulder impingement treatment on the internet.

I discovered that exercise is the secret to recovery. Not lifting weights but simple exercises aimed at rehabilitating the rotator cuff.

It is important to start off with proper rest. That meant completely avoiding any type ofmovement that causes you pain. The pain tells you that you are damaging the muscle more. This meant some fairly radical changes to my daily routine including giving up driving for a few weeks.

At the same time treat the inflammation. I maxed out on anti inflammatory drugs and used ice packs to bring down the inflammation in the tendon.

As things started to ease up I started some Pilates based exercises to gently stretch the muscles and stabilise the joint, gradually moving on to strengthening exercises. By starting slowly and building up gradually over a few weeks I was able to avoid any pain or further damage to my rotator cuff.

My shoulder got back to normal, pain free and fully mobile without resorting to the surgery!

What do I put this down to?

I believe that the over forties are susceptible to this injury because we change shape as we age. Our posture changes, we carry ourselves differently, sit badly and change the way in which we use some of our joints. We can get a bit lazy even. Our movements are not as fluid as when we were in our twenties and thirties. All this has an impact on the body and leads to problems.

Doing the right sort of exercise gets things working again, sorts out our posture and gets rid of some of the problems that have crept in over time.

This is no revelation. All of us know that we need to exercise to stay young. Sometimes it takes something like a shoulder injury to remind us how important it is.

How to Fix a Pair of Eyeglasses?

Most people with eyeglasses will at some point have an incident that causes some form damage to their eyeglasses. Fortunately, one does not have to rush to the eyeglass store to get them fixed. By using an eyeglass repair kit, you can often do the repair yourself.

The following is a guide to fixing a pair of eyeglasses:

Purchase a quality eyeglass repair kit. You can purchase these kits online, or at any eyeglasses store or department store. Examine the eyeglasses to see where it is damaged.

I. A Screw Loose or Missing

If the screw is loose, remove it. Get a new screw from your repair kit. Insert where a screw is missing with a new screw. When putting in a new screw, tighten the screw and stop when you feel it tough to turn

II. Missing or Damaged Nose Supports

Remove the screw that holds the current nose pad. Get a nose pad from your repair kit or get the specific one that matches your eyeglasses from an eyeglass store. Insert the new nose pad by lining up the new nose pad with the bracket. Begin to replace the screw by tightening it. Stop when you have to force it to turn.

III. Screw in the Lens Frame Missing or Worn

Remove the current screw that connects the ear piece to the frame of the eyeglass. Use the screwdriver to insert a new screw. Tighten the screw but stop when you have to force it.

IV. Hinge Damaged

Use the little pliers from the eyeglass repair kit to carefully bend the hinge back in place.

When repairing eyeglasses there are number of measures one should take to avoid further damage, and include:

1. Apply a bit of clear nail polish on the hinge once screws are inserted. Make sure it is dry before wearing your eyeglasses. This helps keep the screw in place.

2. If the metal hinge has broken off the frame, apply strong glue using a toothpick. Hold the hinge in place until it adheres to the frame.

3. If the earpiece slides off the frame, glue it back on the frame.

4. Make sure the eyeglass repair kit you buy has all the necessary repair items.

5. When doing a repair, work under a bright light and use a brightly colored towel to set your equipment. A bright one color towel such as pink or white will ensure that if you drop any item such as a very small screw, you will find it.

6. When repairing eyeglasses, you will likely get smudges from your fingers all over the lenses and frame. Use a quality eye glass cleaner and an eyeglass cleaning cloth to wipe away any smudges and dirt.
