Baby in Hospital

December 13th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

Baby sickness – is always a hard trial for family, and if the matter concerns baby’s hospitalization, then you can become panic-stricken only at the thought of the fact that a baby will be estranged from his family, painful procedures expect him, and strangers will surround him.

Because of hospitalization, a baby can get the whole complex of serious psychological problems, caused by sickness, isolation from home and conditions of hospital. Even adult person experiences stress, when he needs to apply to a doctor and moreover, while necessity of long staying in hospital. Needless to say about baby’s stress! Strange atmosphere, strange people, new, constantly renewed children collective, forced separation from parents, fear of medical procedures – all this is quite enough for psychological discomfort. And all these factors accompany symptoms of disease.

However, you shouldn’t dramatize situation. Of course, disease and necessity of hospitalization – are traumatizing factors.  But for majority of children staying at hospital can become an important stage in formation of personality, bring lots of new impressions and knowledge, and give possibility to try themselves in difficult life circumstances. This experience will be useful in further life of a child.

Processes of adaptation are individual for each child. This depends on many reasons: whether he had diseases earlier, stage of disease, is he staying at hospital for the first time or not, baby’s age, whether he was separated from his family before etc. Often everything passes quite smoothly, due to presence of inner reserves of a baby and correct behavior of parents.

It’s quite normal, if period of adaptation at hospital lasts during 3-5 days. There’re no reasons for anxiety, if a baby is rather careless during first days of hospitalization, asks to take him home, gets into contact with coevals not at once. Excess care and parental inclination for dramatizing situation can only damage. On the other hand, you shouldn’t leave a baby alone with his problems. He shouldn’t feel abandoned and lonely.

Quite often parents of sick children need more psychological help, then children themselves, as it is their correct behavior that influences a baby’s mood for recovery.

Here’re several recommendations of experts. Never frighten your baby with hospital. Don’t create future problems, as there’s hardly any baby, who hasn’t been at hospital for his life. During conversations with other people avoid such phrases, like: “There doctors hardly understand something, I wish only they don’t harm my child” etc.

In case of baby hospitalization do your best to reduce stress and melancholy because of coming separation from home and parents. Adults themselves should be confident in future, calm and wise, so that a baby would treat staying at hospital calmly. If hospitalization is planned and you have at least 1-2 days for preparation, involve baby in preparations, as if he would be going to health centre or camp.

Try to dispose your baby to optimism. Children have great intuition, and it’s almost impossible to persuade them in things, which you don’t believe yourself in. So, first of all you should analyze your own emotions and forget about affirmation: “Hospital – pain, fear, danger”. Replace it by “Hospital – help, relieve, recovery”. You confidence and peace of mind will be passed to your daughter and son. Talk to your child about coming hospitalization softly-softly. You can explain to schoolchild, that sickness is not a catastrophe, but a peculiar exam for courage and firmness. Tell your child that you will be thinking of him constantly and you’re always ready to help him. Think and discuss ways of your contacts.

During separation avoid touching scenes, restrain excessive emotions. Try to behave the way, so that a baby would treat hospital not as punishment, but as a place, where he will be helped to recover sooner and return to usual life. Form positive attitude, both to improvement of health and doctors’ work. Explain your child an objective necessity of medical assistance.

Don’t persuade him that he is guilty of his sickness, trauma etc. himself. By doing this, you will increase sense of guilt and fear, which can cause undesirable psychological complications. Of course, there’re situations, when it is important to discuss wrong behavior of a child, which caused disease.  But it is also very important that a result of your conversation would be not a sense of guilt, but understanding of cause and effect connection between wring behavior and disease.

Discuss schedule of visiting a child with relatives for sure, to avoid situations, when there’re several visits per one day and no visits at all other day. This is very important, as excess of visitors can lead to emotional overloads of a sick baby, and their absence – to increase of longing for home and relatives.

Try not to hung up on topic of disease and treatment. Life goes on. Ask your child about his new friends, news, what he does in spare time. Keep all your doubts concerning effectiveness of treatment inside of you. Don’t overload patient with your doubts and fears. As medicine, which you doubt, will not help, as doctor, whom you don’t trust, won’t be able to help. Try to avoid unpleasant topics, wait a little with information about bad news: sick baby need not to know that his favorite doggie eats bad or that cat ate hamster. While talking to a baby, pay attention to positive moments of staying at hospital. Think about things you can compliment him for: he bears procedures with fortitude, doesn’t play about, could make friends with somebody, drew a good picture etc.

Unfilled spare time increases feeling of loneliness, longing for home. So you should definitely worry about things your child should do. Bring him an interesting book, meccano, some new game, paints, crayons etc. Bring a toy for a small baby surely. You can tell that a new “friend” came to him specially to protect him at nights (if a baby is predisposed to night fears). It will be very good, if you bring him a toy bear, elephant, lion, tiger, i.e. any big animal, which will be able to personify power and protection (size of toy is not important).

After discharge talk to your baby about time he spent at hospital. Ask him about things he learned to do, what he understood about himself and his relations with other people, help him to realize value of experience he gained.

How to Avoid Muscle Soreness

December 12th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

The day or two after a workout, you will almost certainly feel some muscle soreness.  This dull ache and pain is natural, and isn’t something you should be worried about.  However, just because you shouldn’t worry about it, doesn’t mean you ought to just put up with it.  Nobody needs to feel uncomfortable after a workout.  There are two surefire ways to avoid muscle soreness: stretching and providing your body with protein.  Best of all, both of these are natural, not chemical.

In order to understand how to avoid the aches and pains of muscle soreness, it’s important to understand where it comes from.  Many people think that muscle soreness is the result of lactic acid buildup around the muscles.  However, recent research has shown that this isn’t actually true.  Your muscles do produce lactic acid during strenuous activity; but that lactic acid typically drains and dissolves within thirty minutes to one hour after ceasing the workout and activity.  So what causes the soreness if it isn’t lactic acid?  Most experts agree that during strenuous activity your muscles become damaged.  One way is that your muscles can get inflamed and swollen because of the increased blood flow during strenuous activity, thereby exciting the pain receptors nearby.  Another way is that muscle fibers are torn and damaged when the muscle is doing the work.  This tear and inflammation is what causes most of the muscle ache that people feel after their workouts.  And it is something that you can prevent.

While many people deal with the ache and pain of muscle soreness using chemical anti-inflammatory drugs like acetaminophen, aspirin or ibuprofen.  These drugs can help reduce pain caused by inflammation and swelling, but they don’t do anything to strengthen muscles or repair the damage muscle tissue.  Instead of resorting to a chemical “band-aid” fix; stretching and proper nutrition can deal with the problem head on.

The importance of stretching to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is immense.  Most importantly, stretching does three things that help deal with muscle ache.  First, stretching increases joint flexibility and range of motion; this helps avoid wear and tear on ligaments and tendons in joints.  Second, stretching is a great way to reduce muscle tension.  Flexible and elastic muscles aren’t as easily torn or damaged as stiff and static muscle.  The most important benefit of stretching is that it increases circulation (blood flow) which helps increase energy output on the muscles.  Stretching before exercising will help maximize the exercise by warming up muscle groups and moving the blood to make sure muscles are well oxygenated.  Post-exercise stretching helps to remove the lactic acid buildup, and also to maintain healthy blood flow to the muscle groups.  This blood flow is how the body delivers amino acids to the damaged muscle tissue; amino acids are what repair the damage.

The best way to get amino acids into the body is through protein in your diet and the easiest way to get protein after a workout is through a whey protein shake.  Whey protein shakes have two benefits: they are whey-based, and they are shakes.  Whey protein is easily digestible and soft on the body compared to other supplemental protein sources.  And getting protein in the form of a shake provides the added benefit of hydrating a sore body, which helps flush out impurities and promotes healing.  Good stretching and whey protein can make muscle ache disappear: reducing the need for chemical pain relievers and helping you get back in the gym.

Are bites and stings dangerous?

December 12th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

Animal and insect bites and stings are relatively common minor injuries. Usually, they will heal on their own and will not cause serious or permanent damage, but they can be serious and it is important to know appropriate first aid measures.

What are the possible complications of bites and stings?

Many animal bites result in puncture wounds – deep wounds that penetrate the tissue underneath the skin and cause internal damage. The germs from the animal’s mouth can then be carried deep into the wound and may cause serious infections.

The adder is the only poisonous snake in the UK, and although the venom can be fatal, the number of recorded deaths is very small indeed.

There is one serious complication of insect stings. A small percentage of people can develop a life- threatening allergic reaction called anaphylactic shock, where airways become swollen and reduce the air getting to the lungs. The symptoms of anaphylactic shock are red, blotchy skin with raised areas, swelling of the face and neck, puffiness around the eyes, wheezing and difficulty breathing, rapid pulse and loss of consciousness. Anaphylactic shock is a very serious condition and requires immediate hospital treatment.

What should I do if someone has been bitten or stung?

First, assess the seriousness of the bite or sting.

Serious bites and stings

If the bite is large and/or bleeding heavily, take the person to the nearest GP or hospital, or call 999 for an ambulance

If the person has been stung in the mouth, give them ice to suck on and phone 999 for an ambulance

If you suspect the person is going into anaphylactic shock, call for an ambulance immediately. Check the person’s ABC (see box bellow) and if necessary (and you are trained to do so), perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation

You should be aware that coming into contact with blood and body fluids may expose you to infections such as hepatitis B and C, and HIV. If the bite is bleeding, do not touch it with your bare hands. Ideally, put on a pair of disposable, preferably sterile gloves: if you do not have a first aid box to hand or you do not have disposable gloves, use another type of barrier, such as a thickly folded dish towel or clean handkerchief, and wash you hands thoroughly before and after touching the person.

Minor animal bites

Wash the wound with warm water and soap, if possible

Pat the wound dry, and cover it with a plaster or small dressing, or any piece of clean, non-textured cloth that you have to hand

If the person has been bitten by an animal, check with its owners about current immunisations. The person who has been bitten should see their doctor about a tetanus immunisation. Afterwards, keep an eye on the wound for signs of infection (redness, swelling and heat concentrated at the site of the wound).

If the person has been bitten by a snake, keep the wounded area below the level of the heart and do not allow the person to walk around, as this will spread the venom through the body. If you can, immobilise the injured area using strips of cloth and padding tied into a splint. Call an ambulance.

Minor insect bites and stings

Bites from insects such as mosquitoes, fleas or flies usually do not require medical attention. Even stings from bees, wasps or hornets, although painful and frightening, are not usually serious.

If the stinger it still there, remove it by scraping a credit card over the surface; do not try to remove it with tweezers – you may squeeze more venom out of the venom sac into the wound

Apply a cold compress (any clean cloth soaked in cold water will do) to reduce the pain and swelling

A paste of baking soda mixed with water can help to relieve the pain.

If the pain and swelling do not go away, or if it gets worse over the next day or two, the person should see a doctor

As mentioned above, if you suspect the person is having an allergic reaction to a sting (anaphylactic shock) you must phone for an ambulance immediately.

What can I do to prevent bites and stings?

There are several measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of being bitten or stung:

Do not approach wild animals, especially if they seem injured

Avoid strange cats and dogs

Do not wear strong perfume, which will attract bees and wasps

Use an insect repellent

Take care when eating and drinking: bees and wasps are attracted to sweet, sugary foods. Take particular care when drinking from cans of soft drink: always use a straw or pour the drink into a cup or glass

If you come across a wasp or bees’ nest, do not disturb it

Avoid dense forested areas in hot weather and in the height of summer.

Take a walking stick if you intend to walk through long grass or undergrowth: your stick will disturb a snake or other biting animal before you do

Wear protective clothing: long socks and long-sleeved garments will provide protection from bites and stings

Boost Your Health With Prickly Ash

December 2nd, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

The prickly ash plant is a tall shrub that is often described as a small tree. It can usually be found growing up to a height of twenty feet. The shrub can be distinguished by its barbed stalks and branches. The leaves of this plant are covered with fine hair-like material when they are young. As the leaves mature, they become smooth and develop spots of resins on the outer surface. When crushed, the leaves give out a fragrance that is similar to that of the lemon. The shrub is responsible for bearing green colored flowers. These appear in bunches on old wood before the leaves. Reddish-brown casings can be found on the wood, which house black seeds that are spicy to taste. The prickly ash shrub can be found in the region that ranges from Canada to Virginia and Nebraska.

The Native American tribes used prickly ash for toothaches and infection. Subsequently, it appeared in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia from 1829 to 1926. It was also found in the National Formulary from 1916 to 1947 as a treatment for rheumatism. This herb was often used in the South during cholera and typhus epidemics. There, it was able to produce positive results. Prickly ash is often used in combination with a variety of other herbs.

Samuel Thomson, a nineteenth-century herbalist, considered prickly ash to be a valuable natural stimulant. It helps with problems such as rheumatism, cold hands and feet, ague, and fever. This herb is responsible for stimulating circulation, which is essential for a healthy body. Prickly ash can also help circulation that is impaired. This is the case in cold extremities and joints. Additionally, this herb can help with arthritis and lethargy because of its stimulant action and because it shows promise as way to enhance the immune system and relieve exhaustion.

Prickly ash can be used as a poultice to help speed up the healing of wounds and preventing infection. Also, it helps increase the production of saliva. This helps to eliminate mouth dryness. The bitter and sweet qualities of this herb are responsible for helping to heal deficiencies in the heart, lungs, spleen, and intestine. These qualities also help to strengthen them. As an example, prickly ash has been used to treat ulcers, asthma, and colic. Prickly ash is also used to aid digestion. Additionally, it helps in relieving feminine problems such as premenstrual cramps. This herb also is used to treat skin diseases.

The bark and berries of the prickly ash plant are used to provide alterative, anthelmintic, antiasthmatic, antispasmodic, astringent, blood purifier, sialagogue, and stimulant properties. Primarily, prickly ash is extremely beneficial in dealing with poor circulation, fevers, paralysis, mouth sores, ulcers, and wounds. Additionally, this herb is very helpful in treating ague, arthritis, asthma, blood impurities, cholera, colic, uterine cramps, diarrhea, edema, gas, gastric disorders, indigestion, lethargy, liver disorders, rheumatism, primary tuberculosis, skin diseases, syphilis, thyroid problems, and typhus.

In order to obtain the best results when supplementing with this, or any herb, it is important to consult your health care provider before beginning any regimen while on prescription medications. For more information on the many beneficial effects provided by prickly ash, please feel free to consult a representative from your local health food store with questions.

Leasing vs. Buying Medical Equipment

November 26th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

Leasing medical equipment is a growing popular alternative to purchasing devices outright. This is especially true among small clinics and new medical practices seeking to save on their general start up costs. Leasing is especially useful when you know that you will only be needing a medical device for a limited period of time. By renting medical equipment instead of buying it, you can stay financially afloat more easily and still manage to procure the best high-tech medical equipment for your patients. There are also possible tax benefits to renting equipment and a certain level of security in terms of protecting yourself from losing money as a result of a purchased device becoming technologically obsolete.

Keeping to your Budget
Not spending more than your budget allows is especially important for small medical practices that are just starting out and are looking to save as much as they can on set-up costs. Leasing medical equipment means you can do more with your budget, and the devices you rent can start generating revenue and paying for their own costs.

Tax Benefits
You can get a tax deduction for the payments you make on leased medical devices, since they can fall under the category of operational costs. You may be able to get a deduction on a medical device purchase, but depending on the difference between the purchase cost and the comparable size of the lease payments, not to mention your tax bracket, it might (or might not) make more sense to rent. Either way, it’s worth looking into and considering.

Protecting Against Obsolescence
Technology is constantly changing and advancing, especially when it comes to medical technology. A medical device, even a medical examination table, might find itself outdated very, very quickly and in need of replacement. In such a case leasing medical equipment can prove to be the better choice, whether or not you can afford to purchase or not. It’s never good for business when you have to replace a device  with a newer model before the old one gets a chance to pay for its original cost. With most medical equipment companies that lease out devices, you can arrange a payment plan that matches up the life-span of the device with its lease payments.

Advances in Scar Reduction Technology

November 22nd, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

Matthew Pruitt is the owner of NuVision, a boutique medical spa in Manhattan that offers a range of laser-based procedures including Lasik to BOTOX and skin rejuvenation. Here he explains which technologies have been proven to help with scar reduction.

When patients visit NuVision asking about scar reduction technologies, we find that the most common request of that nature is actually for stretch marks. And then the second most common would be for the treatment of acne. These are typically the folks who have tried over-the-counter creams meant to diminish the appearance of scars, and other types of things, and just have not gotten the kinds of results that they wanted. When they come to us, they are looking for a treatment that is going to be a little more advanced, from the aspect of technology, and a laser treatment that is actually going to deliver tangible results. Two types of treatments work well for scar reduction:

Affirm Laser Treatment

The Affirm laser that we use for acne treatments we also use successfully for the reduction of stretch marks on women and men. While there is no perfect solution to completely remove a stretch mark (because a stretch mark essentially is a scar), the reduction of the appearance is really dramatic with the help of the Affirm laser.

We found that this particular laser does exceptionally well with scars and stretch marks, with no downtime for patients. And in the kind of world that we live in, especially for those of us who live in New York City, we just don’t have the time for downtime because it’s a fast moving, busy place. With the Affirm treatment, patients come in, they undergo the procedure, and head right back to work that day.

When it comes to cost, Affirm treatments are going to range from $500 to $750 per treatment. That’s cheaper than many other options; however it usually takes two, three, or even four treatments before patients being seeing their desired results. Med spas like NuVision commonly offer package discounts, which can make the Affirm laser treatment a slightly more affordable option.

CO2 Laser Treatment

Another option for scar reduction is called the CO2 laser. It is a bit more invasive and a bit more abrasive than the Affirm, and it is also a lot more ablative.

Although the CO2 has been proven to work especially well, its invasiveness is seen as a negative for some on-the-go patients. And in general, the more ablative the technology is the longer the downtime. However, the results from a CO2 laser can be really outstanding, even though the downside is that it can take a week—or sometimes two weeks—to really heal and that depends on the skin tone you have.

Patients choosing the CO2 laser can expect to pay $1,000 to $2,000 for a treatment, depending on the type of laser you use and the doctor who is doing the procedure. Unlike with the Affirm, however, patients choosing the CO2 laser can achieve the results they are looking for in as little as one treatment, so the high cost is offset by that.

As of right now, the Affirm and the CO2 laser treatments are the procedures we are seeing the best results with in terms of scar reduction. That follows along with the clinical data that shows that these treatments have been proven to have the best outcomes for patients as well.

Treatments for Acne

November 21st, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

Matthew Pruitt is the owner of NuVision, a boutique medical spa with offices throughout New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut that offers a range of laser-based procedures including LASIK, BOTOX, skin rejuvenation. He has helped countless men and women suffering from acne, and in this article, he offers advice on many of the newest acne treatments available.

For years, people who had severe acne had only one option after they had unsuccessfully tried using over-the-counter creams, which was taking a medication such as Accutane, which is no longer available. Unfortunately, these medications were not always that healthy, and often had side effects throughout the whole body. What actually is creating the acne, however, is an overproduction of oil glands.  We treat this problem specifically at NuVision, using the latest technology available. This technology has truly changed the way acne is treated.

Isolaz

One of the newest technologies for treating acne is called Isolaz, which is deep pore therapy. Isolaz is an impulse light that actually shocks the production of a patient’s sebaceous glands so we can really attack the acne right at the source. Many patients who have tried even Accutane unsuccessfully have seen good results and good outcomes with the new Isolaz laser.

Isolaz is actually a technology that we embraced early on and that we have seen tremendous results with at NuVision. We have a lot of really happy clients because of Isolaz. And from that, we have had a huge referral base from young people who come in while they are just starting to have acne problems, along with adults who come in with onset adult acne. So the Isolaz laser therapy is really changing the way that acne is being treated.

Isolaz works in two different ways. It clears the pores and it emits a pulse of light. When Isolaz clears the pores, what it is doing is it’s using a vacuum to pull the tissue into the machine and stretch it out, a little bit, so that it can get deep penetration. While the treatment is actually being done, it’s really not uncomfortable for patients. We don’t have complaints about pain or discomfort like you do with CO2 lasers or things that require more resurfacing. So Isolaz really is a painless option for people.

Vi Peel

A brand new peel just came out—one of our colleagues in California, Dr. Kalil, is the physician who actually invented it—and it’s called a Vi Peel.

Glycolic peels are pretty superficial—they take away the surface layer of dead cells so that you can reveal a more dewy look on your face. But the Vi Peel is a medium peel so it is going to go deeper into the skin and take deeper layers out to reveal more youthful skin. This is a really good alternative for our patients who may have some superficial scaring in addition to their acne.

For the people who have superficial acne and superficial scaring, what we’ll do is go through a course of Isolaz treatments and then we’ll follow up with a few Vi Peel. We do this so that:
You get to the source of acne that’s causing the problem and stop it from happening.
You get to the old damaged skin and you peel it away so that you can reveal new, more youthful layers of skin that are smooth.

In addition to that, the Vi Peel also provides better tone for the patients.

Affirm Multiplex Laser

For patients who have a long history of acne, we start with the Isolaz, of course. But if they have a scarring issue, then we may also use a laser called the Affirm, which is a little more intense than something like the Isolaz. If you’ve ever had laser hair removal, it has that similar type of feeling, like a rubber band snapping.

What the Affirm laser does, is it actually motivates the production of collagen, and at the same time, it is actually shedding the scars for patients. After two or three treatments, patients see dramatic changes in their complexion. This is a laser that actually also works for stretch mark reduction and scar removal, as well. It’s a really impressive laser that we have had a lot of success with.

The Diary of an Anxiety Attack Patient

November 18th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

Anxity attacks are to be taken very seriously. These can harm a person as they range from mild attacks to very severe one. People who are worried, perfectionist, socially avoidant or who encountered some or the other form of child abuse are most likely to suffer from panic attacks. to some of them, it might be hereditary problem. A normal person can’t even imagine being trapped inside a box for an unspecified duration and no clear sign of exit. This is just an example, the problem is 10 times severe in case of a panic disorder.

Anxiety attacks conquer the mind and the thought process of the person and fill his senses with uncontrollable fear. He feels as if he is going to die. These attacks have a major negative impact on the minor glands and tend to alter the functions of the major organs as well. As the functions of heart, eyes, stomach etc are affected, these react to the attacks and either increase the impulse or completely hide it. This condition should be treated with anxiety attack medicine.

In America itself, 40 million people suffer from anxiety disorder while only 4 million were treated with treatments for anxiety disorders. And amongst those, only 400,000 have received a proper treatment. Many researches brings the fact to the surface that people generally end with high drug inclination and drug abuse. 65% of North Americans take the prescription on a daily basis and 43% go for mood altering prescription regularly.

These attacks can provoke people to commit suicide. Jade Goody, a contestant to a reality TV show admitted that she tried to commit suicide while in a treatment for depression. When Goody was close to the breaking point, she was admitted to Priory clinic for treatments for anxiety disorder. There she refused to take off her coat. as reported by the mirror.co.uk she said that It was the worst thing in the world. I sat on the bed and I did not take my coat off because I thought, ‘If I take this off it means I’ve got to stay here’. So I had it on the whole time. I was on suicide watch because that’s how bad I was. “I can’t speak for everybody – but I just think there are so many people out there who are hungry to live and want a life. I just think that it’s a very selfish thing to do.” The fact that anxiety disorders patients have encountered some or the other from of a child abuse comes true in this case. We found her saying “I don’t hate my mum for beating me. I understand that she was frustrated and took it out on me.”

Cognitive Behavior theory, s part of anxiety attack cure is a form of psychotherapy. This is based on the basic principle that abnormal thinking is a result of abnormal reaction and involves assessing the reason behind patient’s thinking. This therapy is inclined towards changing the abnormal behavior. Anxiety attack medicine such as benzodiazepine tablets help give the sufferer short term relief due to stress related anxieties.

These medications however shouldn’t be taken for prolonged periods as the patient might be at risk of addiction. Buspirone is another type of anxiety medication that can help relieve anxiety and this is commonly taken as it is not as addictive. Antidepressants are also taken to treat certain anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, OCD, social phobia, and anxiety associated with depression. Apart from medicine, counseling and relaxation techniques are also used in the treatment process for both short term and long term solutions.
