Should You Buy a Heart Rate Monitor?

January 23rd, 2012  |  Published in Sexual Health

There are many different approaches to exercising. Some people just leap out of bed in the morning, inspired and motivated to his the open road, and race off down the street without a thought as to where they’re going, how far they wish to run, and how this run fits into their long term exercise plan. Other people have figured out their VO2max and designed a workout schedule that figures in progressive overloading of their system along with keeping an exact count of calories eaten and any other measurable statistic. Where should you be, and how does a heart rate monitor fit into this sliding scale between complete spontaneity and planned madness? I think you should, as with most things, place yourself somewhere in the middle, and for that very reason alone a heart rate monitor can be of excellent use.

A heart rate monitor quite simply monitors the rate of your heart and provides you with feedback. Some simply tell you your beats/minute, while others track so much information you could keep a science lab busy for a year with each workout. Although not always 100% exact, they can provide you with an excellent sense of your health over a period of time as you track your gains and compare your progress to where you were when you started.

So what are the benefits of tracking your heart rate? The first is being able to gauge whether or not you are exerting yourself too much or too little. Say you’re out jogging: if your heart rate starts to spiral up, you will know that you need to slow down, whereas if it is consistently low you will know you’ve got more to give. It sounds deceptively simple, but given how many people injure themselves, burn out or get frustrated with workouts, that’s a huge deal.

Secondly, it can help you gauge if you are working out aerobically or anaerobically. If you are working out at over 85% of your maximum heart rate you are in the anaerobic zone, and your body will be unable to get enough oxygen to derive energy from fat and instead breaks down carbs. This is also where you generate lactic acid, and as a result many people seek to avoid entering this zone. However! The anaerobic has great fat burning potential in that your body will proceed after your exercise to break down fat for hours upon hours, and often exceeding the benefits of traditional aerobic exercise for a shorter duration of workout.

According to the American Medical Association you can figure out your Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) by deducting your age from 220. Of course you never want to get your heart rate up that high unless you’re a professional Olympic athlete, but from that figure you can generate a good idea of what is happening to your body when you hit certain thresholds. Traditionally, those different zones are:

Healthy Heart Zone (Warm Up) – 50-60% of MHR. Easiest zone for most people, and where you should be most comfortable.

Fitness Zone (Fat Burning) – 60-70% MHR. Provides the same benefits as the Healthy Heart Zone, but is more intense and burns more total calories.

Aerobic Zone (Endurance Training) – 70-80% MHR. This is the zone most people get into when working out for long periods of time like running or swimming. In this zone you will improve your cardiovascular and respiratory system and increase the size of your heart.

Anaerobic Zone (Performance Training) – 80-90% MHR. Here is where you improve your VO2 max, and thus rocket up your cardiorespiratory system, as well as develop a higher threshold for lactate acid.

Red Line (Max Effort) 90-100% MHR: Burns the most calories, but is the most intense. Most people can only stay here for very short periods of time.

Having a heart rate monitor can help you decide where you wish to be, and how you can acquire the gains you want given your goals. Is it a good move to get one, then? Sure! Especially if you are looking to maximize results and exercise at maximum efficiency.

Vitamin Diet for Body Builders

January 1st, 2012  |  Published in Sexual Health

As a rule, we take on several extra kilos during winter and we hasten to stick to a diet. Unfortunately, when we exclude harmful (from our point of view) food, we deprive ourselves of vitamins necessary for our health.

As the food industry evolved, more carbohydrates have been introduced into our daily diet, thus causing an imbalance in our metabolism to burn fat. The reason for our extra weight can also be attributed to the many grains and starches in our diet (pasta, rice, breads, and potatoes). The Zone Diet’s approach calls for a return to the diets of our ancestors where meat, fruits, and vegetables are the main dietary foods.

Obesity is one of the major risk factors for heart disease and cerebrovascular attacks. As more and more people suffer from this condition, scientists and medical specialists work side by side trying to find more effective methods to promote weight loss. They state categorically the importance of eating healthy and avoiding harmful food, adding physical exercise at the top of the list.

You’ll still eat plenty of lean protein, vegetables, eggs, cheeses, and nuts, but you also get to add in some of your favorite carbohydrates and sugars. You’ll learn the difference between good carbs and bad carbs and learn to balance foods so that you stay full and have plenty of energy! You stick to this phase of the diet until you reach your target weight.

Hydrox-Slim’s special blend of natural elements causes a natural physiological response of the body called thermogenesis. Thermogenesis is the process by which the human body creates heat. Substances that cause this effect are called thermogenics and are commonly used in products for losing weight.

Which program or diet product is right for you? That’s a personal decision, and one you should likely discuss with your doctor. It needs to fit your health, goals and lifestyle. Not all products are created the same.

It is also important to drink enough fluids on a cleanse. You should try to include at least 8 glasses of water daily to ensure that you are allowing toxins to be flushed out.

It is also said that vitamin D benefits the immune system since the T-cells or immune cells have receptors for vitamin D. It acts by boosting phagocytosis, the bodily functions to combat tumours, modulate neuromuscular and immune functions and reduce inflammation.

At the maintenance stage of the soft diet you would be met with getting over 400% of the regularly values for vitamin C, but during the induction duration only 33%. What kind of sense does this make? As a matter of fact, many people are ignoring this fact and continue to consume such nutritionals.

High in vitamins are fruits and vegetables. Many of these are good antioxidants sources as well. High-color food choices mean high vitamin content thus high energy storage. Look for yellow-orange, red, deep green, and blue in your food. For athletes, five to nine fruit and vegetable servings are recommended each day. Grains also contain both vitamins and minerals.

Nails care Tips for better nails

December 31st, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

There’s no doubt about the fact that getting your nails done professionally by a is worth the money if only because of the pampering that comes with it.  But did you know that nails are one of the last parts of our body to receive blood and nutrients during times of illness. Therefore, nail appearance is a signal of vitamin or mineral deficiency or body changes. But that is not the whole story, and is also very important.

Our nails are colorless and transparent. Healthy nails would usually appear pink because of the abundance of blood vessels under the skin. The nail’s tissue is called the matrix and the white moon-like lunula is at the top of the matrix. Below that is the nail bed, where the nail attaches to the body. The cuticle grows down over the nail bed and forms a watertight seal that protects the matrix against infection or foreign objects. Watch out for manicures or pedicures that cut away the cuticle because by doing so they increase the chance of getting a nail infection.

Natural estheticians do not use chemical nail hardeners or conditioners as part of their repertoire. These products do not stimulate growth or strength. They contain clear nail polish, which must be removed with damaging solvents. The solvents strip away the nail’s natural moisture. Before you know it, the nail’s keratin, or protein, is damaged and your nails peel and chip. Natural treatments include using aloe vera for its healing properties, in combination with oils such as primrose, camellia or almond as emollients. Fruit acids are added to soften the cuticles, allowing them to be pushed back.

A diet made up of fruits and vegetables to ensure vitamin and mineral absorption is beneficial for you and your nails. It should also incorporate whole grains, nuts and foods that are high in iron and protein. Drinking fresh-squeezed carrot juice daily will provide a first-rate source of calcium and phosphorus needed to strengthen your nails. Silica is necessary for the formation of strong healthy nails. It can be obtained by brewing up a cup of herbal horsetail and oat straw tea, or from a colloidal silicea supplement. Horsetail also is high in the amino acid L-cysteine. This amino acid is additionally found in the herb coltsfoot and contains sulfur, which is required in skin and nail growth

A Do-It-Yourself Guide for Beginners

December 31st, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

UV gives you a sexy tan but also causes photo ageing. No need to stay under the sun for hours anymore. Getting a Fake Tan is just as good. In fact, it’s in! You don’t even need to spend hundreds of dollars at saloons to get yourself a glowing skin and a radiant complexion. Yet another advantage is that the new formulae of the artificial tanning products give even better, not to mention faster, results. Indeed, when applied to the skin, these products result in more natural and uniform tones than the effects of natural tans.
Yes, you can now get a perfect suntan all year round, and without even getting out of your home. Sometimes I wonder why we call it Fake Tan. I mean, a tan is a tan, no matter how you obtain it. And here the results are even more stunning. Composed of an active principle called Di Hydroxyl Acetone (DHA), tanning products provoke the oxidization of the superficial cells of the epidermis, thus creating a coloration of skin that stays on average between 4 and 6 days, and then gradually fades away as the skin peels off. These products are available on the market in different forms: cream, milk, serum, fluid, spray, and so on. But personally I prefer creams with moisturizing properties to avoid dehydration of the epidermis, especially for the face. The advantage of sprays, on the other hand, is that – thanks to their ultra-light texture – they adjust
Getting a Fake Tan nowadays not only easy and safe but also almost instant perfectly to the fatty skin around humps and curves in the body.. Trusted cosmetic companies are seeing to it that their tanning products are absolutely risk-free and give you a harmonious tan without the risks bound to tanning in the sun (sunburns, allergies, accelerated ageing or photo ageing, etc.). Because cut-throat competition exists between them, as we are all aware, popular brands of beauty products are all improving their tanning products day by day, allying comfort, lightness and hydration.
Still, a few simple steps and preparations could help you achieve an even better Fake Tan. It is always recommended that you apply a light scrub over your skin and wash it off before the tanning product itself is applied. This will refine your epidermis, especially in areas where the layers of skin are thicker (elbows, knees, etc.). Exfoliating the skin regularly after the tan will equally help eliminate dead cells and unify the complexion. This will also avoid the piling up of layers of dead cells over the skin, which will obviously make your complexion appear dry and dull. Regular exfoliation will ensure that your tan looks fresh and help maintain that glow you love so much.
Conclusively, we could say that having a Fake Tan is definitely better and safer than long hours of exposure in the sun, especially as UV rays get more aggressive day by day due to the depletion of the ozone layer. Anyway, in many parts of the world you don’t have the sun all year round, but you would still want to have a great tan!

Mother Nature has a remedy for psoriasis, eczema and rheumatism

December 30th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

If you suffer from psoriasis, eczema or rheumatism then you will know that despite the efforts of medical science to find a cure, none exist! There are many psoriasis, eczema and rheumatism “remedies” out there on the market but, at best, they bring limited and temporary relief and, at worse, can cause harm because of the chemicals used in their production.

In modern society, we are all too aware of the preference for natural solutions to medical problems. Such a solution exists for psoriasis, eczema and rheumatism and it’s called the Dead Sea.

OK – I can hear you now: “But that’s miles away”, “It’ll cost a fortune, and what happens after?” and “What about the family?” Read on – it’ll be worth your while!

The Dead Sea – truly excellent value for money

Scientific research has shown what people knew 5000 years ago, that the water and mud of the Dead Sea, combined with its dry air have a remarkable therapeutic effect, especially on sufferers from psoriasis, eczema or rheumatism.

Mineral rich water and mud that clean and revitalize the skin, clean dry air that lets your skin breath and recuperate, sunlight with very low levels of UV radiation that also replenish your skins growth and health. All in all, a perfect package for patients with psoriasis, eczema and rheumatism.

I know what you’re saying “Get to the point!” OK, here it is

A course of treatment at the Dead Sea will clear up all the damage caused to your skin by psoriasis or eczema and bring relief from rheumatoid pain for up to one year with no need for booster treatments. What’s more, when signs of the complaint begin to reappear, its development is slower and less aggressive.

And there is one more benefit – taking a vacation with the entire family in one of the most amazing spots on earth.

So, what do you say now?

Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong

December 27th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong by definition refers to Tai Chi energy work. In this post I will try to shed some light on what is meant by the Chi Kung / Qi Gong energy work aspect of the practice?

Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong is often taught as a set of moves separate from the Tai Chi sets. I have found that the vast majority of the time these other moves do not come with much of an explanation of why and how they are any different from the Tai Chi in the Tai Chi sets and that the moves by themselves do not impart any kind of ability different than what is already available in the Tai Chi sets.

So, what is Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong? First of all the Tai Chi moves are just Tai Chi choreography or moves until you begin to actually to practice the energetic aspects of the art. The real practice of Tai Chi is Chi Kung / Qi Gong. As soon as you start practicing the energetic aspects the Tai Chi so to speak then you are really practicing Tai Chi (probably with the moves) and not just the moves. At that same moment you are now practicing and or applying the Chi Kung / Qi Gong.

An obvious question at this point might be so what makes Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong? That is a very big question because the answer could and does fill books. I will try to shed some light on it here.

First of all in Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong are the physical structural alignments which are a necessity for the proper flow of energy through and around the body including through the acupuncture meridians of the body. This is part of the reason that so much emphasis gets put on the moves at the beginning of a students training and why it stays an important issue in training as one progresses. Incorrect and bad posture impedes and blocks energy flow so it is important to get it right. While you are learning and working on this you are not really performing Tai Chi yet but are simply learning something you need to understand to perform real Tai Chi.

One of the first things you learn in Tai Chi and that is a necessity in Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong is known as Sung which translates as relaxation both inside and out. Any tension in the body will impede or stop the flow of energy through the body. This can be structural tension (bad or improper positioning), physical tension (like holding tension in your shoulders or neck simply because you do not allow them to relax) or mental or emotional tension that is manifested in the body such as jaws clenched and a tight face when someone is having a bad day.

So, for proper Tai Chi and Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong you first need Sung relaxation and proper posture. Once you have these you can really perform Tai Chi and Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong.

The next step in solo Tai Chi practice is all Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong. You begin to work different aspects of energy within your Tai Chi both for fighting and for self defense purposes. There are approximately 36 different primary expressions of energy in Tai Chi. You use your mind to direct the internal movement and chi into an expression. That expression is known as Jing. Jing is an expression of Chi or energy hence it is energy work. A few jing expressions are well known and some are quite obscure.

to be continued…

How To Avoid Weight Gain During The Holiday Season

December 26th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

It is so hard to maintain your weight when it comes to the holidays. The holidays makes it difficult to keep it under control, being surrounded by a table full of good smelling and delicious home cooked meals just makes you gain weight by looking at it. Mouth watering turkey, sweet potato pie, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, etc it is no wonder we tend to gain weight! It is somewhat hard to turn down.

A good meal is good for the soul but can be bad for your health. When surrounded by all that good food, you really don’t think about weight gain or weight loss. You are too busy stuffing your mouth with all of that deliciousness.

It is really quite simple when it comes to weight management during the holiday season. Portion control is the important step when trying to keep up with your weight. Losing weight is hard enough, so why not save yourself the time and frustration and remember the quantity when it comes to your diet.

When eating holiday food add veggies to the plate first, make sure you have more of that than the fattening foods. Eat a good breakfast! It is the most important meal of the day and it gives your metabolism a great start.

Sign up for a weight loss program, they are experts at keeping you motivated and they teach you and show you how to watch your weight gain. A Fitter U is an excellent new program that sends you workouts and tips through your mp3 player, Iphone, etc.

If you do overeat start up a workout routine. Create a fun and effective way to exercise if weight loss plans are too expensive for you. If you are cooking, try substituting your ingredients for healthier ones. Eat a salad before a meal or drink a cup of water. Make sure to eat fiber rich foods that make you feel fuller longer.

Most can control what they eat at the table, but what about the leftovers. Well turkey is good for you and its lean meat. However, what about the pies, cornbread dressing and other tempting foods. Sharing warms, the heart donate to people in need. Of course, the kids will have a different perspective than you with the food. They can eat it, but you have to watch your pounds. Make sure they eat in moderation too!

It can be quite hard not to gain weight during Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love those Christmas cookies they are my favorite. I watch how much I eat and if I do not I just workout a little more. You cannot starve yourself and you deserve a good holiday meal. Enjoy the holidays and don’t worry about your weight, if you do don’t deprive yourself of enjoying the most celebrated days of the year.

If interested come check out my same article on right here for info on the Fitter U program.

Lower Abdominal Exercises versus Upper Abdominal Exercises

December 26th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

In fitness, some people are confused about the topic of upper abs exercises and lower abs exercises, so here is some information to set the record straight.  The main muscle, that people talk about when they discuss the upper abs and lower abs, is the rectus abdominus.  Rectus means straight, and abdominus refers to the abdomen.  So simply put, the rectus abdominus runs straight down the abdomen.  The rectus abdominus is also the muscle that gives a lean person that six pack look.

The rectus abdominus is 1 muscle, but it has tendinous intersections that separate muscle fibers forming distinct sections.  Many people argue that because the rectus abdominus is one muscle you cannot isolate certain parts of the muscle, but I think the conversations around this topic get confusing because of semantics.  You cannot isolate only one section of the rectus abdominus while the other sections are not working, but you can emphasize one area over another.  So the problem comes with people using the terms isolate and emphasize interchangeably.

Our nervous system is so intricate.  Each nerve has thousands of nerve cells and each muscle has thousands of muscle fibers.  This allows us to move with accuracy, precision, agility, and grace.  The rectus abdominus is supplied by multiple nerves that work in a coordinated fashion to create a variety of movements.  The multiple nerve supply helps us move in different ways, and the upper abs and lower abs are emphasized when we do different movement.

The upper abs (upper part of the rectus abdominus) are emphasized when the trunk moves forward like in a crunch or sit up.  Ball crunches are also a good upper abdominal exercise, and crunch machines and ab machines will also emphasize the upper abs.  Even though the upper abs are emphasized during crunches, crunches also work the lower abs.  The entire rectus abdominus will work during any abs exercise when your trunk bends forwards or flexes.

  1. There is just more emphasis on the lower abs when the legs are moving.

Now, one thing that I must mention is that abs exercises do not magically melt away stomach fat.  Doing upper abs exercises will not magically get rid of the fat on the upper part of your stomach, and doing lower abs exercises will not magically get rid of the fat on the lower part of your stomach.  This is known as the spot reduction myth.  If you want to lose stomach fat, you should use a comprehensive approach to fitness and healthy eating.

In regards to your ab workout, try to exercise your abdominal muscles 2-3 times a week, and include both upper ab and lower abs exercises to work your body from a variety of directions.  By using different forms of exercises, you will have a more balanced body.
