<p>The core is more than just your abdominals. You have to come to grips with this before you can develop an effective core strength training program. Many define the core as all muscle groups from your groin to your shoulders, including your chest.</p>
<p>Another alternative to exercise the body core is by using the exercise ball. The simplest way to do it is by sitting on the exercise ball which will engage the core muscles. A more extreme exercise is by kneeling beside the ball while the hands on the ball and then rolling forward.</p>

They serve to protect our vital organs and allow us to move through unpredictable patterns. In short, the more core strength you have, the more movement, stability, and mobility you will have.</p>
<p>Okay, now let’s talk about working the lower back muscles on the ball. The same issues hold true when comparing back extensions on the floor and back extensions on the ball. You have less range of motion on the floor, so you may not achieve the same improvement in strength. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<!-- google_ad_section_start --><p>Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong by definition refers to Tai Chi energy work. In this post I will try to shed some light on what is meant by the Chi Kung / Qi Gong energy work aspect of the practice?</p>
<p>Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong is often taught as a set of moves separate from the Tai Chi sets. I have found that the vast majority of the time these other moves do not come with much of an explanation of why and how they are any different from the Tai Chi in the Tai Chi sets and that the moves by themselves do not impart any kind of ability different than what is already available in the Tai Chi sets.</p>
<p>So, what is Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong? First of all the Tai Chi moves are just Tai Chi choreography or moves until you begin to actually to practice the energetic aspects of the art. The real practice of Tai Chi is Chi Kung / Qi Gong. As soon as you start practicing the energetic aspects the Tai Chi so to speak then you are really practicing Tai Chi (probably with the moves) and not <b>just</b> the moves. At that same moment you are now practicing and or applying the Chi Kung / Qi Gong.</p>
<p>An obvious question at this point might be so what makes Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong? That is a very big question because the answer could and does fill books. I will try to shed some light on it here.</p>
<p>First of all in Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong are the physical structural alignments which are a necessity for the proper flow of energy through and around the body including through the acupuncture meridians of the body.  This is part of the reason that so much emphasis gets put on the moves at the beginning of a students training and why it stays an important issue in training as one progresses.  Incorrect and bad posture impedes and blocks energy flow so it is important to get it right. While you are learning and working on this you are not really performing Tai Chi yet but are simply learning something you need to understand to perform real Tai Chi.</p>
<p>One of the first things you learn in Tai Chi and that is a necessity in Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong is known as Sung which translates as relaxation both inside and out. Any tension in the body will impede or stop the flow of energy through the body. This can be structural tension (bad or improper positioning), physical tension (like holding tension in your shoulders or neck simply because you do not allow them to relax) or mental or emotional tension that is manifested in the body such as jaws clenched and a tight face when someone is having a bad day.</p>
<p>So, for proper Tai Chi and Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong you first need Sung relaxation and proper posture. Once you have these you can really perform Tai Chi and Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong.</p>
<p>The next step in solo Tai Chi practice is all Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong. You begin to work different aspects of energy within your Tai Chi both for fighting and for self defense purposes. There are approximately 36 different primary expressions of energy in Tai Chi. You use your mind to direct the internal movement and chi into an expression. That expression is known as Jing. Jing is an expression of Chi or energy hence it is energy work. A few jing expressions are well known and some are quite obscure.</p>

Most of us have minor aches every now and again and most of us just carry on with life regardless. If we stopped work each time we had a pain the world would soon grind to a stop.
</p>
<p>But don&#8217;t ignore a painful shoulder, especially if it is consistent. A Rotator Cuff Problem will|Rotator Cuff problems} often give us plenty of warning before they get bad and stop us in our tracks. If you notice weakness,stiffness, pain or swelling in your shoulder it may be time to take it easy and start the healing process.
</p>
<p>There are someshoulder problems that begin as the result of a knock or fall, most begin because of simple |wear and tear on the joint, either as we age or caused by a repetitive stressful movement. Okay, You can&#8217;t always do anything to stop the accidental injury but we can take early measures to cut down the damage from wear and tear. As we age our rotator cuff gets weaker through lack of use. We hold ourselves differently to how we did as youngsters, our {posture|shape gradually changes over the years. I only need to look at my waist to confirm that.
</p>
<p>As the rotator cuff gradually gets weaker we become more prone to shoulder injuries. The right sort of physical therapy done early on to strengthen the rotator cuff can go a long way towards stopping shoulder injuries. Although these are a small group of muscles {they are key to having strong shoulders and once we get past fifty we ignore them at our peril.
</p>
<p>So prevention is definitely better than cure, but just in case you&#8217;ve left it too late, what are the rotator cuff symptoms? Firstly, weakness and pain in the damaged shoulder. This might only occur when you use your shoulder joint. The commonest causes of discomfort are reaching up, or reaching for an object. Whenever you reach up or out the rotator cuff starts to work at its hardest. If you are having problems getting to sleep because of a painful shoulder, this is yet another classic sign. Lying on your bad shoulder can be painful, but lying on the other side so that your painful arm drops in front of you can be equally uncomfortable.
</p>
<p>If the pain is continuous, it might well be telling you that you have a badly torn rotator cuff.
</p>
<p>Most rotator cuff problems can be treated with rest followed by physical therapy but don&#8217;t rush out and sign up for a gym. These are a small group of muscles that need very specific exercise to build them up using either no weights or very small weights and physical therapy that are designed specifically for group of muscles.
</p>
<p>So whether it&#8217;s simply shoulder pain or a full blown rotator cuff injury, you will almost definitely end up exercising the rotator cuff as part of your therapy. Whether that is before or after surgery really depends on whether or not you listen to your body and heed the warning signs.  </p>

<p>Pack ankle and wrist weights.  These work for any exercise you normally use a free weight or dumbbell form, but have the added benefit of packing quickly and easily.  I recommend wearing your weights when running around airports to double up your travel time making connections or waiting for boarding.  Put them on when doing squats, sit-ups and push-ups for added weight and resistance.  They can also help turn a morning jog from a cardio calorie-burn into a lean muscle building activity.   </p>
<p>Speaking of morning jogs; the biggest mistake most people make when traveling is not bringing along athletic shoes or sneakers.  Even if you aren’t a runner, pack a pair of tennis shoes and spend some time wearing them.  Walk the hotel corridors or go up and down the stairs, enjoy a morning stroll along Main Street or in a nearby park.  Having good athletic shoes will allow you to take these walks with less chance of injury and stress on your feet, making the exercise more enjoyable and less painful.  </p>
<p>Another great tool to bring with you is a tennis ball or racquet ball.  No, the point isn’t to play tennis or racquetball: although, if the hotel has courts those CAN be great ways to get a workout in.  Instead, grip the ball in one hand and squeeze as hard as you can to provide your forearms and hands with a good strength building exercise.  A racquet ball packs light and takes up little space, making it an ideal choice for an exercise like this.</p>
<p>Resistance bands also pack light and are helpful when doing a variety of exercises.  A resistance band and related exercises provide basic arm and strength training.  There are many exercises available with resistance bands, but one great exercise is to use resistance bands while performing squats.  Squats alone are great lower body strength, but by stepping on the resistance band shoulder length apart and holding them at chest level, you will expand the benefits of the squat to your upper body as well.  Another great resistance band exercise is to ones are using resistance bands during squats and </p>
<p>Finally, one tool that almost everyone forgets is the proper nutrition your body needs to sustain exercise and strength training.  A lightweight choice is to bring whey protein supplements.  Most whey protein comes in a powdered form which you add to water to make a tasty and nutritious whey protein shake.  Since your hotel or motel will provide the water, all you are packing is the lightweight powder.  Whey protein provides your muscles with the right sort of building blocks to both develop and maintain lean muscle.</p>

<p>A shoulder impingement is a debilitating condition. I know because I tore my rotator cuff towards the end of last year and ended up with an impinged shoulder as a result of it. My supraspinatus tendon had become swollen and was getting impinged or pinched each time that I tried lifting my left arm.
</p>
<p>The pain was unbearable. At one point I was maxed out on pain killers and carrying a TENS machine around wired up to my shoulder to reduce the pain.
</p>
<p>Just in case you do not know what a shoulder impingement is. The supraspinatus is one of the rotator cuff muscles. The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that surround the shoulder helping to move and stabilise it. together they hold the head of the humerus in place in the socket of the shoulder joint.They all attach to the shoulder blade at one end and the humerus at the other.
</p>
<p>They are comparatively small muscles but very important to a healthy shoulder joint. Unfortunately they are also easily injured especially for anyone who uses their shoulders a lot at work or in a sport. Painters who are working above head height are prone to rotator cuff problems as is anyone who throws a ball in sport.
</p>
<p>The last group that are vulnerable are the over forties. That is where I fit in!
</p>
<p>A rotator cuff injury is a vicious circle. Once the tendon gets inflamed it can get pinched within a channel of bone that it runs through. Because it gets pinched it gets more inflamed, gets pinched more, gets more inflamed&#8230;.see where I am going?
</p>
<p>Untreated the end result is that you could end up snapping the tendon altogether leaving you with a very bad shoulder injury.
</p>
<p>Anyway, after several months of pain, I was on a short list for surgery, but having already suffered several months of discomfort, I was reluctant to wait any longer so started researching shoulder impingement treatment on the internet.
</p>
<p>I discovered that exercise is the secret to recovery. Not lifting weights but simple exercises aimed at rehabilitating the rotator cuff.
</p>
<p>It is important to start off with proper rest. That meant completely avoiding any type ofmovement that causes you pain. The pain tells you that you are damaging the muscle more. This meant some fairly radical changes to my daily routine including giving up driving for a few weeks.
</p>
<p>At the same time treat the inflammation. I maxed out on anti inflammatory drugs and used ice packs to bring down the inflammation in the tendon.
</p>
<p>As things started to ease up I started some Pilates based exercises to gently stretch the muscles and stabilise the joint, gradually moving on to strengthening exercises. By starting slowly and building up gradually over a few weeks I was able to avoid any pain or further damage to my rotator cuff.
</p>
<p>My shoulder got back to normal, pain free and fully mobile without resorting to the surgery!
</p>
<p>What do I put this down to?
</p>
<p>I believe that the over forties are susceptible to this injury because we change shape as we age. Our posture changes, we carry ourselves differently, sit badly and change the way in which we use some of our joints. We can get a bit lazy even. Our movements are not as fluid as when we were in our twenties and thirties. All this has an impact on the body and leads to problems.
</p>
<p>Doing the right sort of exercise gets things working again, sorts out our posture and gets rid of some of the problems that have crept in over time.
</p>
<p>This is no revelation. All of us know that we need to exercise to stay young. Sometimes it takes something like a shoulder injury to remind us how important it is.  </p>

<p>Towards the end of last year I managed to tear my left rotator cuff. It is easily done, I am surprised that I have not done it before. Around a third of us of us will manage to injure the rotator cuff at some time in their lives. It is one of the commonest injuries. Eight million Americans will acquire a damaged shoulder this year alone.
</p>
<p>What I did was to lift something awkwardly. It was flat packed furniture for my home office and I tried lifting the desk taking all the weight on my left hand and steadying with my right. Because of the weight and shape my left arm was completely straight so all the weight was on my shoulder. I felt a sharp pain in my shoulder, put the furniture down, gave my shoulder a rub where it hurt and didn&#8217;t think about it again until the next day.

<p>I had managed to tear, which is one of the rotator cuff muscles. This had resulted in a shoulder impingement that was causing pain each time that I tried lifting my arm above shoulder height, or reaching for anything, or reaching behind me, or lying on it, or&#8230;Get the picture?
</p>
<p>The pain got worse over the next couple of weeks as I tried to carry on. I now know that this was not the right thing to do. Trying to carry on with a rotator cuff problem will simply lead to a worse injury which is exactly what happened in my case.
</p>
<p>By the time that I went to the doctor after two weeks, I had damaged my rotator cuff badly enough to need surgery. To cut a long story short, the doctor tried anti-inflammatory drugs, steroid injections and a few other things to try to bring down the swelling and free up the impinged tendon, all without success. It was after that he decided that surgery would be best.
</p>
<p>By now, three months had gone by and I was getting quite bored with being in pain whenever I tried moving my arm, so rather than wait another three months for surgery (UK waiting time on the NHS) I began to look into rotator cuff injuries on line and found out that the majority rotator cuff problems are sorted out without resorting to surgery.
</p>
<p>The key is to rest the shoulder properly, which ,if I am honest, I probably hadn&#8217;t done. It is hard to completely rest a shoulder because you use them without thinking. What you do need to do is avoid any movement that causes pain as this is an indication that you are doing more damage.
</p>
<p>Deal with the swelling at the same time and hopefully the shoulder will start to free up and become less painful.
</p>
<p>Once it has you can start exercising the shoulder to strengthen the rotator cuff. These will not be weight bearing exercises but tend to be more Pilates style exercises working on flexibility and control. As the muscle gets stronger you can then start more resistance based exercises, but even then they will not use any great weights because the rotator cuff muscles are small and not load bearing muscles.
</p>
<p>If only I had known then what I know now I could have saved myself a lot of time and trouble, not to mention pain.
</p>
<p>As it is, my surgery date has come and gone. I cancelled because my shoulder was back to full pain free movement without going under the knife, and I now do about ten minutes of exercises for rotator cuff injuries every day.  </p>
