Alternative Medicine Health – A Valuable Tool In Achieving Better Overall Health

January 23rd, 2010  |  Published in Women's Health

Alternative medicine health can be a valuable tool for achieving better overall health through both conventional and non conventional means. Many would argue that we are asking too much of conventional prescription medications. Some people tend to think of them as standalone treatments for common conditions such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes, when perhaps a combination of conventional medicines combined with lifestyle modification, exercise, or dietary changes would produce more predictable and longer lasting results.

If you are thinking about implementing alternative medicine health you are not alone. By the latest estimates slightly over half of all Americans use some form of natural alternative therapy or supplementation whether it be acupuncture for pain relief, meditation to help with the anxiety of everyday life, or over the counter natural health remedies or supplements such as fish oil to stay well.

Most methods of alternative health rely on changes in lifestyle along with supplementation to achieve the desired results. This is known as a broad spectrum approach, or whole person plan. While there are many different approaches to alternative medicine health (natural healing, complementary medicine, lifestyle modification) at the end of the day they all subscribe to the importance of restoring inner balance and harmony to the whole person as an essential part of any successful therapy. Examples of alternative medicine health therapies include yoga, chiropractic care, massage,  meditation, herbal remedies, and homeopathic medicines.

One primary goal of alternative medicine health is for people to take personal responsibility for their own balance and wellbeing, rather than using prescription drugs as crutch for unhealthy habits. Sometimes this is an unpopular idea, believing that it is simply too much trouble, or they can’t find the time. To drive home this point let’s use cholesterol lowering drugs as an example. We all have friends that eat high saturated fat foods, are likely overweight, don’t exercise, and despite not doing anything to help themselves are on cholesterol lowering medications. There overall health is likely not so great, and they wonder why their doctor can’t do more to help them. Honestly, it is not the doctors fault! While we think of doctors as miracle workers, and often times this reputation is deserved, they likely can’t provide their patients with good health through drug therapy alone.

In the end, alternative medicine health can be a powerful tool in improving a person’s chances of leading a healthful, disease free life and should be taken seriously. By working with your doctor to implement a more natural approach you will be taking a giant step in preventing future illnesses and avoiding many of the side effects than come with a treatment plan that includes a long list of prescription drugs.

Are You Looking After Your Most Important Anti Aging Tool?

January 3rd, 2010  |  Published in Sexual Health

Until recently, there was an accepted outlook about getting older that was shared by experts. They believed that there was little that could be done to prevent the ravages of aging. Today we know better as there is strong evidence that the downward spiral is not inevitable and there is much we can do to slow the aging process.

There is a growing population of older people who have stayed active and healthy. We see them in the gym, on the tennis courts, on the slopes skiing and many are still working and are productive vibrant members of society. Getting older for them is not about ‘taking it easy’ or ‘growing old gracefully’.

It is not the accumulation of the years that is the problem it is the belief that health is just a question of luck and that there is little that can be done to prevent ill health. That is backed up by the fact that only six out of ten adults have a proper muscle building and maintaining exercise in place.

Although our life span has been extended thanks to medicine, science and technology during the past century our health span has not been extended and we are often left with the last third of our life filled with pain, suffering and disability. Any wonder many people do not want to live to an old age.

The idea that growing old is all about wrinkles, senility and ill health persists. Indeed, for many of today’s older people, growing older is linked to illness. Statistics tell us that fifty percent of all adults have at least one chronic disease and many have multiple conditions. Three quarters of people over 65 years are taking multiple (average 12 daily) medications for a wide variety of ailments.

For many older people, life revolves around visits to the doctor, hospital and tests. Yet this does not have to be the case. It is sad and ironic that many people suffer from ailments that are easily prevented or controlled through proper exercise and proper nutrition. It has predicted that eighty percent of all disease can be prevented with health building lifestyle choices like proper exercises.

Generally, the older we get, the frailer we become from loss of muscle tissue from not doing enough muscle building and maintaining activity. The end result is the inability to perform the physical tasks and activities of daily living. This only gets worse till eventually we are unable to take care of ourselves and someone has to.

While most of us accept this loss of function as the norm, it does not have to be this way and we each need step up and take responsibility for our own health and wellbeing. The days of doing nothing to help ourselves and keep our strength are numbered. There simply isn’t enough money to have round the clock nursing for people that have neglected to practice self care and maintenance on their bodies throughout their adult life.

The number one most important anti aging goal for every adult should be to prevent the loss of muscle tissue. This is the prime substance for maintaining many body functions, from blood sugar regulation to mood control, for protection from disease and controlling body weight as well as mental health and emotional stability.

A proper strength training program set up and monitored by a fitness professional is at the top of the list so you can have a health span that matches your life span. If we can remain active and functional there is nothing to fear about getting older. And who knows we may be able to do things in the last third of our life that we never achieved in the first or second third. Isn’t that something to look forward too?

Meridian Energy and Eft Tapping – An Energy Tool to Obtain Emotional Freedom and Healing

December 31st, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

Working with energy? How does one go about doing that? To start off, you approach working with energy as if you were a child, playing. You leave your opinions at the door, and allow yourself to be open to all possibilities. When you’re in an open state, like a child, anything is possible. Our minds have long told us what is real and what is not, but where the mind cannot go, the imagination can — and that’s exactly how to work with meridian energy in the body and use energy tools like EFT tapping to obtain emotional freedom and healing.

It is Not Poppycock!
The problem that most of us face is that we’re so filled up with beliefs about this and that and ideas of how things are supposed to work. We’ve entered the quantum age and most people aren’t even aware of it. I am old enough to remember watching Star Trek when it first came out on TV. It was so cool, Captain Kirk, Spock and the crew, talking with their little communication devices, flipping them open and just speaking!

And now just a mere 30 some years later we are living with things that were once science fiction, only now they call them cell phones. Are you aware that the cell phone is actually DESIGNED from the Star Trek Communicators? In fact — many things that were once a part of science fiction (starting in the 40′s with Robert Heinlein and crew) are very much a part of science fact.

This applies to everything. Absolutely everything

Energy Permeates All Things
It is all things — and it is neither good or bad, it just is. So as we mature in life, as we age, we have long forgotten the dreams of childhood and took on the beliefs of our caretakers, those we trusted and loved, and implanted those beliefs in our “Meridian Energy Systems” — our bodies. To get that programming out of there, at least the stuff that no longer serves us, requires different thinking than what put it there in the first place.

Emotional Freedom Technique
EFT tapping involves tapping on key meridian lines within the body, along the same principles as acupuncture works (which is also an energy releasing system) as you say key emotional phrases, first a round of negative phrases and emotions about the topic and then a round of positive emotions and words about the topic.

There are reported cases of folks receiving healing from incredible physical and emotional problems from this simple thing involving tapping on key points in the body.

And if issues come up again, tapping them away works. Many might think that working with these kinds of energy tools is some kind of new age woo hoo stuff, but if you think about it — the Chinese have been using many of these “energy” techniques for well over 6,000 years. In China you pay the doctor to keep you well, and that involves acupuncture, feng shui, the eating of weird stuff that is all natural, QiGong, martial arts training and a whole host of things that are slowly making their way into western traditions.

You may laugh if you want, but any martial artist knows that “energy flows where attention goes,” and if tapping on my body while saying phrases can save me a costly medical bill or heal a broken heart, well then, I’m in.

Let’s Face It
There’s still so much that we don’t know about our Universe and an honest medical doctor will tell you that he had nothing whatsoever to do with healing his patient. The patient heals himself — always. Sure a doctor is great to have around in any kind of emergency and for those dis-eases we are incapable of dealing with. But energy tools go to the root cause of the problem, they don’t treat the symptoms like so much of our western medicine does.

My mother, god love her, at 82 is on so many medications its unbelievable — and now she has to take them. Some of them are so bad that the contradictions they cause in her are amazing. She takes 11 prescriptions, some of which are to offset the negative effects of the others! How crazy is that?

You’ve seen the commercials, oftentimes the cure is worse than the illness. It takes almost another whole 15 seconds with the voice-over speaking at lightning speed to let you know all the things that can go wrong if you take such and such medication.

For now, I’ll stick with EFT and my other energy tools.

These energy systems work for me and I say why work with stuff that doesn’t?

I’ve been using the Emotional Freedom Techniques EFT now for three years and I have really experienced great results with these EFT tappings. EFT tapping can heal issues from your past, remove emotional blockages that impinge upon your ability to bring more money into your life, help heal your body, improve your relationships and work just about on anything that involves YOU.

Using Music as a Tool to Extend the Benefits of Massage and Energy Work

December 8th, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

Using music as a tool to extend the benefits of massage and energy work is something that is often underutilized by massage therapists and energy workers but can be a key component to a prolonged healing experience.  The use of sound as a healing force dates back thousands of years. Research has shown the profound effect of music on reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, creating deep relaxation and inducing peaceful sleep.  In other words, when music speaks to us, the body listens.  Don Campbell’s’ book, The Mozart Effect, Tapping the Power of Music to Heal the Body, Strengthen the Mind, and Unlock the Creative Spirit, shows how modern science has begun to confirm this ancient wisdom, finding evidence that listening to certain types of music can improve the quality of life in almost every aspect.

When using music as a tool to extend the benefits of massage and energy work, be sure to choose long, slow, melodic pieces without words. Music that invites your client to float away will help create a more relaxed body so the massage or session can go deeper with less effort.

This same music can be used in between sessions, acting as a stimulus to help the body remember the healing experienced during the previous massages and energy sessions. According to Ted Andrews in his book, Sacred Sounds, Magic & Healing Through Words & Music, “The more we are exposed to beneficial sounds, the greater and more permanent the effect they have upon our own individual energies.”

Hearing the same music can re-create the essence of the massage or energy session; the mood, the feeling and the reflective place within.

By offering your clients a tool that is inexpensive, portable, and an effective way to prolong the effects of the massage or energy session, you have empowered them to take an active role in their own care.

As you integrate this tool into your work, you will have happier, healthier clients and you will also create a new income stream for your business by having the music for sale in your office.

I have been using music as a tool to extend the benefits of Healing Touch in my practice for years. I am now co-owner of Twin Flames Production, an internet based business selling original relaxation music created by a massage therapist especially for massage and energy work. You may listen to samples and place orders at www.twinflamesproduction.com. I am certified as a Healing Touch practitioner and instructor, and am on the faculty at Front Range Community College as a part-time instructor in the Holistic Health Practitioner Certificate Program. I also have a private Healing Touch practice in Fort Collins, CO.
