How to Avoid Muscle Soreness

December 12th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

The day or two after a workout, you will almost certainly feel some muscle soreness.  This dull ache and pain is natural, and isn’t something you should be worried about.  However, just because you shouldn’t worry about it, doesn’t mean you ought to just put up with it.  Nobody needs to feel uncomfortable after a workout.  There are two surefire ways to avoid muscle soreness: stretching and providing your body with protein.  Best of all, both of these are natural, not chemical.

In order to understand how to avoid the aches and pains of muscle soreness, it’s important to understand where it comes from.  Many people think that muscle soreness is the result of lactic acid buildup around the muscles.  However, recent research has shown that this isn’t actually true.  Your muscles do produce lactic acid during strenuous activity; but that lactic acid typically drains and dissolves within thirty minutes to one hour after ceasing the workout and activity.  So what causes the soreness if it isn’t lactic acid?  Most experts agree that during strenuous activity your muscles become damaged.  One way is that your muscles can get inflamed and swollen because of the increased blood flow during strenuous activity, thereby exciting the pain receptors nearby.  Another way is that muscle fibers are torn and damaged when the muscle is doing the work.  This tear and inflammation is what causes most of the muscle ache that people feel after their workouts.  And it is something that you can prevent.

While many people deal with the ache and pain of muscle soreness using chemical anti-inflammatory drugs like acetaminophen, aspirin or ibuprofen.  These drugs can help reduce pain caused by inflammation and swelling, but they don’t do anything to strengthen muscles or repair the damage muscle tissue.  Instead of resorting to a chemical “band-aid” fix; stretching and proper nutrition can deal with the problem head on.

The importance of stretching to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is immense.  Most importantly, stretching does three things that help deal with muscle ache.  First, stretching increases joint flexibility and range of motion; this helps avoid wear and tear on ligaments and tendons in joints.  Second, stretching is a great way to reduce muscle tension.  Flexible and elastic muscles aren’t as easily torn or damaged as stiff and static muscle.  The most important benefit of stretching is that it increases circulation (blood flow) which helps increase energy output on the muscles.  Stretching before exercising will help maximize the exercise by warming up muscle groups and moving the blood to make sure muscles are well oxygenated.  Post-exercise stretching helps to remove the lactic acid buildup, and also to maintain healthy blood flow to the muscle groups.  This blood flow is how the body delivers amino acids to the damaged muscle tissue; amino acids are what repair the damage.

The best way to get amino acids into the body is through protein in your diet and the easiest way to get protein after a workout is through a whey protein shake.  Whey protein shakes have two benefits: they are whey-based, and they are shakes.  Whey protein is easily digestible and soft on the body compared to other supplemental protein sources.  And getting protein in the form of a shake provides the added benefit of hydrating a sore body, which helps flush out impurities and promotes healing.  Good stretching and whey protein can make muscle ache disappear: reducing the need for chemical pain relievers and helping you get back in the gym.

Wii Fit Plus Review: A Great, Fun Way to Stay in Shape

December 9th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

Two of the greatest challenges many people have when they try to get in shape is monotony and boredom.  The Wii Fit changes all that.  Wii Fit is getting people in great shape because the exercises are fun, diverse, and entertaining.

I recently saw my friend Larry who I had not seen in over a year.  The last time that I saw Larry he was looking in great shape and well below his 43 years.  In fact, he looked so good I inquired about what he was doing.

“Well,” he exclaimed, “I’ve enrolled in this new exercise class at the gym and it gets me in great shape.”  I like to get my workouts at the workout room in my house or outside in the sun so I do not belong to a gym.  But, after I last saw Larry, he almost had me convinced.  Whatever program he was on was certainly working.

That was then.

When I saw Larry last week, he was back to his former self if not a little heavier.  He lamented about his physique which had been so great the previous year.

“What happened with the program?” I asked him.

He replied, “It just got too routine and boring.  Plus, driving to the gym was taking too much time.”

Larry is proof that getting in shape sometimes is much easier than staying in shape.  Workouts become tedious, routine, boring, expensive, and take up a whole lot of time.  However, staying in shape is so important for vitality and longevity in your life.

This is where Wii Fit Plus comes in.

Wii Fit Plus adds variety to your routine.  There are several forms of exercises from which to choose:  warm ups, cardio, strength, yoga, and more.  One day you can work your respiratory system with a great cardio workout and the next you can build up your muscles with strength training.  Following that, you may wish to choose yoga or a variety of mini routines that you can setup to focus on certain areas.

I love the pre-set routines offered by Wii.  You can choose workout durations of 20, 30, or 40 minutes that are different everyday.  This is about the amount of time that it would take to get to the gym and back.  With the Wii Fit Plus, you are already done with your workout in that amount of time.

But probably the best feature is the automatic goal setting and progress tracking.  At the gym, you work with your trainer to create a plan.  Then, you often carry that piece of paper around with you and have to manually track your progress.  Not with this game though.  The Wii Fit Plus tracks your progress so that you can see where you have been and, most importantly, where you are going.

It is no small wonder that the Wii Fit Plus (make sure you get the Balance Board option as it adds many new balancing workout) is a regularly one of the top rated Wii games. It provides you an opportunity not only to get in great shape, but to stay in great shape.

Wii Fit Plus has been selected as one of the Best Christmas Gifts for 2009. It makes a great Christmas Gift for Her 2009 and for him as well. The author of this article, Richard Mas, is a retail specialist and senior editor at The Christmas Store Online.

Combine Diet With Exercise To Lose Weight Fast

December 5th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

So you want to know how to lose weight faster with exercise and diet. I am sure that you have heard it time and again that in order to lose weight effectively, you need to exercise and go on a good weight loss diet, so that your calories burnt can exceed the calories you consumed to lose weight naturally.

So why must we combine exercise with diet in our weight loss plan? This article will discuss which is a better way to lose weight. Exercise or diet or both.

You see, exercise plays only one part of a successful weight loss story. Professor Robert Kushner of Northwestern University and clinical director of the Northwestern Comprehensive Center on Obesity said that his overweight patients often tell him they are not getting the results they want from exercise. These patients will typically say that they have been working out three days a week for 30 to 45 minutes for several months and I have lost 1 or 2 pounds.

Dr Kushner said that he advise his overweight patients that exercise is very good for them, but for successful weight loss, he emphasizes a healthy diet in the beginning. “Firstly, we’ve got to get a hold on your diet,” Dr Kushner said. “Then, as you are losing weight, feeling better and you are getting lighter, you can then shift more and more toward being more physically active and then living a physically active lifestyle for the rest of your life which is critical to keeping your weight off permanently.

James O. Hill, PhD, professor of pediatrics medicine and the director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado at Denver said that Prof Kushner’s weight loss strategy is a reasonable approach to losing weight effectively but others have had success including physical activity early on. It is easier to cut 1,000 calories from a bloated diet than to burn off 1,000 calories through exercise.

Prof Hill went on to emphasize that there are numerous studies that show that exercise is associated with weight loss when done in enough volume and consistently. It all depends how much exercise you do.

Another medical doctor, Pamela Peeke, MD, MPH, FACP, said that she emphasizes getting exercise immediately with obese patients, partly for its mind body benefits.

Dr Peeke said that she asks her patients to start walking as a way to “celebrate” their body with activities. “For years, they have blown off their body, so by having them actually using their body, they can begin to integrate their body back into their life and not use it as a source of torture or torment or shame.”

All the weight loss experts metioned above agreed that no matter how you lose the extra pounds, you need to be active to keep them off. “You can’t find very many people maintaining a healthy weight who are not exercsing regularly,” Prof Hill said. “What we find is that people who focus on diets alone are not very successful in the long run without also focusing on regular exercise”.

He further warned that people can be wildly successful temporarily at losing weight through diet alone, but there are plenty of data to show that those people regain the weight if they are not physically active or exercising regularly. “When it comes to weight loss, you can’t talk about diet alone and you can’t talk about exercise alone because you absolutely have to address both issues at the same time,” declared Dr Timothy Church, MD, MPH, PhD, director of preventive medicine research at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La.

“The average person overestimates the amount of activity they are doing by about 30% and underestimates their food intake by about 30%,” said Kathianne Sellers Williams, MEd, RD, LD, a registered dietitian, personal trainer, and wellness coach in Atlanta. She said, “When I am looking at people’s food consumption and activities, sometimes things just don’t add up,” she said. “I do think that people think, oh, I just did 60 minutes at the gym or I just did 30 minutes at the gym and think that counteracts a lot of what they are eating. But the reality is, our food portions are huge.” Plus, you have to look at all the other calories you ate or drank that day and how sedentary you were apart from your workout. The rest of the day, you are sitting down and you are also eating other things,” Dr Peeke said. “How are you going to burn of those stuff, let alone this extra little treat that you just thought you wanted?”

It is hard to accurately estimate how many calories you burn working out. Dr Timothy Church said, “If it is an intensive workout, you will kind of instinctively think, wow! That’s cool! I just put enough in the bank for two days. But and you really have not!”

For example, it is estimated that a 150 pound person who bikes furiously for 30 minutes burn about 340 calories. Let’s just say that this person would have burnt 70 calories sitting on the couch watching TV, the extra calories they burned by biking drops down to 270 calories. That’s less than the 300 calories in just one cup of cappuccino.

Treadmills and other exercise machines often have monitors that estimate how many calories you are burning. Those displays are “close, but for each individual as they can vary quite a bit,” said Prof Kong Chen, PhD, director of the metabolic research core at the National Institutes of Health. Prof Chen suggests using calorie displays on exercise equipment for motivation, but not to offset your eating. “For example, it doesn’t matter if the monitor says, 300 or 400 calories. If you do that every day or increase on that level, then you have achieved your purpose. But if you’re feeding yourself against that, then no, I wouldn’t recommend that”.

Those machines may not subtract the calories you would burn without exercising. “It isn’t 220 calories for those 40 minutes of exercise versus zero. If they were sitting at work or playing with their kids, they are probably burning 60 to 70 calories during that period of time,” Prof Kushner said. “You have to minus out what you would burn if you didn’t exercise. So it really becomes much less.”

Therefore your best bet for effective weight loss is to lead a physically active lifestyle that goes above and beyond a brief bout of exercise. “It is not just about 30 minutes of exercise a day, it is about avoding being sedentary.” Dr Chen said.

So the message isn’t that the half hour on the treadmill isn’t any good, it is just that the 30 minutes on the treadmill is not going to make up sedentary hours. So you should weave in physical activities throughout the entire day.

So which is the best method for losing weight effectively and to keep the pounds off permanently? Diet or exercise? The answer is both together.

5 Exercise Tools to bring when Traveling

November 9th, 2011  |  Published in Sexual Health

Anyone serious about fitness must dread traveling for business or pleasure.  While many hotels have gyms; you never know if their gym hours will match your availability or if the equipment is what you want.  While you always need to travel light, there are five tools that everyone can fit into their luggage that can help you get all the exercise needed to stay fit while on the go.

Pack ankle and wrist weights.  These work for any exercise you normally use a free weight or dumbbell form, but have the added benefit of packing quickly and easily.  I recommend wearing your weights when running around airports to double up your travel time making connections or waiting for boarding.  Put them on when doing squats, sit-ups and push-ups for added weight and resistance.  They can also help turn a morning jog from a cardio calorie-burn into a lean muscle building activity.

Speaking of morning jogs; the biggest mistake most people make when traveling is not bringing along athletic shoes or sneakers.  Even if you aren’t a runner, pack a pair of tennis shoes and spend some time wearing them.  Walk the hotel corridors or go up and down the stairs, enjoy a morning stroll along Main Street or in a nearby park.  Having good athletic shoes will allow you to take these walks with less chance of injury and stress on your feet, making the exercise more enjoyable and less painful.

Another great tool to bring with you is a tennis ball or racquet ball.  No, the point isn’t to play tennis or racquetball: although, if the hotel has courts those CAN be great ways to get a workout in.  Instead, grip the ball in one hand and squeeze as hard as you can to provide your forearms and hands with a good strength building exercise.  A racquet ball packs light and takes up little space, making it an ideal choice for an exercise like this.

Resistance bands also pack light and are helpful when doing a variety of exercises.  A resistance band and related exercises provide basic arm and strength training.  There are many exercises available with resistance bands, but one great exercise is to use resistance bands while performing squats.  Squats alone are great lower body strength, but by stepping on the resistance band shoulder length apart and holding them at chest level, you will expand the benefits of the squat to your upper body as well.  Another great resistance band exercise is to ones are using resistance bands during squats and

Finally, one tool that almost everyone forgets is the proper nutrition your body needs to sustain exercise and strength training.  A lightweight choice is to bring whey protein supplements.  Most whey protein comes in a powdered form which you add to water to make a tasty and nutritious whey protein shake.  Since your hotel or motel will provide the water, all you are packing is the lightweight powder.  Whey protein provides your muscles with the right sort of building blocks to both develop and maintain lean muscle.

Weight Loss and its Relation to Sexual Health

July 1st, 2010  |  Published in Men's Health

Everyone’s going gaga over the latest diet craze being hyped by the media or the newest workout program to hit the fitness scene. New weight loss pills are being introduced one after another and have flooded the market competing for sales. People everywhere seem to be in that “lose the excess pounds” psyche:  “Thin is sexy!”. “Lean is hot!”.  “Rip those biceps.” “Flaunt your abs.”

Back in the 80′s, Olivia Newton-John popularized the song “Let’s Get Physical” which promoted fitness and about the same time, physical fitness videos by celebrities flooded the market such as the legendary Jane Fonda Aerobics Videos.  Even John Travolta’s dance movie, “Staying Alive” capitalized on the fact that the then-emerging star was being mentored by no less than Sylvester Stallone for his physical fitness program to fit the role to a “T”.

In today’s world where survival of the fittest becomes the name of the game, being overweight is considered absolutely unsexy.  The message is clear as you see it on tv, billboards, and magazines. Has everyone gone self-conscious?  Let’s face it.  It’s not just about vanity or feeling good about yourself.  It’s about living a healthy lifestyle.  The universal need to look and feel sexually desirable just comes secondary.  Whether you like it or not, being overweight is unattractive and can pose serious consequences in one’s health condition.

How true is it that for every pound you lose, the more sexually desirable you become?  Though there are people who prefer sexual partners who are on the voluptous side, a great number still prefer having the right curves and bulges at the right places.   However, being sexually attractive is not the only goal we need to consider. Whether you are a man or a woman, you are responsible to always keep your body in good condition, if not in perfect shape. Losing weight can improve the sexual health of both men and women.  The couple becomes more aware of each others new size.  Their sexual senses have become more attuned to the sexual stimuli which they receive and therefore increases their sexual pleasure.  By having slimmer bodies, both the man and the woman becomes comfortable with their bodies and they tend to enjoy each other better when it comes to their sexual activities, as compared to overweight couples. It is no longer just a physical thing, it becomes an emotional factor.

Obesity and Infertility

It is believed that obesity could greatly affect male sexual health concerning infertility.  According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS),”overweight men are significantly more likely to be infertile than normal-weight men, and that for every 20-pound body weight gain in men there is a ten per cent increase in infertility.”  Though statistics show that women are more prone to obesity that men, still, this clearly shows that men should also take care of their weight for their health’s sake.

On the other hand, obese women are particularly susceptible to increase in blood pressure than their male counterparts.  There is also higher risk of cancers such as postmenopausal breast cancer and endometrial cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Body Image and Healthy Weight

For all its worth, men and women alike should maintain an ideal body weight and image.  Body image is the way we project ourselves and how we perceive and imagine the response of others.  It is not inborn, therefore, we can do something about it.  Healthy weight is the size which a person achieves based on the goal initially set in accordance with the person’s physical condition as determined by a medical professional.
People try to find sensible and sustainable ways to achieve and maintain a healthy weight on a long term basis.   Maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, lead a vice-free lifestyle, and all the good things in life will be added unto you as well.

Better Sex: Body And Mind Tips

June 19th, 2010  |  Published in Sexual Health

The benefits of better physical conditioning are presented daily in the media. The social norms for body image are influenced everyday by what we read and view, either on T.V. or the internet. Yes, primary motivators to better conditioning are improved health, decreased healthcare costs, increased energy, and heightened self image. Perhaps the number one reason to get in better shape is found in the bedroom.

Here then are mind and body tips that can lead to better sex:

Eat Differently

Notice this does not say “loose weight” or “go on a low carb diet”. It says Eat Differently. This means two things. One is portion control and two is meal frequency.

Portion Control

Simply put most of us eat too much. That, in part, is a function of how much we are served either at home or while eating out. Many of us grew up with parental instructions to be members of the “clean plate club”. What we did not know was that eating everything on our plates, given the portions that we are served, is making us fat! Eating to a holiday meal coma state (think Thanksgiving) is not healthy and will put on weight. Conversely eating until you are satisfied and then putting the fork down will yield dramatically different results. It’s not about banishing all the food you enjoy from your diet. It is about learning to moderate the amount of food you eat. This leads to the next point.

Meal Frequency

So if you are eating less at these meals won’t you get hungry? Yes you will. This means you will need to eat. Experts in diet and nutrition suggest eating 5-6 times per day. The pattern would be:

Breakfast

Mid-morning snack

Lunch

Mid-afternoon snack

Dinner

Post dinner snack/dessert

When combined with the Portion Control rule you will train your body to eat less at one sitting, your body will expect smaller increments of food more frequently, and the end result will be weight loss. This statement assumes that your 5-6 meals are not comprised of cheeseburgers, french fries, and chocolate shakes! Eating more fruits and vegetables and following a low-fat diet is a great start. The Eat Differently suggestion still incorporates sound dietary principles such as limiting the amount of fat, carbs, sugar, salt, etc.

What is the net effect on sex? Simple really. Eat better, loose weight. Less weight stimulates the sex hormones.

Workout For The Pelvic Region

Activity that sends increased flow blood to the large muscle groups gives the genitals better circulation. This means working the thighs, buttocks, and pelvis. The exercises that can accomplish this are as simple as a brisk walk (20 minutes per week), yoga, cycling, Pilates, and jogging. The result of this increased circulation is better arousal, and better orgasmic function. As always you should consult you doctor before engaging in any exercise regimen. The primary byproduct of this exercise will be a return of sexual desire.

Reduce Stress

One of the best ways to kill sex is being over stressed. How can you perform when the demands of the job and family are creating havoc on the brain? Three great stress reducers:

Breathing: yes breathing. Deep, relaxing, purposeful breathing. It oxygenates the blood and wakes up the brain.

Exercise: there’s that word again. Singularly one of the best stress reducers there is.

Music: when dealing with stress, the right music can actually lower your blood pressure, relax your body and calm your mind.

Stop Buying What The Media Is Selling

Paris, Angelina, Nichole. What do they weigh? How much should they weigh? What do they eat? These are the headlines of the mass media everyday. They have the potential to pollute the mind into believing that the body image of the “stars” should be our body image. True sexuality is found when you and your partner allow yourselves to abandon the stereotypes. If either partner is worrying about a bulging this or a sagging that how can sexual intensity be realized? Condition your mind to accept your body as it is. Body image can be more destructive to sex than many other factors.

Ways To Use Bodyweight Calisthenics To Burn More Fat Than Your Regular Workout

November 3rd, 2009  |  Published in Sexual Health

There is some debate among fitness professionals about the best way to burn fat.  Some say long, slow, aerobic exercise is best.  Some say high intensity interval training is the way to go.  But bodyweight calisthenics?  Until now, nobody considers the fat burning power of high intensity bodyweight workouts.

Let’s look a three ways you can use bodyweight routines to burn more fat than your regular workout.  If you have tried long, slow cardio you probably didn’t get the results you wanted.  And for some, the more effective interval training is too intense for their fitness level.  But bodyweight calisthenics are a great choice for the beginner and advanced exerciser.

Do Morning Calisthenics To Boost Metabolism

First of all, metabolism refers to the chemical reactions of breaking down food into energy.  And when you are sleeping your metabolism slows down.  After all, you are not eating anything or exercising during your sleep (or at least you shouldn’t be).

So to kickstart your metabolism you should exercise.  And the most accessible and useful forms of exercise in the morning is bodyweight calisthenics.  So, when you wake up, a couple of quick circuits of bodyweight exercises and calisthenics gets your metabolism rolling and sets the pace for the rest of the day.

Important: the other thing you want to do to get your metabolism rolling is to eat breakfast.

Use Bodyweight Interval Training Instead Of Boring Cardio

Traditionally, many people turn to boring aerobic exercise to burn fat.  If you’ve ever jogged on a treadmill or use an exercise bike for 20-30 minutes you know what I mean.  Even though interval training is commonly held to be better at burning fat, many people still think aerobic cardio best.

But what if you combined your boring cardio with bodyweight intervals?  Not only would your break up the monotony of the cardio workout, but you would burn more fat as well!

Here is what I mean.  Suppose you are going to ride the exercise bike for 20 minutes.  Every 5 minutes jump off the bike and do a quick circuit without rest of a lower body, upper body and core bodyweight exercise.  Then get back on the bike and repeat for the full 20 minutes.

What this does is break up the breathing patterns and effort levels of your workout, making it harder.  Harder work means more calories burned.

I would also contend that using your full body for your cardio actually builds a better, more muscular body.  Plus, it is just more fun!

Juggernaut Training

First of all, Juggernaut?  Yea, a Juggernaut refers to an unstoppable crushing force.  And that is what you will become when you do these type of workouts.  Plus, you’ll burn a ton of fat.

Much like the Bodyweight Interval described above, you are going to COMBINE resistance training with cardio training.  But instead of just doing this for the “cardio” portion of the workout, you are going to do this for the ENTIRE workout.

Think of doing circuits of different bodyweight exercises alternated with traditional cardio.  You end up doing strength exercises when under cardiorespiratory stress, and cardio exercises when under muscular stress.  This make one tough workout.  And also, the tougher the workout the more fat is burned.

If burning fat is a concern of yours, I think you can see bodyweight calisthenics are a great tool.  Unfortunately, most people overlook bodyweight exercises as a fat burning tool, and end up never reaching their goals.  I hope this article has shown you some quick ways to incorporate bodyweight calisthenics into your workout and reach your fat loss goals.
